Thanks, very informative for a newb, still a little confusing about retention, though. Seems like a surefire rule is only keep something that's missing an adipose? Also, how far downstream are you no longer considered to be downstream of somebody else?Hatchery Rainbows and Steelhead are Adipose clipped (no adipose) to indicate they are hatchery fish. You can retain those as they are laid out in the regulations for. If any trout/char (Bull trout) has an adipose, release it.

Should be no retention for Steelhead period anywhere.

Although I don't mind gear guys letting me know they are going to pass me when I swing flies I appreciate the common courtesy!also you don't need to wade out very far in table top runs.ive hooked a fish while dangling the fly 10 feet to the left of angler.
As per etiquette
One run is the general rule, Ie. If someone is working through one run jumping below them in that run is considered bad taste, but if there is a run below the one they are fishing it is fair game. That being said use your best judgement, if someone is at the tailout (end of the run/pool), it might be best to file in behind/ask if they are going to fish through it. It also gets a little messy when you have people camp in one spot and not moving through.
I will throw in a quick note. There might be some fly-fishers out who are trout fishing. Generally they work upstream, so just be aware if you meet someone going the other way. Most of us are usually pretty aware of the situation that we will leave before that might become an issue.
Should be no retention for Steelhead period anywhere.
Huh? Do you realize the implications if your suggestion were implemented?
Since you made such a bold statement, I would like to hear the rationale behind it.
Once I read your reasoning, I will tell you why I think that a blanket catch and release rule would represent the beginning of the end of our sport.

Perhaps have a poll then. I agree with milo, it'll be the beginning of the end.
There is no point in hurting fish (or even causing the stress) if you don't retain it. There is no justification to that.
Well, it would sure make the river less crowded ;D
On the other hand, there are many legally sanctioned, and popular among angler, fisheries that are strictly catch and release and draw thousands of anglers every year. How about the Fraser River sturgeon fishery, or many of the popular streams in the Kootenays that are C&R for trout/char? Very popular, world class, fisheries with huge economic impact.Fish don't care for your economic benefit.
There seems to be some justification...
Holy cow!!
We better get out there and kill some fish. It's our right!!!!!
Back to reality, it has already been proven both fisheries work.
Imo
Hatchery fish are for eating.
Wild fish are for c&r, if it's not going to harm the fish for future generations.
If we stopped doing c&r on wild fish. No one would stand up for the fish and everything would become pavement eventually.
How's the river condition?? ::)
for the most part everyone I encountered were very helpful and friendly. Met a few real dicks too....but yeah such is life ..
How's the river condition?? ::)X2
From lower all the way to upper the river was ( and prob still is ) very low vis. 8-10 inches tops on Monday. I'm sure the level has come up since then too..
Was there all day ...saw no one else ... caught nothing .... but was great just to be out there.
My 1st post btw... ( been a lurker for a while )
Many of you may not check the Fishing-related Issues & News section but if you check there you will see what the river looked like because of a clay slides in 1997. I have posted the video there that I produced nearly 19 years ago. Thanks for posting Chris. Very interesting. You are a great ambassador to our sport. So happy I've had the opportunity to speak with you on a couple of occasions.
PS. I understand members are passionate about steelhead issues but can we please keep this thread to just river conditions and related info. please start a different thread regarding other issues. ::)

Dryish winter? what are you talking about? There was more then enough water.Water was low in some of the spots I like to swing flies. Just my preference.if I remember correctly it didn't rain very much from December to march last year. Could be wrong
On a side note, are there wolves in the Chilliwack valley? As i was driving back down river, below the prison but before Allison Pool, I thought for sure I saw a wolf. It was too big to be a coyote, I would guess in the 70-80lb range and was predominantly black with some grey or beige. It was running down the road but as I got closer, it darted off into thick brush on the other side of the road.Wouldn't be surprised. Some of the wolves in Washington moved in through the cascades.
...decided to take advantage of the break in the weather and take the dog out and do some scouting.....checked behind "on the way" and saw the changes 2 (3m) high waters can make...found some water that might be ok when levels drop....water was really chalky....fair number of anglers around...checked higher and found snow on the ground and even some still on the road from thompson park up..went as far as allisons where the vis was better..most of the clay bleed coming from slesse park/tolmie slides...Was told today a slide came down at Slesse Clay Slides this AM, blocked the access to the resident who lives there.

They are in the Pitt watershed, probably the Skagit, why not the Chilliwack?
Ventured out today myself. Last minute I put the pin setup back in the house and decided to go with just the spinning setup. Wasnt the best choice. From about Tamahi down was pretty colored up. Went up to the prison area and did alot more hiking than fishing. Water is still a bit high but up top it was good visibility at about 2-3 feet. Tamahi down was about 12-18 inches.

Was told today a slide came down at Slesse Clay Slides this AM, blocked the access to the resident who lives there..........that log house sat empty for years..thought they wouldn't let old nick move in because of it ...then it gets sold and the new owners move in and build another house on the other side close to where the creek there blew out and flooded/scoured...not to mention the river is always looking to flood over/chew its way through there...very active/changing area from Allisons down to the trailer park...
Im glad I was in the car when I saw it cause I had just walked that stretch of road to get back to the car. Bears and cougars are usually a thought in the back of my head, particularly when I go to the upper. I had bear spray in my sling and I keep my knife easily accessible just in case but wolves hadnt crossed my mind till yesterday. I would hate to come across one in the woods let alone 5. I remember hearing of a cougar sighting last year in the mid river Wilson Rd area.
I saw a cougar lower river this year. Was literally just walking on the Rotary trail LMAO! Man do those cats ever move fast! They are also very big! Last summer i also saw a different cougar in the lower again but on the opposite side of the riveDid you report these sightings to the COS? They take cougar sightings very seriously as there are hundreds of people using the Rotary Trail daily, me included. Where exactly did you see these animals, and when?
I was about to post pictures but I see Sugartooth beat me to it. I walked past the fresh debris flow at the clay banks on Saturday morning. I'm a geoscientist so I find this stuff pretty neato. Excavating the material from the fresh debris flow and trucking it out would make space behind the dyke to impound future debris flows providing they are small. I'm very curious to see how this pans out. Here is a link I found detailing the works project: http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/library/282335.pdfI have this vid link on the Slesse Slide on Fishing Related Issues and News but thought I would take the liberty of posting it here as some of you may not go there. Thought the history of this slide is interesting, at least it held up for 19 years and made better water conditions for that time and kept some silt and clay out of the river bed.
too bad its not gravel or trucks would be lining up to take it out, but clay, no one cares.I think lots of people care Rod, but finding the political will and funding to solve these clay slide problems is the real problem. As you well know, this particular slide is but one of several in the area. I think all but the Ranger Run slide have been worked on in the past.
Chris I really enjoyed watching that video you posted!

+1 for good conditions in the upper above the slide. Beautiful green in the upper river on Saturday and less so on Sunday after the heavy rain.

You would never catch me doing this through a fresh slide. You have no idea where any crazy sink holes, deep spots or other types of hidden dangers there could be.
I remember Rod (bent rod) telling me about getting stuck in that same very slide years ago when it came down huge and said it was scary because he was alone and got lucky getting out as he was sinking slowly. I too have stepped into sink holes along the Chehalis and Norrish rivers due to their soft and unstable substrate, it's no fun going from solid ground to over your knees or more instantly. I even had it happen again on my last fishing excursion and thankfully a buddy was within reach as I went past my knees in about 2 seconds and was still sinking fast and I could not feel anything solid under my feet :o
Anyone hear of the guy on Norrish this year that got stuck up to his waist in the mud, while the river was on the rise and S&R had to come get him because his buddies couldn't pull him out !! scary stuff
Is the river still fishable below the slide? Any vis at all or straight chocolate milk.
Tons of guys in the upper today. Was an absolute gong show up there so went mid and lower. Water is cloudy but fishable.
I don't know what happened yesterday afternoon but when I crossed Tamihi bridge at around 2:45 the river had changed to chocolate brown with no visibility at all, it was a sudden change because I had been fishing in 12 to 18 inches of visibility since 9:00 in the morning, must of been something let loose upstream.
[/quote
There was an excavator clearing the slide off the road yesterday at about that time. All he could do to clear the road was to push the soupy mess over the bank and into the river.

in december on a weekday. wow.Keep in mind Christmas is on Friday.
those of you that hook 10+ steel a season on the vedder need to make a trip up north if you haven't already..... find the time, find the money. make it happen. if you have developed your skills enough to light up the vedder everywhere else will be soooooooooo easy for you, and so much fun.

A couple of guys I used to fish with in the late 60's, early 70's, Ron Tetreau and Keith Temple, were superb anglers (I still think Temple is the best steelhead angler I have seen and certainly the best I have fished with - he caught more behind me than me ahead of him) moved to the Skeena country and became local legends with their angling skill.
Crossed the Vedder Crossing and honestly the colour/clarity didnt look too bad. Forecast looks like snow starting tonight.Snowing in Langley north of HWY1 now...
how long do you guys think the water quality will be bad would love to go out tomorrow but this look ruffFrom my experience with these slides in the past, when you got rain falling on the slide material the conditions were bad below the active slides.

Unfortunately we are not going to have good water like we have had for the last few years partly due to the work done by the Chilliwack River Action Committee that did work on some of these slides. That certainly helped for a number of years. Some people think it was a waste of time and money but it did improve things for a number of years for anglers and the habitat for many species of fish.
With the CRAC now disbanded it will be nature left to do the work that will take time.
pressure is one river variable I never experienced until I moved to the lower mainland.
I fished the vedder exclusively when I first got here and I could never match my numbers from up north. not even close. It wasn't till I started thinking about how to avoid the actual pressure that these fish see that my numbers went up a bit.
so alot of walking, and over the last two years less and less time on the vedder and more on other flows. where the fish don't see 35 presentations every km.

Yeah I know whats it like. I still make my annual trip ( 1 week trip)once awhile up to Haida Gwaii to hunt deer and steelhead fishing. The numbers of steelhead, cutthroat and bulltrout/ Dolly Varden I catch is unbelievable compare to lowermainland rivers I fished in one season. Being going up there for 21 years.

So this happened today.
Quick question: What kind and size of float do you fish? I love these Freds Custom Tackle floats, but they sit so tall in the water that i'm wondering if sometimes i'm missing gentle takes? Maybe time to switch it up.Just add a little more weight.

The snow is coming down hard don't know if the conditions will hold upAnd roads getting covered now and slippery in places. A good time to stay in and watch football and hockey.
Snow continues to fall, may have a foot by tomorrow.Guess it depends where you are .. in Sardis there might be 1" of slush but when I was out by the canal earlier today there was a lot more and it was accumulating. Out of town anglers planning to fish the C-V tomorrow might want to check the latest conditions.
smaller hooks don't always mean better i have had fish swallow a hook hole and then there is no saving the fish.
and I use a 1/0 or size 2 depending on water clarity
No saving the fish??? It's quite simple if the hook is very deep and you aren't allowed to retain the fish simply cut your leader off. Tie a new hook on. Do not try and preform surgery.
Saw a jeep rolled off the road in the ditch today on Chilliwack lake Rd. Roads are very slick be careful out there people!!!
Had some luck today ::)
Was snowing all day! So beautiful out on the river !!!!!
Snow continues to fall, may have a foot by tomorrow. No where near, in the Valley floor maybe 2 inches but the melt is now on with the sun shinning. ;D
Nothing but a whitefish for me today.Well at least you saw one.
Had the biggest piss off... floated through a spot about 15 times or so. Buddy walks in, and so I move down to keep fishing the run. Levelwind Larry here throws on a prawn... first cast.... WAM! 8-10 lb hatch. He's doing the happy dance as i'm swearing under my breath...

Well, at least it wasn't a guy with a spinning rod. ::)
How dare him for using a level wind and showing you up. ;D
He was probably using an in superior rod as well. ;)
WTF is an in superior rod???I think he meant to say inferior.

Woah guys, "levelwind larry" came out of pure frustration... Sorry to anyone I offended. No harm done.Reminds me of Gumboot Garry and Tackle box Terry. Sure all the latest gear and tackle is nice, but doesn't mean others can't out fish you with what they have.
WTF = What The F... Use your imagination you'll figure it out.

I feel sorry for the one dimensional angler.
Totally agree with you....I love fishing with my centerpin, but there's been days when I wished I'd brought my level wind instead. Try fishing 6 hours straight without stopping...your arms and wrist feel like lead after casting and retrieving hundreds of times...worse when you don't get a sniff.Either your are a weakling ,no offence or ,or your setup is badly balanced. I have 11'3" rod with pin reel and fished well over 6 hours straight and never got tired.
River in great shape now. Lots of guys out there too. The cold and dry weather expected over the next few days will only improve things.Just came back and neither me , my friend or others that I saw caught one fish. Tried worms ,eggs and metal with no positive result.

Ive gotten the head shake and the "you know they wont hit that this time of year" when I come in with my spinning set up a couple times now. Im still honing the spinning setup but did get the satisfaction of plucking a dime bright 12+/-lb wild out from behind 3 headshakers last year.Too early. No fish in the river. They won't bite. Go home. ;D
Just came back and neither me , my friend or others that I saw caught one fish. Tried worms ,eggs and metal with no positive result.Fish are still pretty few and far between. Once January rolls around, the chances of encountering one increases greatly.
I've been enjoying using my spinning setup this season and will continue to do so. I like the versatility of being able to drift open bailed and switching to spoons or spinners with ease...
If you look down on a fisherman because of their gear then you are obviously ignorant and it also says something about your personality...Hearing elitists snicker about someone else's gear choice just gives me more incentive to hook fish above said 'elitists' with 'inferior' gear.
It's not what you use but how you use it, if you can't figure that out then you have lots to learn.
Well, at least it wasn't a guy with a spinning rod. ::)

SPIN GEAR!!?! EEEWWW
whenever I see some dead-beat beak break out a spin rod in the same run that I am working I immediately pack up and head back to the truck in disgust. I would never EEEEVER lower myself to fish in the vicintiy of such a noob.
Im usually so shook up by this that I usually have to make a stop over at Freds and re-charge up on my river-snob cred and I will most likely purchase some simms gear or better yet, a SAGE STICKER ,to put on my truck so EVERYONE! will know that I am a TOP ROD. I mean, so what if I havent landed a steel since 2012??. The run is getting worse and worse every year....
:P
Lol
You must at least know paddle board Pete then 8)
Is he still around?
The dreaded DFO DonnyOr report-you Ray.
my set up is a loomis 11'4 rod and campbell reel...very light...I'm getting on in years and of course when steelheading i'm including bushwacking and kms of river exploration...compound that with my 200 lb frame and bad back...and well...you get the picture. There is solution to your problem here:
no offense taken, reality is I'm not the same person I was 20 years ago.
Back on track, -3 this AM so conditions should be good, unless the quake brought down some more slides. :PLets hope for the best
Top Rod.... ;)Couldn't resist it could you ;)
River was in prime shape this morning but it was very cold and slightly windy, about -4 degrees. Things should be good over the next couple of days. You can check out my report under the reports section if you'd like.
-4? where were you fishing??I was fishing the lower from Peach down. It wasn't horribly windy but it was very cold.
I was out in lower and it was pretty bad and really windy!! temp was -4 and it was really windy!
Upper was worse -7 where we were at.
Nicolas, I couldn't find your report under "the report section", where is it ?I think you have to either be a subscriber or have posted 50 times to view member reports. Not 100% sure, maybe someone can clarify?

The recent rain (Slush...snow -> Melting) should bring in more STEELHEAD
GOOD LUCK ALL!
I am reading the river level at the Vedder Crossing station showing only 1.63m. Haven't seen the river that low in beginning January for years. Most years around this time the level hovers around 2.00m. The recent dry and cold temperature just drops the river so much, and yesterday's rain hasn't done anything to raise the level. Looks like good steelheading days on the C/V are still quite a way unless you have a boat to fish the mouth.
If I'm not mistaken.Yes you are correct, it is located at the rock point at the end of this picture.
Those little orange bouys strung above and across the river just below the X-ing is where the level is monitored.
Its been really hit or miss lately. Not a whole lot of fish moving through due to the low water, just a couple trickling in here and there. Although rain would help push more fish in, it also means there will be unfavourable conditions for a while after any significant rainfall due to the clay banks.Hit or miss is the story of winter steelhead fishing.
Just wondering, has the access been closed to the train bridge from the Chilliwack side yet, via Keith wilson?
Thanks for the photo. Called Fred's and no fish weighed in today and I guess fish just can't see through all that muddy water. So tomorrow may be a good bet.

So tomorrow may be a good bet. Some nice fish were caught but not taken to freds regardless of the conditions, lets hope this rain and higher water sees a nice push of some chrome for the weekend warriors now that being said i hope most of them stay at home :P

yesterday i decided to start at the spot down the road going back on the south side, after the Tamihin bridge. Drove down the road still dark and it looked to be fine. Halfway there I realized I was basically driving on ice. Didnt really see what I was into until dawn. In retrospect I would have never gone down there. Lucky I didnt end up in the ditch. Anyone driving down there wait till you can see where you are going.
Fished all day. Lots of different places. Nothing. But thats my pattern. Might as well fish in my bathtub, but the views and hiking are way better out on the C/V
Loose lips sink ships or in this case your favorite area to fish. Or it is a ruse to move the pressure from one's productive run. This kind of report just puts more pressure on a endangered stock of fish.

This kind of report just puts more pressure on a endangered stock of fish. Its the vedder its always gona be way way way over crowded. As for the endangered stocks its why there is hatchery steelhead there will always be more as long as the government funds it lol. But if we are worried about the wild fish by catch and mortality rate then maybe its just best to close the river to fishing from December to July.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this thread about river conditions. I thought fishing reports were to be posted under fishing reports, thus no trolling. Just saying

Going to love to see the guys line up Gun Barrel Saturday morning.Counted 10 cars parked at Wilson road this afternoon...

sorry they were all mine cars actually... I parked them there to keep the spot to myself. ;Dbetcha you'll be bringing more cars come tomorrow

Why does it always happen to the weekend warriors? Time for dim sum instead!!!
Go fish another river if the vedder colours up. :o
Wait.

Here's the little wild my dad landed yesterday morning.
I lied I thought the Chilliwack river and the Vedder river were 2 different rivers.
Upon further research I've come to the conclusion that they may infact be the same river.

Here's the little wild my dad landed yesterday morning.
Hes calling it a wild fish? Looks like a hatchery fish- no adipose fin evident.
If it is a wild, that pic seems a bit rough for the fish...sorry for the pointing out the obvious.
Got lucky this morning!
this is a hatchery ?
You're giving a guy a hard time over fish handling skills but you can't tell the difference between a hatch and wild?Hmmmm.... You`re say that this wild steelhead has his fin naturally cut?
I am not giving nobody a hard time, just an observation, no blaming at all, we all could do better in handling fish...myself included.
That fish looks to me having the fin half cut.

p.s. I know its cold , but I would shake your hand if you would keep those godly looking fishes in a water ... from pics you posted you have waders , go a bit , kneel down and hold it in a water dude . other than that good job :))))
First fish is clearly wild. I would have kept it in the water for the pic but I have no reason to believe the fish was harmed.ty
Second fish is clearly hatchery. I wouldn't even classify this as a misclip since the "lobe" is clearly flush with the back. Those who said wild clearly haven't caught enough hatchery fish.
This chart made the rounds a few years back. I believe it came from Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, so it may not translate directly to BC. I had a chat with a CO a few years back and he used the clear definition of no hanging lobe as the best indicator of a hatchery fish.

I totally sh** the bed on sunday losing 3 myself
Believe me it is very hard to get the right clip on a small wriggling fish ( even when lightly sedated) with a tiny pair of scissors :-\
Then you may understand why some clipped fish seem to have an adipose fin intact ???
lots of people out there todayNobody works anymore?
Dad went 1/3 this morning; the one he landed was approx. 14lbs or so and a wild. And of course I was stuck at school.

Given how much you've apparently been out recently, forgive me if I don't feel bad for you. LOLHahahaha, I don't blame you. However, im only really able to fish weekends ;D
On the fly?
Looking fwd to see some of your new creations(flies).
Any update on the current water clarity?River was in good shape this AM with good clarity but it will likely blow out again due to the rainfall expected tomorrow through the weekend.
Water was awesome today! Saw a hatch get bonked across from me today at first stop. I managed to get a hatch to shore but it was not size worthy for tagging. Good i let it go, cause within 5 more casts The float slammed down hard with a much larger fish only to give a couple of head shakes and gone. Of course that drew some attention and it got a little bit claustrophobic after that so I went to next stop.
Was a great timing move because after only 15 min, and only four of us around, guys at both sides of the river had a double header going.
And then I look up river and another guys got one on! Ended up two were wild and one was about a 12lb hatch this nice fly guy let go!
I did manage to get stripped of shrimp twice but no hatches today. Great day today.
12lb Seaguar STS , first time using flouro leaders , are they more susceptible to this kinda thing?!
Lots of rain coming down and water is rising. Be surprised if it's even that fishable this weekend considering how long it's been taking to clear up after past rainfalls.
Did you moisten the part where the knot was formed? It can get brittle/damaged if you tie a knot when the line is completely dry.
I'm calling it the Magic Trick because it was only in the water for 3 swings before it struck gold !!

Edit - The one I got my fish on was the exact same as the picture however I omitted the pink/white Lady Amherst from the pattern.
No surprise that the river is very high and very brown. Don't think it will be fishable this weekend.Come on, man. Throw us weekend warriors a bone! Sunday should be better? Stick to the upper?
Nice.......and thanks for sharing. I thought you decided to fish unweighted flies this year? If you don't mind me asking, why that decision?
How bad is it out there?
River was high with about 12"-18" in the upper and almost 0 below tamahi. There was still lots of guys out and most runs were being hit hard. I feel bad for the guys fishing tomorrow as it will probably still be tough conditions and even more of a gong show. Its always a gong show.
Its always a gong show.
Very true. Hooked all 3 of the ones I lost last weekend following my dad downstream
Poor dad. :-(
Man forecast says its gona be raining for a while. . .oh well it will only bring more fish into the system.
River up 3 feet and rising but the rain has stopped now, mild too so snow level way up.Hope that clay slide held up, looked like a nuclear bomb went off in the area.
You weekend warriors have really got the shaft this year.... ;D :PSome people have to work for a living.
You weekend warriors have really got the shaft this year.... ;D :P
You must have a crush on good ol Johnny Canuck Milo! He seems to be always on your mind! Sweet dreams! :-*
Of course, there are some who can fish in zero visibility because they "know how to fish in such conditions". ::)
You must have a crush on good ol Johnny Canuck Milo! He seems to be always on your mind! Sweet dreams! :-*
milo what version of "You are always on my mind" do you prefer, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson or the Pet Shop Boys when you think of Johnny?
Ya don't go tues...or wed...only the best days after letting pressure settle and more fresh fish push in...not!
Get a job with shift work and stop complaining!I'm retired bud. Keep working and contributing to my pension...
I'm just joshin ya but the weekend warriors really have had the shaft in terms of conditions.
Or so I hear, I don't fish weekends ;)
Ya because fish don't bite on the weekends right???
Ya because fish don't bite on the weekends right???AH the old "you should have been here yesterday" fish story lol.
Nice read.
BUT! This is this river conditions thread.
There is a reports section (perhaps you have no access yet).
May be we should have just one thread for the entire forum.
Just a thought 8)
Nope.... this is a Steelhead Fishery Information and River Conditions thread
The excitement of that kind of fight with a large steelhead in fast water is often a memory of a life time,Great point! Yes, you never forget the epic battles, the memories last a lifetime. I have fished steelhead for 30 + yrs now, and will never forget the steels that have kicked my butt on the rivers. One on the Gold, a couple on the Stamp, Cowichan , Thompson and the most recent one last yr on the Vedd. It is a humbling experience and leaves you shaken to your core. It's what keeps us coming back for more and feeds the addiction.
No go pro....so here is my running commentary...
Had another late afternoon epic battle yesterday with a huge Steelhead doe. It hammered down hard on my offering, then run straight for the deep fast current. Pulled me along with it down stream , heading right into the tailout and over the riffle.... after which it got into and under the roots of a tree that had fallen into the river....NOOOOOOOOO!!!! .... I actually managed to get it out of there and the fight was on again.... YEAHHHH...... then it dove right under the roots again.....line tangled up....NOOOOOO..... I got right up to her.....she laid over on her side, beautiful hatchery Doe, just a bit of pink blush on the cheeks....with my free hand I grabbed the tail ( could barely fit my hand around it ) ... and with a great big head shake she broke off and was gone, no way I could hang on to her....NOOOOOOOO.....
Was a great battle ..... I was completely out of breath and just stunned. It was at least 15lb if not more.... definitely a derby contender.
So alas..... I have still to actually catch my first Steelhead ever......
Could not stop thinking about it all night. So wish I was not working today. :o
I feel your pain bobby! I had almost the exact same experience last year.Lesson learned. I only ever cast to a fish in spots where I can safely land a fish.
Hooked and played a bullet hatchery doe, easy 10lbs +...but I was on a steep high gravel bank and I just knew I had no way of landing it - too deep to wade in and shore too high for beaching.
Lesson learned. I only ever cast to a fish in spots where I can safely land a fish.Sometimes you have to gamble for reward,I try to fish every little pocket, log jam,I never really even think about where I'm landing the fish till it's on,lol, might not be the best way to fish, that's just how I roll. ;)
Sometimes you have to gamble for reward,I try to fish every little pocket, log jam,I never really even think about where I'm landing the fish till it's on,lol, might not be the best way to fish, that's just how I roll. ;)Exactly! you will be surprised what landing area you can work with when that silver bullet is on the line.

This is my mentality. Worry about hooking a fish first. The. Worry about landing it.
You can't worry about the fish you're not catching...
Bette to lose one then not have one on IMO

Are you guys members of PETA or something?
We're all out there with the purpose of imbeding a sharp metal object into a fishes face, then playing it on a string until it is so weak it has no energy left and gives up.
I'm talking within reason guys ("people" for the raw vegans) I can't really think of a spot on the Vedder where it's impossible to land a fish. Tough yes, impossible no. Every time you lose a steelhead I hope you guys are marking it on your license then.
Yea it seems like that is the new thing this year. Is it really necessary on the C/V? where cant you get access with a short walk?I see a two man pontoon boat, a red raft and a blue raft on a regular basis. Looks like the big Blue one with the propane heater on board is a guide. Same oars man with different anglers on board every time I see it.
Was lucky enough to have a weekday off and get out there. River is a bit high but with good vis in the upper and mid. I'm actually shocked by how many guys were out there today. Not really much difference between a Tuesday and Sunday. I find Saturdays are still by far the busiest day. Sounded like a really slow day out there, was expecting it to be better considering the conditions and time of year.
Definitely lots of people out. Vis was quite decent and water a little high. Fished lots of fishy water from mid to lower river and got skunked again for the 8th trip in a row. Used up another vacation day to get out and it beats working but damn this is reminding me of my first steelhead season 4 years ago. Not a bite yet and I have only seen 1 person with a fish.
I also had a look at the derby numbers and it makes me feel a little less dejected. Last year there were 211 fish weighed in for January. This year there were 70.
Can someone explain to a newb why the number of females weighed in greatly outnumber the males?
or ... we are seeing the effects of poor ocean survival ie, warmer ocean temperatures impacting available food, and a massive toxic algal bloom last summer.
Our spring spawner counts will be interesting.
Can someone explain to a newb why the number of females weighed in greatly outnumber the males?
I've also heard this is the return year that they released a lot of undersized fish which led to poor ocean survival.Exactly so.
I think the answer to your question can be as simple as "ROE"
I might be wrong and there could be some scientific reason behind this, but I think a great amount of stealheaders choose to kill a doe over a buck couse they get stealhead roe, which is great bait to catch more stealhead lol...
I could be way off with this one , just a thought...
I would be very surprised an angler who has spent days trying to catch a hatchery steelhead would release a male. For sure the top rods who fish every day release hatchery fish, but they are few and far between, imo.It was just my opinion, on the other hand I don't think anglers go steal heading to catch a hatchery stealhead, I think they go steal heading becouse they love fishing and stealhead is a top prized fish to catch so it just normal human nature that anglers would like to catch these magnificent creatures.
I've also heard this is the return year that they released a lot of undersized fish which led to poor ocean survival.
I've also heard this is the return year that they released a lot of undersized fish which led to poor ocean survival.
It's definitely nothing to do with the hatchery releasing undersized smolts.Dan, this thread was about Chilliwack- Vedder steelhead, and I do believe releasing undersized, non smolting parr are a possible reason for poor returns for hatchery fish on the C-V, but your observations for other non hatchery systems are even more fodder for the theory poor ocean survival conditions have had an impact on adult returns.
These are the worst returns I've ever seen. I think I only hit 8 steelhead in 12 trips in January on the island, on 9 different rivers. Kitty only got a handful, buddies only hit 2 on those trips. Most of my buddies were under 10 fish for the month as well. There is only one river I've really heard of out here fishing well, and I'm sure you have heard of it since it's being averadvertised by everyone.
I've been hoping they are late... I'm quickly giving up on that after nothing showed up after this past huge rain.
Seals ate all the fish.do any of them offer a guided day trip?

If the coho return was low too wouldn't that point to the ocean temps?
Water looked fine when I looked 2 hours ago at Lickman, of course conditions could change at any time. About 10 celius now. Wind has died down and no rain. The lawn looks like it starting to grow too. ???You fishing bud? How many fish have been tubed so far?
Still high? The river is under 2 meters. When do you consider it not too high?Below, water graphs are just that getting out in the field is the best way to judge the situation.
Below, water graphs are just that getting out in the field is the best way to judge the situation.
You are assuming that I haven't been out on the river.
The difference between where the river level is now and where it was when everyone kept saying it's too low is 1 foot. So. I ask you again when do you consider the river to be at an ideal level?

Absolute joke out on the water today.Let's hear it...
Saw a spectacular Buck landed for the hatchery tube. Easily 16+ pounds . Stunning fish.I would have preferred to see that fish alongside a fecund lady fish in Centennial Channel this spring. But that's just me 8)
the reason its so busy is all the pictures being posted on fb pages the last week !!Nailed it
Nailed it
You complain, and say nailed it, yet you post pictures on the largest forum in B.C. It reaches a much wider audience than a privacy set facebook account would. Then you name and ask for information on a small river on your own thread and ASK for people to post pics of it :o Better give your head a little shake...
Fred's has commercialized this river completely the past 3 years. It will always be incredibly busy from here on out. No matter who posts what pictures, wherever they want, it will always have an insane amount of people just due to the (often exaggerated) Fred's reports.
Not only that, but a bunch of lesser known flows have seen a 100% (probably more) increase in anglers this past year due to some of the newer employees (at "the shop") with no regard for how sensitive and special those flows are. It's only a matter of time before you have to bring your own rock to every flow from Vasncouver to the Thompson. It'll only get worse.
Can't we all just agree to blame Rodney like the good ol' days
Chris' old videos of salmon season show that the Vedder was a gong show way back in the day as well. Steelheading back then may have been a different story?
With the increase in population, google maps, and internet forums it will no doubt add bodies.
Reading all this I am scared to go out there, maybe the reason I have not had one outing for steelhead this year. :PNice salary dump by the Leafs ;D
Of course as FA knows I have been busy making Leaf trades. ;D
50 years ago they were also killing wilds at will.Very true, and probably one of the reasons there are fewer wild fish today.
wow!...so many anglers passionately protecting steelhead in a hatchery enhanced river like the vedder. New anglers want advice about fishing and freds is now the bad guy? Is chilliwack dart and tackle next? Berry's bait and tackle also on the hit list?? If we dont encourage new people to start fishing.....then the funds used to stock hatchery fish in lakes and rivers will stay stagnant. The recreation needs new anglers every year. It provides jobs and adds to the local economies like chilliwack and Richmond, . Many anglers try for a year then just give up when they dont have success.....because they are newbies and its bad to give them tips to help them become better fisherman on the internet. So i guess rodney should be blamed as well because he tries to forward the fishing community with his website. If the angling pressure continues the steelhead will continue to be raised in the hatchery...they may even increase egg production.....year after year for anglers to catch more fish. AS usual we all act like we own the vedder.......again.. ::)
Hordes of warm wet rain in the forecast.
Just in time to blow the river out for the weekend.
What else is new? :-\

[img] Guys that have never fished the river somehow know every half decent hole on the river...
Below Allison was poopy, above Allison the water wasn't actually too bad. Picked up enough bottles and cans to pay for my gas + coffee ;D also shoutout to whoever cleaned up the area of all the crap just below Prison run and stacked it up nicely; next weekend if it is not gone i'll pick it up.how much was your gas 1 dollar? lol
how much was your gas 1 dollar? lolI drove 3/4 of the way up Chwk Lake road in order to take photos of the mountains with the clouds rolling in so gas was more than $1
Looked fishable at the Crossing at 11 but maybe it changed later in the day. :-\How's the brood stock capture program going?

Fishing picked up a lot in the last week
pics or it didn't happen :)36.5" of uh, not so chrome steel
Well.... picked up for me at least ;D 6 in the last 5 outings.
This is my brother's first year steelhead fishing so I have been desperately trying to get him into one whenever he comes out. Hooked one last night, rod handed over, played out, leader snaps at shore, gone. Hooked one today, rod handed over, played out, go to tail her, the leader snaps and she narrowly escapes my grasp. Making it interesting ;D water is really nice colour right now.
Well.... picked up for me at least ;D 6 in the last 5 outings.
I must be doing it wrong.... So many outings now and I get skunked on every one. First light to dusk, upper and mid mostly. Lost 1 in Jan and 1 in Feb.
I too am trying to get my first ever steelhead
Yup, that is what I do.
Been out at least 15-20 times now and nothing landed. Lost 2. I have seen quite a few landed in areas that I fish.
Seriouly tho'....am I doing it wrong.... esp. with the float?
When I float for them, I just let the float drift, no hold back at all 'cept to keep the line up off the water.
My float sits up dead straight in the water, but I see almost every other fisher has the float almost laying flat on the surface and it sure looks like they are holding it back too.
i have not had anyone really 'educate' me on the Steelhead method, I just go by what I read on the interweb.... 'dead drift, dont hold back' .... but I am starting to doubt my 'technique'.
I toss out and get a sense of the depth and then shorten up by 1-2 ft, my leader is average 18-24 inches. I peg a bead, use a roe sack, pink and white worm, jig etc and switch 'em up fairly often. I start at the top of a run and work my way through it, starting close and working out farther.
Really I guess this post is just borne out of frustration..... or just plain bad luck.
Def not about to give up but it sure is a haul from Coquitlam to Chilliwack only to get skunked time after time.
:o :o :o
You are not alone Bobby. I am on the same boat as your are. I have been out at least 40 times in the last 2.5 years with no success :( .Key tip: Don't get discouraged! A really useful tip that I use every time I am out is to fish every piece of water. You'd be amazed where a steelhead will hold. Hide-and-seek fishing ;D

Yup, that is what I do.Sounds to me your doing nothing wrong. Perhaps a tweak or two is needed that is all. Observe and ask questions. This yr has been tough. I been Steelheading 30+ plus yrs and have caught a few thousand steelhead in my lifetime so far. This yr? 20 times out fishing 4-6 hrs per day, covering a lot of water every time. I have not yet put a fish on the beach this season and have only hooked and lost 3 so far. Last yr I was into double digits this time last yr. Lol.

Kudos on your success SilverChaserThank you! It really is a lot of luck as well, and this year is a bit of an off year. Just been super lucky this week. Keep at it!

It seems to me you are doing everything right. The only thing I could suggest is that quite often in clear conditions the water is actually quite deeper than it looks. As I mostly fish jigs I will set the depth by purposely tapping bottom a few times and then shorten depth beneath float. I am amazed how often the water is actually 2 to 3 feet deeper than it appears to me. Using this method I can be sure that I am in the strike zone.

water is in great shape. really warm too. one of three for our group of three today.Beauty fish! I have fished that spot many times this yr without any success. This one time when I was in band camp, I had a real good tap tap through that run, but could not get the fish to commit. Lol. That spot is easily identified for anyone who fishes the river a lot. It sees a lot of pressure every single day. There are cars parked at that pullout always. There are no secrets on the Vedd. Just have to be at the right place at th e right time!

Has it really been that tough this year here as well? Island is dead, but I've had a few buddies who have been hammering them here, especially in the last 2 weeks. My buddies are hammering them on the island.
My buddies are hammering them on the island.
Ive been out 11 times now, 4-6 hours per trip, fishing a lot of nice water and I have not touched a steelhead yet. Not a bite. In those 11 trips, Ive only seen 2 fish caught by other people. Seems to be the same story most are telling according to the people Ive talked to on the river. Worse ways to kill a day though so I keep going back.I've only seen one fish landed by another angler who was across the river from where I was. But hey in the grand scheme of things. One has good seasons and bad seasons. It's a bonus to be able to be out there and enjoying the river and the scenery.
It's a bonus to be able to be out there and enjoying the river and the scenery.+1 to that.
+1 to that.
Nothing for my dad or I this morning and didn't hear of anything hooked or landed. Rain in the forecast for the week.
You almost tailed that one yesterday tho ;) ... And to think I left that small side channel when I first past it lol
How's it looking? Thinking about making the long drive if it's in shape. Any info is appreciated. From Surrey?
Milo, what few hatchery fish make it through the angling gauntlet don't usually show up at the hatchery till about mid to late April. Stay tuned to what Buck and I see in the few spots we monitor in the upper river, beginning early April. We have 5 years of previous observations from the same sites and same dates ... should be interesting. That means I will be the only old timer not to wet a line for steelhead this season, even Lew has been out once. ;D ;D
I plan to fish again next week, first time in 2 years; a retired FO and I plan to go out for a day or two and I have to say I am looking forward to it, but mainly for the friendship we developed over our years working together :)
Despite the seemingly fewer fish, it's still a beautiful river and I'm happy you two had a good day ;)

But if I do get out I will get one on my first trip. ;D ;D ;D
Great link Dave!
Apart from the yuck factor, they are harmless if you freeze or cook the fish properly. Raw fish is another story. I have seen them in quite a few sockeye, pink, coho and steelhead.
Never found any in a chum or chinook. Probably just a matter of chance.
So if I am reading the article correctly, krill eat anisakis eggs, salmon eat krill, seals eat salmon, seals then host the parasites until they mate and hatch, and then the seals cupcakes anisakis eggs back into the ocean. Neat, eh?
So COOK OR FREEZE YOUR FISH THOROUGHLY!!
Somebody told me most salmonids have those beasties in their guts.
I've seen this parasite in many sockeye and a few coho, most often on the liver. Still want to see pictures for a proper identification though ..

Good fishing for the past two days following a slow week prior. Hooked one yesterday after-eve and three this morning from 7-9am.LOL! and you wonder why the Vedder is crowded ;D
So I'll bite, pun intended ;) what is that on your plate??
Back in the day, I used to do entire shifts at the fish plant with a pair of tweezers pulling worms out of salt cod. They were easy to spot as they went brown in the pickle. We used to stick the fish over a lit box with a glass top. Never affected my love of salt cod and scrunchins and chow chow,- YUMMY!

Hey Milo, the White Spring Sashimi God, you need to listen to your own words or worms in this case. ;D Those are exactly the little gutt buggers that are in all salmonids - including your beautiful White Spring. Often these little worms start off as a little spec or ball that is easy to miss. I've popped a few of those little balls in the past to find a tiny worm. :P So next time you have an itchy nose, ear, bum or throat - think of these worms and the wonderful White Spring sashimi or sushi and imagine if that's one wiggling around inside looking for some fresh air. :o
Thanks for your concern bud. :)
But all my fish regardless of the source and gastronomic purpose get the deep freeze treatment before consumption. And for the record, I don't consume white springs from the Vedder - not even silver chrome ones. They are the durian of the salmon - tasty, if you can put up with the smell. I can't. :(
Eventually learned to resist fresh smoked salmon and now freeze first before smoking.
More broken cell membranes?Dobrolub, I think you nailed it. The thawing process breaks more cell membranes and the flavours penetrate the meat more thoroughly and evenly. Thank you.
Escape the crowds, beeks, insane traffic, worms, lack of fish, claybanks, etc etc,. Costco Atlantic Salmon fillets are by far the finest
on the BBQ or in the smoker.

Was low balled on a lower run this morning.I was following a nice older gentleman down the run, when this guy on the Yarrow side starting hollering at his buddy who was walking up the Rotary trail, to fish opposite of him on the Sardis side. Lol. Three beaks then emerged from the bush and starting fishing the tail out of the run we were working down too. Disgusted I left the area. This, and the fact I can't bounce around on rocks like I used to do is pretty much why I stopped angling. Still like walking the river trails daily and will be counting fish in the upper river in about 2 weeks 8)
Nice medium flow. Good visibility from top to bottom. Bottom has a bit of color. Good conditions. Was very surprised by the amount of anglers out on a Monday in the middle of March. Usually the crowds diminish by now. Went up river and found every pullout with 2-3 cars parked. Fished a few more spots in between the pull outs and despite prime water conditions found no love or saw anyone else finding love. Cheers. Next time!
........river is noisy but i can hear someone approaching from behind. I turn around and I see a clown show walking down. first guy approaches, gum boots with tucked in jogging pants, tackle box and rod in one hand, full on rum and Coke WITH ice in a glass cup jingling away as he walks up to me...wtf? This guy serious? Guy number two dressed the same except he a rod and 2L of Coke in one hand and a 26 of rum in the other hand. Guy three was a walking Simms catalogue, new everything...jacket, waders, boots, toque, carry a couple nice rods. This spot has enough room for two friends to fish it, so now there ar four of us. These guys weren't too chatty and seemed to be professionals at mean mugging so I put a couple more out there and left.......did they look like this??????????? Oh man that was probably the best thing i read on this forum in a while. . . LOL a scene right out of a Canadian classic show.X2 ;) Loved that show and still watch re runs. Back in my youth I can remember a Ricky and Julian; Bubbles not so much but imo, he was the best actor in the cast. True Trailer Park Canadiana :)

and the river was pretty much empty. hardly any fisherman and no fish.
Lots of the usual guys up at the cement slab but that was it.

What you think would happen when u started your own site lostsockeye. Posting pics and reports brings people out DUH!got a link again? I havnt seen that since it was first spammed on fwr.. I could use a good laugh.
ED, what do you recommend drifting in coloured water this time of year, bright blades? Are the bubblegum worms still any good or shrink down to single beads?
