Purchase Dilemma
« on: December 22, 2005, 09:38:52 PM »

I am about to buy myself a nice Christmas present. ;D I want to start flyfishing. I want to get a set up that would serve me well as a beginner's combo but would also be reliable once I get the hang of the sport. Here are my questions. I aim to ultimately target salmon in rivers such as Veddar or Squamish.

1) What weight should I start with?
2) What type of line should I buy? (Multi-tip.....sinktip....floating.........)
3) What are some recommendations for rod and reel? Anyone have experience with temple fork outfitters rods and Orvis Battenkill reels?

Help please? ???

I have a TFO and used it on Chum and Coho this year. Its a good rod for the price thats for sure and would highly recommend it.

I would reccommend an 8 weight as it can handle big ugly chum and still get a fight from a coho. I would get a rio versatip for the line.

So far: TFO 8wt + RIO versatip

Any recommendation for reel?

I've been shopping around and I am going blind with all the choices. :-\

Okuma Integrity 7/8 would be good too. Clutch, disk drag, aluminum frame and spool... and an affordable price  ;) with an 8 weight rod I would choose a 7wt line.

What's the reason behind fitting an 8wt with 7wt line? ???

I second the Integrity as thats what I use on my TFO. Never had a problem with it and I really enjoy using it.

I got a Sage XP 8wt. When casting 8wt line I find it unloading kind of sluggish. But with 7wt line it's krisp.

What line you using for your XP.  I have casted many fast action rod such as yours, the one thing in common for all is not enough line.. most of them handle better with one line weight higher even two for some such as the TCR.
