i checked out the steveston wharf today and noticed a few boats selling fresh (chrome) chum. i also noticed that they all had an abundance of beautiful roe for sale. $7 lb for anyone interested. high quality and rich colour, in tight skeins.

Wow Iv seen sockeye sell for less then chum roe.... :o

funny thing is, there was a time when the commercial fishermen use to throw them over board. now people line up to buy them. especially alot of eastern europeans.

Bruce's market used to sell Chum roe for $12+ bucks a pound,a few years back . Like oil stocks this was based on Japenese people eating chum roe by the buckett at a premium price. They say that now that the younger generation of Japenese don't prefer the taste of Chum roe it's starting to drop. When I first bought Chum it was $2.50 a pound at Bruce's. you do the math.

I used to work in the fish cannery during the summer. I had roe coming out of my ying yang.
-
This morning I went there, chum roe was $6/lb, and chum salmon was $1/lb.
