Zero Yelloweye retention - is that new this year? Is it likely to be opened later in the year?
-
Yes it is new, no it won't open later in the year.

"Rockfish - Anglers in vessels shall immediately return all rockfish that are not being retained to the water and to a similar depth from which they were caught by use of an inverted weighted barbless hook or other purpose-built descender device"
Any idea for a setup for this?
-
I think they are called decenders...

Here are some devices: https://www.sportfishingmag.com/fish-descender-devices-release-fishing#page-12
I have one like the Shelton one. This is all going to make Ling cod fishing tougher and the kids will be crushed. I fish in low fishing-pressure area, its sad to see another fishery close.

There was a DFO rockfish conservation booth at this year's outdoor show in Abbotsford. They were giving out free SeaQualizer descenders to anyone willing to fill out a 2 minute questionnaire about their fishing habits. Pretty good deal, especially as they're required kit 8)
Check out this masterful rap video about the importance of descending your rockfish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c0CN_1veT0
Bananas, I'm sure your kids will be fine. Just dedicate a crappy/broken rod for descending and put the most quarrelsome child on descending duty ;D

Hard to watch and understand what they're trying to say with rap.

Ha ha! I am sure that they could still argue over that!
Okay - anyone got any great tips on making ling fishing more "selective" - so as to avoid the Yelloweye altogether?

Instead of staying in a spot after catching a few yelloweye and keep pounding on them you just move on to another spot.

Fish for lingcod in shallower spots where big yelloweyes are usually not present, and use big swimbaits like the Gibbs Delta Power Paddles. That's how we usually avoid getting rockfish while targeting lingcod.

Thanks Rod - I'll have a watch of that this evening. Shallower may be hard where I fish, but every little helps. :)
