« on: May 23, 2006, 01:53:21 AM »

Hi, I'm thinking of fly fishing for herring.  Anyone can suggest what fly pattern to use?

Thank you

I doubt you have to go down to such a small hook for them. Years ago I was able to get them on a tiny dick nite spoon when a school swam by.

Never fished for them myself but I do remember the jigs that Army & Navy use to sell. They had a stand of red yarn attached to each hook. So I would think trying some San Jaun Worms is size 18 to 24 would be a good start.

Hahaha you guys are missing the point.  Size 200 hooks?  come on, it was a joke...  Copepods are TINY TINY TINY little things, thats what herring eat for about 80% of their diet, the rest is even smaller stuff.  Bwi Bwi, the reason herring have a large mouth is because they filter feed for microscopic organisms, not to take "bites"....you could FIT a 2/0 in there, but doesnt mean they wont shy from it.

Haha ya if you could tie that small.  Try it out though, you never know.  Youd probably have better luck with some sort of attractor.

Hey BwiBwi now you know why I named that proto type Coho pattern Bite Me. Most of the people who saw it said it wouldn't work but it worked better than I expected, you proved that. So give it your best shot buddy it's the inovators that make things happen.

Herring jigs work well, so I don't see why a fly tied on a size 10 wouldn't work.  Check out the stuff that Radiant Lures makes:

I've used these rigs before and have had success.
