Anchor for Canoe lake fishing
« on: July 13, 2015, 01:08:50 PM »

My question is: "is a 3 lb grappling anchor the best type of anchor for this application?". I want to be able to spend a bit less time paddling against lake winds, and a bit more time fishin'.  Planned to use with 50' of anchor rope.

Canoe: Clipper Tripper 17.5' Ultralight
Mounting: Stern mounted Scotty Anchor pull
Lakes: Buntzen, Sasamat, Birkenhead, Cultus

TIA!

I recently built one using a retractable dog leash and 2ft of chain for my kayak and it works great.
Now granted the leash is only I think 16ft so only good for shallow water.
If you want a bit deeper, you could go with a retractable clothes line and chain.
The nice thing about this is that you don't have to worry about a whole bunch of rope in your boat.

Thanks Joe - so no anchor per se, just using chain links from Rona or the like?

Yup that's exactly it. It was actually from the instructional video for my Kayak. Nothing fancy...just a couple feet of chain from any hardware store.

Now I don't fish out of a kayak or canoe, but if using a Scotty mount, wouldn't the chain drag in the water when stowed creating excess drag when paddling? Just a thought.

My kayak has a slot in the back of the kayak designed for the chain. I did have to cut it down a couple links to keep it out of the water. In a canoe...you could just pull it out of the water and into the boat.
