1 July Vedder : Do you think Productive ????
« on: June 18, 2009, 11:43:17 AM »

Hi everyone,

Vedder opens 1st July. Last year I went there but no chinook until mid august, only some sockeye that I encountered with.

Do you think this year we can connect some nice reds on the first day???

Thanks.

You are right. Last year the lower part was high and dirty. Only upper part was clear and I have seen lot of people caught and release sockye. But no one got any chinook on that day as far I know.

In my opinion catching red springs is more difficult than catching steelhead. I don't know why but every single year I only catch one, maybe 2 red springs.  It's lots of fun walking the river on a nice hot summer day, but it would be nice to get more than one fish every 4 trips..
the daily black bear sightings in the upper river make it pretty exciting too....

problem with red springs is because the water is considerably higher so there is alot more water to search through for the few thousand fish that come back. also reds on average are alot smaller then whites which adds to the difficulty because they hang out in different types of water, Whites like big deep holes, i have caught most of my reds in pocket style water.

My opinion is the vedder river red spring summer run is just as fragile as the endangered sockey running at the same time personally I leave them alone and focus on the fraser during this time hopefully my kids will be able to enjoy this fishery in the future as I have in the past.

Fish being caught in the fraser are fish going to rivers with weak runs as well.

The chilliwack red springs do require some work but once found it comes easy after that.
