As I was checked on Grassy Bar today I asked the Fisheries Officer when he expected it to open. He replied by saying most likely in 2 weeks. He said roughly August 10th due to the numbers of sockeye already.

Any date that you've been given is simply a guess at this point.

Please follow the new releases by the Fraser River Panel (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=7112.0) of the Pacific Salmon Commission. The early Stuart sockeye return number has been much lower than originally predicted, they are also late. Test fisheries have indicated that summer runs may also possibly be smaller and late. Opening is undetermined at this point, anything you heard is not concrete unless you read it on fisheries notices (http://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/xnet/content/fns/index.cfm?pg=search_options&lang=en&id=recreational) of DFO Pacific. We'll also have the latest updates released by DFO and Fraser River Panel posted here and the fishy news (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishy_news) section of the website.

In the meantime, Fraser River conditions are excellent for barfishing right now for chinook salmon. Last week's test and recreational fisheries were very productive. Get out and enjoy the fishing while you can.

it would be great if it opened on the first so we can get some long weekend sockeye fishing in.

Mike, there were no commercial openings yesterday (July 24). The only net openings were communal and ceremonial openings in both freshwater and Tidal Fraser River and the target species is chinook salmon.

The early Stuart sockeye estimate has been raised to 130,000 fish but it is still only a small % of the original 258,000 estimate at 50% probability. The raise does not indicate that the fish are not in trouble but people should be cautiously optimistic.

The early Stuart run size has no relationship to the size of the summer runs so it does not indicate when an recreational sockeye opening would be issued.

..... and if the early stuarts keep tracking late, and do not meet the 50% forcast, look for NO openings until dfo is satisfied that all the early stuarts are through the mission and hope waters
