sturgeon on fly?
« on: September 30, 2004, 12:39:31 PM »

Hey everyone, I wanted to know if anyone has ever heard of fly fishing for sturgeon.  I know it sounds a bit odd, but you never know, maybe someone has done it somewhere  8)

Cheers,

Jon

I recall reading an article in STS about flyfishing for sturgeons several months back.

Make sur you have 2 days of supplies and back up gas for chasing then, a couple of weeks ago my son caught one using 20-25 lb test and we were 2 1/2 hours and 2.9 miles down river by the time we beached him (just under 6ft)!!

I've found the article. It's the June-July 2001 edition of Salmon, Trout Steelheader.

So did you catch it on a fly or what?

Yo FA, what fly were they using?  Was there scent added?

Thanks for the info.

Here are the particulars:

Fast sinking TS 750 Teeny line

Fly tied on VMC 780 sturgeon hook. Fly consisted of combination of chenille, marabou and various feathers (no recipe given)

30 lb backing, five feet of 20 pound test leader and Pro Cure shrimp scent to scent the fly

In my fly rod reference materials, under big game, I have a photo of an angler with a 250 Sturgeon caught in the Caspian Sea. Doesn't mention the fly, rod was 12W with 20lb leader and deepwater express.

Well, caspian sea is on my list.  I have decided that I will try to go out and fish exotic locations at least once in a while.  Right now, I have to go and invest my pay check into lottery tickets though.   ;)  Thanks for all the info
