Title: 2009 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates
Post by: Rodney on December 10, 2008, 04:42:26 PM

Between early December and late April, the Chilliwack River offers a productive winter steelhead fishery for both local and visiting anglers around the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. While other nearby systems also provide such a fishery, the Chilliwack River tends to yield more success due to the amount of fish being produced by the Chilliwack River Hatchery. This thread has several objectives:

Fishing regulations

Regulations for the steelhead fishery differ slightly to the fall salmon fisheries in BC, so please familiarize by going through the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations) from time to time if unsure. For the Chilliwack River, anglers should be aware of these regulations. Please report violators by phoning 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).

Fish species and identifications

While the primary target species is steelhead in this fishery, several other species may also be encountered. It is important to know the morphological differences between these species.

Steelhead's life history is similar to pacific salmon's. It is a variation of rainbow trout, which has an ocean phase. Unlike pacific salmon, steelhead may not die liek pacific salmon after spawning. Size range of steelhead from the Chilliwack River ranges between 6lb and 15lb, while bigger fish have often been recorded every season.

Several identification keys can be used to recognize a steelhead. Its white gum and tongue, lack of teeth behind the tongue. Once arrived from the ocean, its body is silver with heavily spotted back. Its tail is spotted from top to bottom and it is not forked. During spawning phase, pink and red colourations become apparent on the gill plates and across the body. Below are additional photos that may assist you.

Resident rainbow trout can also be caught while targeting steelhead. Unlike steelhead, they are typically under 18 inches in length or 2lb in weight. Only hatchery rainbow trout can be kept.

Bull trout are often encountered while targeting steelhead and they are required to be released. Their size ranges between 1lb and 10lb. Bull trout can easily be identified by its white and pink spots across the body. Their mouth is large and extends way behind the eyes. The end of their pelvic fins is often white.

Coastal cutthroat trout travel in schools. Several identification keys can be used to differentiate them from rainbow trout. Their body and tail are heavily spotted from top to bottom. An orange slack can be found on the bottom side of the gill plate. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches. Only hatchery cutthroat trout can be kept.

Mountain whitefish belong in the salmonid family. While their body is similar to a minnow, one can easily identify them by locating the adipose fin. Their mouth is small and protudes slightly. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches.

Nice information Rodney for the beginning of another steelhead season.

No rain this afternoon so water should be prime for the first Iron of the season tomorrow. ;D ;D

Conditions worse then yesterday but fishable, 2 feet visablity. Spent some time on an easter egg hunt, when I should have been fishing.

I guess Chris has been slacking lately, I left the bottles behind for yeah.
Couldnt carry any more to fish comfortably.   ;)

Nice find, any drennans? I certainly donot need any more floats having over a thousand.

Conditions should imorove tomorrow if we do not get rain.

I went exploring some new water and they were just scattered along the bank, easy grabs. picked up well over 100 but only 3 were clear floats.

Looked OK when I looked this morning but it was from a distance. We had heavy rain this afternoon in the Valley but snow level was down on the mountains. No rain now and it should cool down by the forcast this evening. Of course there is always a chance clay from the slides can drop in at any time.

At least the gas is cheaper now and not so costly these days to drive from the Lower Mainland. ;D ;D

Water is getting quite low. Visibility was good, around 3 feet, maybe slightly more.
Freezing cold out today with very, very stong winds. Couldn't even cast properly.
Saw 2 fish rise, didn't see any caught. Not very many other people out today, saw maybe 10 from tamahi down to the train bridge.

Looks like snow is on the way. Was starting to spit when we left. Can't see the mountain anymore. Should make for some intersting driving if we get any accumulation.
Good luck  ;)

Snow coming in from the North East by the look of it.

We just visted the river and it is way to windy to try and get a proper drift so went to Tims instead.

Hows the river? ;D

The strong NE wind in the Lower will make fishing difficult at the best. Maybe you could find some sheltered areas up river and you will most likely have the river to yourself.

At least we donot have any snow like many other parts of the Province.

The wind was howling when I got into the Wack this morning.... so I went up river.  Gotr tucked away for about 30 min where the cold wasn't really an issue, then I hiked a lot, found some real nice water and did not come up with anything.  My hands are still a bit tingly.... :P

Hrm it was wind free pretty much everywhere I noticed today. Maybe the river valley had some gusts going through it.

Just shovelled off the driveway of about 5 inches of snow, it is now time for a double double at Tims. ;D

The snow has stopped but that chilling NE wind is still with us and most likely will get worse in the days ahead.

Decided to brave the elements and go out to the river today. Little bit sketchy driving in my light rear-wheel drive car, but made it the the river ok. Started walking the dike and wanted to go down. Snow drifts along the bacnk made the snow around thigh deep in places and you could not see the dike rocks underneath it at all. About 3 steps down the bank I ate it pretty bad, thankfully I was holding onto a branch and didnt rip my waders. Sheer ice under all the snow.

Made it down to the water and within around 30 mins all of my bait was frozen except for the lone roe sac I had put on my hook. Pretty much everything froze in that time. All the guides on my rod tip were frozen solid, I could harldey walk because my waders were covered in ice and felt like cardboard. This is what my float looked like after around 20 mins of fishing  ::)

While out there I almost fell 4 or 5 times on the sheer ice all along the edges. Have never seen anything like it before. There is snow everywhere and under it is very smooth, very slippery clear ice. The ice extends probably about 4 feet out from the edge where the water line use to be. The worst part in the last 2 feet of the ice "shelf" is only 2, maybe 3 inches thick at most and it breaks, so be careful if you are stepping on it.

Overall conditions were : very cold, too windy for my liking, super clear, and super super low. Going to be very hard to get anything out of there right now, but it is still worth pounding it if you are determined (and want frost bite). Some nice scenery to be had right now. And don't forget the gloves and toque.

Main point of this post is - BE CAREFUL out there right now. Conditions are not very safe. Take it slow and easy, and make sure you watch you step. Ill leave you with this picture of the "ice shelf"  ;)

Everyone,

Keep the person chit chat in private messages, emails or messengers please. It is frustrating for others to click on the thread expecting to read about river condition but only to find posts that are not relevant to the thread.

Also, Chilliwack River fishing reports should go into the fishing reports section (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?board=2.0).

Thanks all.

Wasn't really meant to be a fishing report... more of water condition and freezing cold weather report. Was out again today, more of the same. Crazy cold, make sure you cover every part of your body that you can. Its probably not even worth coming out right now, I don't even think I will be going this weekend, hands, toes and face are bright red right now and stinging like crazy  ::)...

Water report for today : Low, clear, and almost frozen. The lower has chunks of ice floating around everywhere and is pretty much flowing slush. The water is so cold, (below freezing I'm assuming) that since our line was moving the same speed it froze and everything got coated in ice. Within 20 mins I had "nature's flossing rig."  We left after around 30 mins because it was not worth fishing. In the upper you have the icing problem on your line, in the lower, if you somehow hook a fish a peice of ice will have you snapped off in no time. Might want to wait until warmer temps to come out here.

Well it is starting to warm up in the Valley, but with that comes more snow. Looks like more is predicted throughout the week, with a major dump occurring unfortunately on Boxing Day. If they have to postpone the Derby, hopefully they make the announcement early enough so people don't get caught in a snow storm. That stretch of Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Abbotsford can get real treacherous when it snows.

We are getting our share of snow now probably around 10 inches since yesterday with the current temperature at -4 but no wind to speak of.

The report I got today fishing is a bit dangerous out there with the snow and ice but the odd fish is being picked up for the brave that have been venturing out there.

O ate it pretty bad today, not just once, but twice  ::)  Be very careful... make sure you are careful with where you put your steps. There are lots of places where you can fall through ice below the snow and then fall as a result of that. The ice under the snow is clear and very slippery... as I learnt today.

Other than that nice to be out. Lots of eagles around, can make for some good pictures  ;)  Heard of 2 fish killed today and that was it, snow was falling pretty much all day, made for a long walk home tredging through the knee deep white stuff. Best of luck to all the people looking for a Chritmas Steel tomorrow  ;)

Water was still hanging in when I looked at it around 3:30 but we have been getting heavy rain and snow mixed, with a strong West winds. At least it is melting some of the snow. The temperature in the Valley floor varies from 1 to 3 C at this time.

When we left Prison Camp at 1 the water was really bad. Around 6 inches of vis (had decreased from 3 feet when we got there). Pretty sure we heard a slide, but with the sounds of blasting happening up the valley it was hard to tell. Probably will be blown tomorrow. Was almost a complete white out on the way down until around tamahi bridge.

conditions were decent yesterday, there is about 2.5ft of visibility with a tiny bit of gray visible, personally i'd like another half foot to foot of visibility but what ever, we all have our favs. Lots of access to the river from the roads, but walking in ice crusted snow, or one trails covered in ice is fun!  ::)

good luck.

Perfect conditions today, only saw 3 guys out. Not many places to park near the river if you plan on fishing up from the crossing, unless you are lifted or 4x4. Saw a small red car in the ditch, with a couple fishermen, and others helping to dig them out, good people.

I've found mid-mid/upper has been pretty cloudy with only a foot or less visibility in the last 2-3 days. As you get down to the crossing it seems to clear up to about 2 feet or so. Weekend should be in similar shape with cool temperatures predicted.

water conditions were sick today right from Keith Wilson up to the Cement Slab. Down low vis was 3 to 5 feet, and unlimited up top.  I would say that the river will hold out for the next day or so depending on the temp. I am headed out tomorrow for sure.

Water was perfect Monday. Fished Lickman to start then went upper river to find quieter water. Today should hold I would think but could start to go out quick as the forecast is a lot of rain and there is tons of snow to melt.

hey all, i was wondering if the vedder will be fishable on sunday?  planning on going to explore for the first time... maybe  hook my first steelhead...  got the fingers crossed....  but if the conditions are rough i might as well stay home with the ol' lady and have the day at the mall...i know you dont know really what will happen its the weather for petes sake  but does anyone have an idea?  thanks greatly
Look at the river gauge at the river levels site . If it goes past 3 meters at Veddar Crossing  by tomorrow it will take some time come back down . I would wait for it to drop below 2.5 meters or so coming down from 3+ before heading out . I would think Sunday will look doubtful at this time , it usually takes more then a week to drop that much . The level is shooting up rapidly now so I would expect it to get pretty high . 3 meters ,  by the way, is full blow out conditions, while 2 is low water .

Just had a look at the Vedder Bridge and the river is bank to bank and chocolate brown. It's going to be a few days for that to come down. Chwk Lake Rd having some problems with water and boulders, Cultus Lake Rd. was blocked this morning and now open to one lane.
Highway 3 closed in Manning Park, Coq. closed now and Highway #1 closed at Flood near Laidlaw with a slide. My rain guage says 107mm in the last 24 hours.
Good time to stay home and tye some flies or clean and oil up the reels!

It is at 3 now , which is completely choclate brown and would be considered by most most to be blow-out conditions . If you think it's prime and just a good flow , lets see you try crossing anywhere .
Looking at the graph it looks like it may hit 3.5 by tomorrow , when it was projected to peek . Should be at least a week before it drops even to a 2.5 level , which is still pretty high for Steelie fishing in the lower . That's about banks full level (3.5 is) at the train bridge .
Highest I ever saw it was 2 years ago when it got close to 4 meters and then the water was over the banks,  flooded the campsite ( which is outside the dyke ) . That day I looked at it from the train bridge and it was quite some thing to see , waves were pushing tree trunks up onto the steel protectors the bridge has around it's footings . There was a water moving at a pretty good pace along the dyke where you park your car at the Yarrow side and all the bush in there was being pushed over by the current.
The river itself under the bridge looked like the flow in the Fraser Canyon at that level .

I have sent a couple of pictures across the Ocean for Rodney to post. It presently is 3 to 4 feet below the top of the Rotary Trail at Lickman Road parking lot where I took the pictures.

I believe it will need about another rise of 1 meter at the Vedder Crossing gauge before we have a major flood like we have had in the past on the Chilliwack River. We have been lucky so far that we did not get a temperature of around 15 C or we would be in trouble.

The bad part for the fish and anglers could be that more clay banks may be opened up, even with the present river elevation.

It takes a tremendous amount of water to go from 3 meters to 4 . Living right by the river , I keep an eye on it all the time and will be surprised to see it go much past 3.5 . Even at 4 meters it still had about 8 feet of dyke left at the train bridge . I was pretty worried when it got to the 4 meter mark 2 years ago but I looked at the dyke at the time and have to give credit to our officials for the great job they have done with their dyke maintenance to keep us all safe . And this includes the gravel extraction , which is vital to maintain the level where it is , inspite of the well meaning , but misguided opposition of some . If not for those extractions the dykes would have to be continually raised as the bed fills in , which is impossible .
The upheavel that will be caused by the very high water will be so much greater then any extraction will ever be , that the extractions would be trivial by comparison . But the fish will survive this high water like they always have .
Anyway as the water goes way past 3 it takes a very large amount to maitain that high level and will drop very rapidly once the heavy rain subsides . Will probably get to under 3 meters in a couple of days , but then it takes some time to drop the next half meter , to where it gets into decent fishing levels again.

On our river we may not get to flood stage , but many others already have . Seems many hillsides are causing more trouble then the rivers . Cultas lake road got washed out and the news tonight reported a mudslide into some ones home on Veddar mountain road . Langley is also in bad shape with the Neckomekal as are many areas on the Island and elsewhere. Lots of people in trouble in this. Hope it passes quick.

I live near the Nicomekl River and as of 9 pm it is still not as bad as 2 yrs ago when it almost flooded our basement. Hope everyone makes it thru the high tide  in the AM ... I don't think it's as bad as last time YET!!

As for the Veddar I caught my 2 biggest Steelies in high and somewhat mucky waters....U never know :-\

Looks like the Chilliwack may have crested  at 5 am . Lots of rain still forcast but I think it's not going up anymore as of now. Will take lots of rain for more . I agree Weefish that big rain 2 years ago was worse bt a fair margin . Seems Langley gets it worse though .Those small rivers are the worst as they don't have the big capacity .

Everyday was all that water from the river coming over its banks or is that just from all the rain water and snow melt gathering in one area???

Was wondering the same? C.G.'s pic's show the river lower then I would have expected, choc. for sure but at it's level now it's similar to May fishing when the freshet has started....How the hell did all that water get up there???
Title: Re: 2009 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates

A lot of the flooding is from overflowing ditches and creeks that normally have substantially less water flowing in them. They are all up to the banks and in a lot of cases spilling all over roads and flooding out all the farmlands. I would assume that's how Greendale got so bad as I didn't hear of the Vedder ever breaching the dikes at any point. Greendale is also quite a bit lower elevation I believe and has a history of flooding. Still there are plenty of other flooded areas outside of Greendale that I've never really seen hit this bad.

I just checked it out, It has dropped alot like 3 feet, so Its on the verge of coming back into shape.

I couldnt get close to the river too see, but It looked to be a combination, of the river, side creeks, and rain pooling.
Keep your eyes open for fish when the water receeds, a few may have been push or ventured the wrong way and will be trapped in holding water.

The pumps that are along the Vedder Canal could not handle the volume of water from the drainage ditches created by the rain 166 mm ( 6 and a half inches for our Southern neighbors ;D) and the melting snow. Nothing to do with the Vedder as it did not even get over the first banks.
Title: Re: 2009 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates

It was not the Vedder that flooded. All the ditches on the sides are over flowing. One thing to be careful of while driving down keith wilson is to stay in the middle because you cant see the road at all and there are deep ditches on both sides of the road, so be careful.

Greendale is not the only area. Farefield Island, Yarrow, Prarie Central Road out by Promontory all have major flooding. Chance (the school) is big time flooded. Another bad part is Chilliwack Lake Road. Had a friend go up there yesterday and he said that half the road is missing from washouts and slides. The whole road is closed just after Pointa Vista cafe and you need to take a detour through the dubdivision to get around. He turned around at Allison Pools, aparentally the normal washout spot is ok.

Looks like they are forecasting another 30 mm of rain tomorrow... should be intersting to see what happens. Snow level is way down so we might be ok, hopefully  :-\

Just got back from the River.... Lower is still a puky brown colour with almost no vis at all. Even the creeks running into the river are not very good with about 1-2 feet of visi at most. Took a drive up Chilliwack Lake Road and wow. Tons of slides happened out there, 2 or 3 areas where only one vehicle can get through at a time because half the road is missing. Shouldnt be too long now if the rain decides to hold off  ;)

Still flooded just East of the KWB bridge. South Sumas Road area still a mess, a disaster area. Two TV satellite trucks there so there will be coverage on Global this evening.

Lots of traffic just looking like me but I have an excuse as I live in the area.

When I came home a chap came to test our tap water for bacteria, told us to boil it for now.

Visibility of the Vedder is about 4 to 6 inches, very light rain so far today and fairly cool with the snow level down low on the mountains

Anyone know the condition down on lickman?
Fishable this afternoon but it can change at any time due to the slides in the Chilliwack River Valley.

In talking to Dave at the flood meeting today the Slesse Slide has had some mud go over the berm we had built some time ago.

Definatley fishable today over the whole river. Hit tamahi for a while to no avail although I found the water perfect with around 2 feet (maybe more) visbility. Was out below Lickman from about 10-12 and visibility seemed to be about 1.5 - 2 feet. Has that cloudy silty green look to it which I'm not a fan of so I didn't stick around too long but it's fishable if you are looking to head out for the weekend. Of course Allison and above is in the best shape but I didn't bother heading up that way today.

Out for another 3 hours today, once again a lovely day to be out there. We have no fog like the Lower Mainland has. Visibility around 2 feet as dss reported. I fished some great water but had no success and I did not see any other fish caught by a good number of other anglers I saw in the area I fished.

Heard of two caught including one by "The Master", what else is new. ;D ;D  It was in the middle teens, a nice fresh run hatchery doe.

River seems to go in and out but if you can only fish the weekend it is worth going out but it seems the fish are few and far between but that could change of course at any time. ;D

You just have to go as much as possible and one day they will be there for you. With the higher water conditions and the color of the water the fish have so many places to lay in and feel comfortable at the same time.

As well the fish will be moving all times of the day so you never know when your float will be going down, thats steelhead fishing and what makes it so challenging. ;D ;D

Well bateman steelheading requires work and if you are just looking for action all the time then steelheading is not for you. This is not a fish where you can just be a fence post and chuck your gear at the same spot and be successful.

The slow fishing is not a good omen. You would think after all the high water  and in mid January that fishing should be great when the water is clearing up. All that talk of next to nothing for whole bunch of fishermen is not a good omen. But I hope fishing will heat up when the river drops more or a new batch of fish will arrive. Steelheading is hard to be certain from one year to another. This year only a couple of fish in the Derby, but one year (quite a while ago), there were 30+ fish in that year's derby. I hope the fish is just late. Good luck to all.

Conditions about the same as yesterday and lots of people were enjoying another nice day on the river although a bit of a NE wind blowing. When I stopped at a parking lot and picked up one bag of garbage and drink containers I heard of one fish taken and two lost. Also another report of two steelhead or the same one observed  rolling.

I did not fish but beside the bag of garbage got about $12 worth of bottles and tins, a Maple Leaf Drennan  ;D and enjoyed visiting with a number of anglers.

Im pretty sure the Ranger run slide has no let go. Visibility was clear at Allison at 1 ish when I went upriver. Fished pockets down from slab for a while and came back down to Allison where visibility was now about 2 feet at most. Lower (Lickman) was super bad at around 3 with only a foot visibility at best. Hopefully it was just due to snow melt from todays weather and will be back in shape by mid week.

Slipped down to the river at first light as we are now doing brood capture for the Chilliwack River Hatchery. As some fish were taken there on Saturday I had hoped if I did not get a wild fish for the tube someone else would.

Water conditions were not the greatest and the NE wind made it a bit cool. I fished and waited around for about a hour but none of the other 3 anglers in the area connected. All I got was a nice Maple Leaf DNE that was lodged in between some rip rap.

I cleaned up more garbage in this small parking area, getting my fourth bag in the 3 days I have started to clean it up. A couple more bags to do yet. It amazes me that there is a number of anglers and other users that continue to throw out their coffee cups and everything else under the sun.

Dean at Fred's Custom Tackle was good enough to allow me to put the garbage bags in their dumpster.
While I was there picking up the badminton racket that fly guy so kindly had left for me I was told a fellow brought in a fish a bit over 17 pounds this morning and took home the $100 for the first fish over 17 in the Wall Hall Jr. Memorial Steelhead Derby. Of course that fish sits on the top rung of the derby.

Just got a call from "The Master" and he hooked 2 this morning so I guess the conditions are not as bad as I thought, maybe I should have stayed out but am going to badminton instead, to try out my new racket. Nick said the river had come up again and I see by the Vedder Crossing gauge it is up 6 inches from 2 days ago. I guess the mild afternoon temperatures here in the Valley have created some snow melt. :o

Not much happening where I was, water was up a tad, and murkier then the weekend. Chris I made a nice pile of the beer cans i found, they are beside the river, directly out from the 2nd pull off above the crossing.

Not really the visibility that I am concerned with. It is the fact that the whole river looks like a shoot now. Very little holding water in most areas besides slots (what I have found anyways). Might want the vis to stay crappy so you can fish right at your feet.

At least you have one under the belt already Chris.  ::)

The good news with the visibility now is when it clears there will be fish throughout the whole system! The bad news is for those who cant find fish they will have to go to the swapmeets on weekends to be armpit to armpit (hopedale baily etc.) seen to many fish foul hooked last couple of years!

Back at it this morning for about 3 hours. The visibility remaining about the same,18 inches to 2 feet. A number of anglers I saw had the same non success as me other than I found another Maple Leaf DNE, about $2 worth of bottles and I just about completed my cleanup up of the parking area I have been working on the last few days. 5 bags picked up now.

Tomorrow is another day and I hope to improve on the one fish out of 6 trips with about a total of 14 hours of angling time. The weather once again was great and the wind was not too bad but the fish have so many places to lay in this less than ideal water conditions making finding them for this angler a challenge.

Any one out today that could give a water update.  Much appreciated.

Thanks
I decided to take the day off from fishing and went to badminton instead. Checked the Lower river at 4 PM and it looked the best it has been for a few days.

Hope it holds for tomorrow.

The Lower river as I mentioned yesterday has improved to closer to 3 feet than 2 feet of visibility I thought when I got out shortly after noon but it can change by the hour. Fishing was  ;D and if time permits I may give a more detailed report under Fishing Reports.

I did not get out to the river today to check it as we  had a Fraser River Gravel meeting for a good part of the day but I heard that the wind made things a bit miserable out there.

It is still blowing pretty good so if you are going out on the weekend, dress warmly.

The water seems to be clearing up a bit more each day now, vis mid river about 3 feet today.  Beautiful sunshine still but this morning there were large gusts of the coldest wind I've felt in years blowing.  Besides having to seriously protect my hands from frost bite in the first few hours, conditions are not too shabby at all...

Checked the river this afternoon and color was fine but it was way too windy in the Lower for me to fish. A few brave souls out and I heard of a couple of fish picked up.

Had a nice visit with Fly guy and Searun17 who stopped while I was picking up some tins, made $8 and found a loonie along with a Maple Leaf DNE float. ;D ;D

Also saw Xgolfman who was rigging up his Spey rod and would be trying to cast in the hurricane. ???

Hope the wind dies down for those that will be fishing tomorrow.

They kind of changed the forecasts again. Before they were forecasting 50+ mm, now only 10+. Right now with all the slides being unstable it wont take much at all to blow the river out. Any rise in the level could turn it totally grey. It is suppose to be cold all week so it should be ok as long as freezing levels stay low so most of the rain turns into snow.

Right now the water is in perfect shape. Good visibility with a green colour to it. Just watch the graph and make a decision based on that day. A large jump may indicate that it is blown out.

two weeks ago there was lots of fish caught in the dirtier water so dont let clarity keep you home. only way to catch fish is to get out there. using scented bait/lures will of course highten your chances in dirtier water and dont walk past even shallow fishy looking water because they will tuck into shore very close alot of times.

im hoping it clears up some for sunday as im heading out with the spey and last time i was out was in the dirty water  :(

The regular amount for a Sunday but there is always room. Also fish are on the move so you never know when a fish will move into the area you are fishing. Also do not worry if someone has fished the run before you as a little different presentation may trigger a take.

Today I fished a run, moved to another spot for a bit and then back to the starting one then the fish bite, actually twice before I finally hooked it.

Even with all the rain we had last night the river stayed in as the snow level was down. When I picked up a coffee at Tims cars coming from the East had some snow on them.

Fished from first light until about 9:30 and then went for coffee and did not see a fish during that time period but very few anglers around. One angler said he spooked a couple of steelhead while crossing a tailout of a run when it was still dark. Said he was as scared as much as the fish were. ;D

I was back at the river after the coffee break around 11. Sure nice to have longer than the 15 minute breaks we got at work. ;D

Fished some nice water until the end of tubing time, around 2:45 and did see a hatchery taken where I had just fished. ??? ;D Also heard of a 16 pounder taken and The Master lost one but that was it.Maybe some other areas saw some more fish taken. Water conditions improved as the day went on I thought and hopefully the fishing will tomorrow too.

Conditions much improved today as was the fishing for some. I did not get a bite but was able to tube one from another angler, thanks Larry. I will send Rodney some pictures of the tubing process if he wishes to post them on some thread.

The highlight for me was to give Jon two Maple Leaf Drennans, $3.50 worth of bottles, a coffee at McDonalds and some good fellowship with Gwyn and a number of other anglers.

Two days without a bite but maybe that will change tomorrow. :-\

Crazy slow today..... talked to one other angler (only guy we saw all day) who said he had been fishing since first light and had only caught a small hatchery (which he released to keep fishing). He also said he didn't see another fish all day which is crazy for the water we were fishing and for the length of time he was out.

Vis was great, conditions were nice, biting fish zilch.

Heard of 4 fish taken and that was it. Day ended by losing my Maple Leaf Drennan so came home disgusted.  >:( :( :'(. I checked a log jam on the way home hoping to find it's limp body but it was not there. However someone else's sadness was my delight as I found a replacement Drennan so now I will be able to go fishing tomorrow. ;D  ;D

Yes water is getting low.... wouldnt call it very clear yet. I would say 3-4 feet visi once again. Must not be any snow to melt because it was 10 degrees again today and water hasnt moved, in fact has gone down minimally every day.

The Ranger slide seems to seep more when it warms up, not sure of the reason. I think the river is great the way it is now, just gotta find the new "hot spot." They are around, and easier to find when the water is low.  ;D

With the rain we got last night and today the river appeared to be coloring up when I left it shortly after 9 this morning, but was still fisherable at that time. To cold and miserable to stick it out. ??? ::)

I had a meeting to go to with the City of Chilliwack anyway, I hope you got one or two when the bite came on.

I just checked the river after the meeting and it had colored up a bit more I thought from when I left this morning.

I guess the clay must settle out some as the water reaches the lower part of the Vedder.

Nice work on hooking 3 today, I fished everyday this week and did not hook one and the only chance I had I missed it three times. Hope the river improves or holds for tomorrow.

I didn't see any fish at all hooked or caught. Only one was weighed in at Fred's at around 3:00. Hit my hot spot that has produced the last 2 days and nothing.
As far as I was concerned visibility was terrible in the mid, only around 2 feet at most, was a little tricky to cross where I normally do as I had to "feel" my way across the bottom.
Hopefully a new push of fish come up overnight and tomorrow with the silty water and slightly higher conditions.

Water conditions are OK today but I have never seen so many anglers out there and every run had people fishing it. I could see 17 when viewing the river from Lickman and 25 from Peach. KWB had its share too.

Saw no fish or heard of any while talking to a few people and it certainly was a good day to leave the rod at home.

Super low, around 3-4 feet visibility in lower.
Apparentally (according to people at OTW this morning) a 22 pound Steely was caught in the lower this morning, can anyone confirm this?
Other than that I didnt hear of any fish caught, but then again I didnt have time to go to my hot spot  ;)

I once caught one of those monsters too, a wild buck with the size of a spring. Fought like a demon in the rapids and walked down seemingly endless stretch before it came ashore in a quiet pool. It was so heavy I could not pull it close to shore. It was eventually landed with the help of a older fisherman who told me he had never seen a steelie that huge. Too bad no camera in those days and had to let it go with the knowledge that it might be the largest steelie in my life but without a picture to capture it forever. Sigh, but truly thankful I got the chance to tangle with one of these magnificient steelies. That beast was at least a 3 to 4-salt fish. :)

Started out the day yesterday just below the vedder campground at about 8. My buddy and I thought the wind would be blowing hard but not so hard that we couldn't fish. We were wrong :o. We decided to move up river to get away from the howling winds. Hit up what I think was one of the nicest runs on the river just above Tamihi. Perfect water speed and color. Worked the run with bait bags, roe, blades, worms and jigs. I can almost guarantee no one was home because of the fact we threw everything we had!!!.  After that went back down to the train bridge. Wind had died down enough where fishing was possible. Same story, nadda. Weather was beautiful, water was fantastic, only thing missing was some steel dome. Great day in all and not many people out. Wishing I was part of the 10 percent that catch 90 percent of the fish. Get out and get em boys and girls!!! Cheers

the fact that u covered 2 runs all day is probably a reason y u weren't in the 10% club yesterday. i say covering water and finding an agressive fish is more productive than trying to entice a stale or pressured fish

I think the way I worded my post might have been misleading to some. When I wrote went back down to the train bridge, I didn't mean we fished the run at the bridge the whole day. Just used that as a reference point. There is a tonne of water to cover 1 km up and downstream of the train bridge. ;D

Maybe 12 to 14 inches at the most. That river now always has that grey look to it from those clay banks. Although without that color the river would be producing even less numbers of fish to be had. Just my opinion. Cheers

Just got back.... report will possibly follow if I have time.

Short story short, we were fishing up high and I heard a very muffled but large bang. 15 mins later the water went from 5+ feet of vis to less than a foot. My guess would be the Ranger run slide gave out again. Not sure how the water will look tomorrow, but maybe lots of colour will push in a fresh batch of biters  ;D  This was around 5 pm, and on the way down water was still clear at Allison.

Didn't look like it came up at all, and vis was same as every other day lately.

Fish were active today though, had one attack my float  :o

Was out today from about 10- 4:00.  Started out in canal, then worked some runs in the mid.  White out conditions at times, blowing snow sideways 40-80km for much of my day.  Water was slightly less clear as it has been recently (3 feet plus), and appeared to have risen only about 1"-2" since Monday.  Saw about 5 anglers all day, no fish for any of us, my boots are still 20lbs. solid clumps of ice,  I bought some new wool gloves, and saw 4 or 5 vehicles flipped and a few more in the ditch on my way home...

tight lines

Wind died down this afternoon and warmed up to a little above 0 so I headed out for three hours of fishing. Conditions were fine but I could not locate a fish.

This was surprising as there was only one set of footsteps through the runs I fished. Very few anglers around and heard of a couple of wilds taken when I talked to two different anglers.

Was a beautiful afternoon to be back on the flow after a cold had kept me home for the good part of a week.

Water seemed to color up some as I was leaving but the cool weather overnight should fix that.

Hey I got one of those for the first time this year too  ::)  Funny thing is.... after I missed the first float down (same spot) I went through again and snagged.... broke off, went through again for another 10 min (something didnt seem right) and even set deeper and never touched it again. Found that pretty wierd....

Anyways, heard of 1 hooked.
Saw a big one roll.
Water is a solid 3 feet of vis at the crossing with a nice milky green colour to it.

Alright Ghost Fish, I'll rephrase my query.  To those "in the know", that is, to those more experiensed with a sluff(sp?) as desribed at Slesse, would the river clean up enough by tomorrow to allow for a foot or two of visibility?
I did not look at it and not sure how much clay fell in so it I guess will be a toss up. Sorry thats all I can say. I will take a look tomorrow am and If I have not posted by 10 I will be fishing. ;D ;D
Sorry got a late start this am, still in the night clothes  :-[ and too much badminton last night. ;D ;D Will go and look in a few minutes before I have breakfast and go to Tim Hortons. Maybe if it is in good shape I will go to Cookies to celebrate. I will report back to anyone interested within the hour.

Conditions were good this afternoon.
Had 2 hours to fish, only decided to stay for one as the wind was really making it hard to cast.
That and I don't think it looks natural to have your bait going upriver  :D

Water has a very nice green tinge and around 2-3 feet visibility.
It looks very silty from up on the road but once you get down to it, it looks great.
Looks to have dropped a little, but it seems like a storm is heading our way with some pretty dark clouds incoming.

On the way back drove along the canal area, saw a few fishers out braving the wind and the cold. Water conditions were good.

Also saw a fire truck in the process of putting out a grass and brush fire at the base of the dyke road. Not sure if someone was trying to keep warm and the fire got away from them. :-\

Most of the fish that i've been seeing lately have been wild and in the teens, anyone else seeing this? I've heard that lots of the native fish return toward the tail end of the season, maybe that's what it is.

fished for a few hours today, 6 pound hatch bonked just before I got there, other than that there were no fish to be found. Water has a little more color to it. Weather was epic.

Even though we had some rain overnight the water was still Ok at first light. It has rained a fair amount since then so it is hard to say how long it will hold up.

Yes, there was another one caught I saw and that was it.

By the way, when are you going to have smaller floats out for sale? I wanted to give them a try but prefer smaller ones.

Even though the snow level was down a bit today and the rain stopped for a few hours we are having heavy rain now so conditions could be iffy tomorrow, in the Lower anyway.

Went out at just after 530pm and when I arrived at my spot the water was very cloudy, 1.5 feet vis... Threw on a larger offering, and worked down the stretch of river. Nothing for me or 3 other guys in the area.

Theres no way its gonna be nice for tomorrow morning.

This morning mid river 1-2 feet visibility - no love - But the fish gods were smiling down on us for a change and it didn't rain or snow or blow -  That was a real treat.
8lb hatch football bonked under vedder crossing bridge and weighed in at freds.  Caught on an orange gooey Bob

Water was 5+ vis up high (above Allison) and was increasing when we left at 7 ish.
There must have been a small slide at Ranger because water was around 2 feet when we got there at 4.

Vis is 5+ above Allison Pools.
Around 2 Feet at Tamahi (quite green/grey)
A little better at the crossing.

It has pretty much stopped raining/snowing here in Chilliwack but 20-30 cm of wet snow, 10 mm of rain in the forecast for tomorrow.

Chris, Every Day and other locals, given your experience and the weather forecast, what do you think we can expect for Saturday re river conditions?
I just got back from a look at the conditions at Lickman Road. I thought they were close to 2 feet but someone told me that it was getting a bit worse from earlier in the day. However it was good enough for a fellow I know to land one as he was packing a nice 10 to 12 pound hatchery doe up the bank while I was there.

Said it was his first hatchery of the season so he was very pleased with his catch as he should be.

Talking to some other locals and fishing had been fairly good this week. I noticed very little presssure in the areas I checked this morning.

Milo, no rain at the this time and no more rain forcast so should be worth a trip. I will be hitting the badminton court in a tournament this weekend so I will leave them for you. ;D ;D

Made it out for my 4th trip of March today......
Can't believe it's only that many, been so pre-occupied with working/homework and Cutty fishing on weekends

So far in March I am 2-4 trips out. Hooked 2 fish in last 3 outings...
Didn't see anything at all today, and we hit ALOT of water that has produced lately, pretty much fished throughout whole river.

Water is prime right now.....

3 Feet vis in canal at around 3 o'clock (from what I could see at highway bridge).
2-3 Feet of vis just above crossing at around 4 pm
1-2 feet of vis at Tamahi at around 5 pm....
6+ Above Allison at dark.
The whole river has a milky green colour, some areas are obviously worse than others
Right now in Chilliwack it is cloudy and warm, forescast for tomorrow is sunny and warm again.
Go out and have fun, tight lines  ;)

Finally after three years of going after these things I hooked into one today!I was down at peach road and had the fight of a life time with a 16 pound hatchery steelhead.I thought it was good as gone once I seen how big it was thinking my 8 pound leader wasn't going to holed up, then after the two times it made a run for the log jam a few feet above meI figured it was fate that I was going to loose it But  finally after what felt like forever he tired out and let me pull him on shore (with a little help from my father). It was an exilaratingexpereince all the better to have been able to share it with my father , a vetren steelheader who had to remined me his largest was 18 pounds.  I always said I would give up steelhead fishing after I caught one and got the picture, but the water conditions are looking good and the weather is supposed to be nice this weekend sooo..

Congrats Fishtracker for your 1st steelhead - a beast of a steelie, and the memorable fight with a light leader. You are a bit lucky to land it but Peach area should be ok. I have hooked a 20+ in rapids on 12 lb leader and it was a miracle to ever land a beast. Quit after fighting your 1st beastly steelie? You must be kidding... ;D  Anyways, great job and congrats. Welcome to the die-hard steelheader world.  :)

HOOK with the stability of the clay banks of late... if you see a rise, I would be assuming it is brown or white with clay.

ED i havent looked this year but heard the slide at Ranger wasnt in the river anymore, any truth to that? wondering because that would mean that above Allison should stay cleaner then below with water rising.

HOOK.
The Ranger run slide is still in the river.
The river now splits 2 ways just above the slide, I would say a 60-40 split, the 60 being the water flowing into the slide.
Yes I have found that mostly (this year) after a jump on the graph the upper is fishable the day after, with the lower fishable 2 days after.
The last 4 or 5 days there has been a jump everyday so I would assume the river has not had the chance to settle down at all.

Man, your so lucky to live that close to the vedder...take advantage of it.
You must know it well...

Wish I could get out there and fish more than once or twice a year.

You should get your guide license or at least take folks out for an under the table fee ;D

All the best,

Steve

Funny thing, people have been telling me to do that alot lately  ;D
I live on the river 300 days a year since I also live only 10 mins (walking) from Peach.
Problem with guiding is you are under alot of pressure to get people into fish, and it becomes more work than fishing and takes the fun away.
I took a handful of people out this year for free (a couple from the US) and felt pressured to get them into something every time, thankfully we did.

River has come down a fair bit the last few days and the temp is staying (relatively) low compatred to when it was rising.
Ill run out and take a look now... should have a report in 10 or so mins  ;D

River was fishable in the Lower this morning when I glanced at it around 8AM. Still cool so should be OK for the weekend. I only saw one rod on the water at the 4 spots I stopped at.

Water is 1-2 feet vis at Peach, 3 other anglers out when I was there.
Water continues to drop, even though it still warm.
Great time to get out and enjoy the sun  ;)

Did not see anyone out when I was looking at it. The Lickman parking lot was empty except for Dave and his dog.

Can anyone please give me a report on the water clarity for the lower canal area of the Vedder? I am mainly concerned about the mouth where it dumps into the Fraser. Has anyone been fishing the mouth area?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses

If you look at the hydrometric chart for the Vedder, you'll se that the river is very high, which points to the fact that it must also be quite murky. Ever since the claybank slides, the Vedder becomes murky as soon as the water gets above 2 m at the crossing.
Plus, it's freshet time, which aggravates the situation. Time to hit the lakes.  ;)

I miss the day's when the river was at 2-3 feet of vis when the graph was at the 2.3-2.4 which in my mind was perfect conditions. Last year anything under 2.2 meant low and clear with trapped fish. This year was VERY low water. Take some time comparing water levels from years past when the water seemed very low and clear but it was still much higher then this year.

this year opened up new water in the low conditions, but demolished the runs that i was used to. Early on with the high water we found some awsome spots off to the sides of the main flow, and was quite successful in them, but as the levels dropped the spots were erased and new runs and pockets formed. Fortunately though, the clarity stayed at about 2-4ft in the areas i fished, and i think it helped with making the fish feel secure, even though the water was low.

as a side not, only 7 months and 26 days to go!  ;D

congrats to all that connected this season, and good luck to those who didn't, may the days of cold where i'm covered in 5 layers of clothing and wearing 3 pairs of socks come quickly.

Water colored today in the canal area. The mergansers by the dozens were busy feeding on the salmon fry and the steelhead smolts.

River now in full freshet mode and very silty but I did see two anglers flicking the fly this afternoon, above the Hydro Bridge.
