VINTAGE FISH PORN
« on: June 16, 2016, 02:06:32 PM »

I actually started thinking about this post last night, and went through my old photo albums, and Rod's Facebook post today pushed me to do it.  Please share your own pics and stories, I have no salmon fishing to do right now so I am getting restless. With the exception of the Polaroid, the rest of these pics were taken on disposable cameras - remember those?  I think they're pretty good pics considering you couldn't see the results until after development.

This is a bass I caught at Boundary Lake on March 5, 1992.  I had arranged for a fishing party with some friends at the lake and we all got our parents to drop us off, where we fished from shore.  I was 13 at the time.  After almost everyone else had given up and been picked up by their parents, I hooked something while casting a black grub on a black jighead.  It got caught on some reeds, so my friend Andy had to wade out (in his shoes) to retrieve the fish.  My mom said it tasted like mud, but it tasted like victory to me!  I don't know how the fishing is in that lake these days, or if there is even any more public access since the border security tightened-up post September 11.  Anyone ever fish it from the BC side?  Google maps has it labeled as Judson Lake.  https://www.google.com/maps/@49.0009913,-122.4133012,12z  I see there is also a small lake on the north side of the border right next to it.

Skipping ahead to 1993, my dad decided we would take up river fishing since the boat was nothing but a money pit and not worth all the maintenance for as little as we were using it.  We bought 10& 1/2 foot shimano mooching rods at a sportsman's show in Seattle, and ambassadeur reels to pair them with.  That first year, my dad booked us a guided trip to Gold River.  Well, we saw lots of fish on that trip, but that was the problem - the river was waaay too low and clear.  Anyway, we went back with a friend about a month later, and that is when I caught my first 2 steelhead.  That's our friend Dave with us in the second pic.  I guess I was 14 at the time.  I've been back 1 other time, I think around 2000, and I caught 1, but I don't think I have a pic.

Next we have 2 coho and a spring jack from one of my best days ever on the Vedder (to that point).  This was back when you could keep wild coho, but it looks like these were clipped.  I released a big buck coho because it had a slight pink hue, but knowing what I know now that would probably have been the best tasting fish of the lot.  I took my dad back to that spot a couple days later, but all we found were springs.  These were caught in a nice pool that doesn't exist anymore, downstream from Allison Pool.  Man, I miss that spot. Oh, how rivers change.
