Title: Flytying Night -- Coquitlam Monday Night 6:30-9:30
Post by: skunkaroo on October 07, 2006, 11:05:11 AM
We've been running a flytying night in Coquitlam for the past few years and I thought it would be nice to get the word out a little further afield.

The Coquitlam Tying Night is set for this coming Monday from 6:30-9:30pm. Unfortunately it's also Thanksgiving Monday, but I figure that after a weekend with the relatives, you'll probably want the break ;D

Details:

The Coquitlam Tying Nights are open to everyone from newbie to expert. If you're just getting started or interested in learning, we always have a few spare vises, tools, materials and a little free instruction to get you going.

The evening takes place on the second and forth Monday of each month (with a break around Christmas). There is a $5 cover to pay for the room, with anything left over going towards door prizes. The wings are cheap on Monday's and there is a great selection of beers on tap. The tying takes place in one of the meeting rooms and not in the bar. From time to time we will set up a fly swap--put in three flies plus a toonie, get three flies back with any money collected going back into the kitty--although for this coming Monday we won't be doing a swap.

Location:

    6:30-9:30 pm
    Ridgeway Legion
    1025 Ridgeway Ave.
    Coquitlam
    Here's a map link: Map Link (http://business.superpages.ca/supermaps/mapinit.jsp?CB=&SRC=mytelus&N=legion&T=COquitlam&S=BC&R=N&STYPE=S&LID=0001135313&map.x=212&map.y=125&level=8&lat=0492496&lng=-1228655&POI1lat=0492496&POI1lng=-1228655&POI1name=Royal+Canadian+Legion&streetaddress=1025+Ridgeway+Avenue&city=Coquitlam&state=BC&zip=V3J1S4)

Door Prize:

On offer for the evening's door prize: a do it yourself flytying material organizer, and if we get an 9 or 10  bodies out there will also be a new pair of super sharp fine-tip tying scissors.

Theme:

This tying night's theme is "Boatmen" (you don't have to follow the theme, but that's what I'll be working on).

Hope to see you there,

Aaron (aka skunkaroo)

Fall calendar available next month.

Everyone is always welcome. We generally meet the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month in the off season (Oct-May) and occasionally outside of that. I'll post here prior to each get together.

Had a great time with the boatman patterns, ended up tying about seven different patterns between us.

Tight Wraps,

Aaron

There is no off season in this region. If you put in the time and actually do your homework on all waters (lake, stream, beach, & estuary) there is always water to work and a speicies to target.

Great to get the word out to any fly guys and tyers.

These tying nights at Coquitlam are the best way to get into tying flies and learning how to use them, get out to Coquitlan and get involved, you can't go wrong.

Were from all stages of tying flies, Peter came from Kit's and had a blast, he brought nothing except his interest in getting started, Aaron is just one of some that help interested new tyers, anyone is welcome to come down and just look and listen, it's were we all started!!

COQUITLAM TYING NIGHTS...

It's Contest night!

We're on again this coming Monday the 27th from 6:30-9:30pm and this time, courtesy of the good folks at Mustad and pro-staffer Jack Simpson, we will be having a little contest--a very little contest. We will be tying itty-bitty flies on sizes from 22 down two 28 . All hooks will be supplied, and I'll even bring down a selection of micro threads to try (for those with serious prescription glasses there will be slightly larger contest hooks available).

At the conclusion of the contest there will be a draw among the participants or a lovely selection of Mustad Signature Fly Hooks.

Is there some sort of material list for each nights theme ? I don't know what I would need to bring , or do I just bring a box full of my material/gear and start tying ?

I am very new to tying , but I have completed 10-20 of my own creation flys , mostly dry's and leeches .

I guess I will have to stop by next session and see what it's all about .

Add me to the email list if you can .
Thanks.

We're on again this coming Monday the 28th from 6:30-9:30pm. Only two to go before the summer break.

Details:
The Coquitlam Tying Nights are open to everyone from newbie to expert. If  you're just getting started or interested in learning, we always have  spare vises, tools, materials and a little free instruction to get you  going.

The evening takes place on the second and forth Monday of  each month (with a break around Christmas). There is a $5 cover to pay  for the room, with anything left over going towards door prizes. The  wings are cheap on Monday's and there is a great selection of beers on  tap. The tying takes place in one of the meeting rooms, and not in the  bar. From time to time we will set up a fly swap--put in three flies  plus a toonie, get three flies back with any money collected going back  into the kitty.

Theme:
No theme as such for this evening, but I'll try and do some kind of mini-demo and answer any questions.

Fly Swap:
We will be hosting a fly swap this week. As always, participation is voluntary.

Location:
6:30-9:30 pm
Ridgeway Legion
1025 Ridgeway Ave.

Hi all,

Instead of having our last tying session at the Legion, the "executive" has decided on having a wind up BBQ/Casting Session  down at Lower Hume park on Monday the 11th of June from 6:00-9:00 pm.  I'll be bringing a small BBQ, some smokies, buns, hot dog fixings, and  a 10x10 canopy in case the weather doesn't co-operate. I haven't  officially booked the facility as the price ($94) was too  prohibitive--but I confirmed that it hasn't been booked (and it's 99%  likely that it won't be). If a crowd of people RSVP then I'll look into  booking it officially.

I'm also bringing down three of my light  weight rods (1, 3 and 3wt) so that people can try lawn casting a few  light rods and lines. I would encourage anyone with rods in the 0-4wt  range to do likewise. If the conditions are right, we might even be  able to fish for the mighty Brunette Pike Minnow (1 or 2 at a time) so  bring your boots or wading sandles.

It's  open to everyone as usual, but I'm still going to be asking for a $5  donation so that there's enough in the kitty to cover the first night  or two of the fall session rentals at the Legion. We will be having a  draw for a "Door Prize" as well.

Here's a link to the site information: Hume Park (http://www.nwpr.bc.ca/parks%20web%20page/hume%20shelter.html) and a link to the PDF of the Park Map (http://www.nwpr.bc.ca/parks%20web%20page/pdf%20programs/park%20maps/hume%20park.pdf). We will be meeting at the lower park by the picnic shelter, with the entrance off Columbia/North Road. This is the closest "Mapquest" reference I could get Hume Park (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&country=CA&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&addtohistory=&cat=&address=Nootka+Street&city=New+Westminster&state=BC&zipcode=V3L).

Aside  from hotdogs, if someone wants to bring something to share just let me  know. We could probably use a couple of folding chairs and a few  lanterns as well. There's a sink there which may of my not work, but  you can't drink from it--so if you want anything to drink you'll have  to bring it on your own.

If you're thinking about coming out or bringing something then let me know before Saturday so I can get organised.

Spread the word to any tyers that want to come down, and  feel free to bring the family (there's a swing set for the kids and a  honking big field).

Aaron

P.S. I'll probably bring a portable tying kit, just in case ;)
