Low abundance is expected.

I have been told that retention closure of chum salmon in Lower Fraser tributaries (Stave, Harrison, Chilliwack, Chehalis, Nicomen, etc) will begin tomorrow. A fishery notice should be available later today.

Thank you Rodney. It's very kind of you to post this on a thread of its own. What a time saver!

Chum salmon retention closure has been changed to fishing closure, which now includes targeting, catching and releasing them.

Coho is open correct?
Coho is still open, but the intention to hook chum based apon targetting them as a species is now closed.

Doesn't specify float fishing but just fishing for chum in general. It's closed.

No surprise after years of roe harvesting from commercial fishing.

If that is how you target coho then give-er, I find floating roe to be much more effective and a friend has killed it on those soft BnR beads for coho.

how to catch coho not chum in Vedder river when coho is still open?

Avoid float fishing jigs, fly fishing with pink, purple and chartreuse flies and using techniques that can floss fish. Bycatch will still happen from time to time but these are the ways people actively fish FOR chum.
-
Agree with Colin purple and/or chartreuse when fly fishing definitely makes a difference. For me pink not so much.
-
I went for a walk along Peach Creek (between Peach Road and Lickman Road) this afternoon, and there were at least ten times more chum salmon digging redds in it compared to a week ago right before the river came up.
