slow cooker recipes?
« on: February 09, 2006, 09:14:24 PM »

Anyone have any good slow cooker recipes to share?  Fishy or not fishy.  I just got my crockpot a couple of weeks ago, but I think hubby is getting sick of my "experimenting" with recipes.  I would appreciate any tried and true ones.  I got Chili, no problem.  am interested in good chicken and beef dishes that aren't soggy and covered in tomatoes.  Why are so many slowcooker recipes covered in tomatoes?  (not that I have anything against them but enough is enough) :)

Fishin, I do a whole ham in my pot frequently. Fill the pot with enough water to cover the ham, add pepper corns, 5 or 6 bay leaves, cut an onion into 4 parts, and add the leaves from 1 1/4 to the pot, and 6 garlic cloves cut in half. Set the crock pot on low for about 6 to 8 hrs.

When you take the ham out, the meat should be soft enough for it to fall off the bone. If you like the skin crispy, then remove it after it's been in the crockpot and bake it in the oven. Also the remaining water, garlic, onions, etc. etc. Will be you base for some very nice soup. Put the water into the fridge over night, let the fat harden, skim the fat off the water, and discard. Then use thw remainder to make soup. I prefer to make split pea soup or Vegetable Noodle.

I'll dig out other recipes at a later date for you. I use my pot, more than I use any other gadget.

Reservoir Dog is right.  Try using that ham stock for split pea soup.  Stews are fantastic in there too, but be sure to brown the meat in a pan, deglase the pan with a minimum of liquid and pour it in.  I used to have trouble adding too much liquid.  A lot of juice comes out of what ever you cook.  Any recipe for stove top rice pudding works great.  I also make a Chinese rice porridge called "Congee" in there.

I surf this site at times, very good:

Let me know how it goes!

I usually do it with my deer roast... but beef or lamb roast would be good too.

center cut roast 3-4lb or bone in roast 6-7lb ( tasted better)
1 head of garlic ( peeled)
2 bay leave
Rossmary
slat and papper

1/2 cup or red wine
1 cup of beef broth

1.preheat a frying pan, add little oil, place roast in pan and sear all side then place in pot
2. deglace pan with red wine, then add beef broth and bring it to boil
3. pour liquid in pot, add  garlic, bay leave, rosemary and seasoning
4. set slow cooker to 275*F
5. cover the pot with lid and it will be ready in about 6 hours.

when its ready, meat will be nice and juicy and should be tender enough that you can cut with fork.
serve it with mesh potato or i like it with toated Frech bread.

One of my favorites

Ham and Scalloped Potatoes

6 to 8 slices of ham
8 to 10 medium potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
2 onions, peeled and thinly sliced
1 cup grated Cheddar Cheese
1 10 ounce can cream of celery or mushroom soup
Paprika
Salt and Pepper to taste

Put half of ham, potatoes and onions in the crock pot.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper, then grated cheese.  Repeat with remaining half.  Spoon undiluted soup over top.  Sprinkle with paprika.  Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours (or on high for 4 hours)

I usually do this on coho
3tsp of white wine
2 cap fulls of lemon juice
1tablespoon of oyster sauce and put on very slow.
take it out about 3 mins before it would be ready or it will dry up eat and enjoy.

Place the cheapest cut of beef or pork roast, or chicken or pork chops or what-have you, in the cooker.
Pour in a cup of salsa (mild, medium or hot, depending on your preference). Even though slasa is tomato based, it will not taste tomatoish because of all the moisture that cooks out of the roast.
Set it on low. Cook all day while you are at work.
Serve with whatever: rice, poatatoes, noodles. Yum.
Delicious! The kids, friends, family, everyone will rave at your cooking abilities. :) :) :)

Hey FC, Costco is currently selling a slow cooker recipe book with 300 recipes, and its on $15. I bought it, and it rules. They recipes are really good, and not a tomato to be found!

Happy flying, happy fishing
