Just wondering when the chum start to arrive in the Vedder, Squamish and Stave? I noticed they are appearing in the local Fraser test fishery so it should not be too long.

I fish the stave tons, Last year I was catching multiple chums and some coho starting on sept 22nd. By the first week of october they will be in there thick, I dont mind lots but it makes it hard for me to target coho.

The chum in the Stave are not edible IMO. If you get them around the mouth of the Stave you can get a few clean ones but the ones any further than the trailer park are all colored.

Gonna have to disagree on ya here eddie. I fish the stave proboly10 times in sept, oct,. I Find Schools of clean chum will come in, For instance Last year on oct 6th. I landed 6 clean doe chums all with sealice on them within the span on 45 mins. And The stave is a short river, So if your getting clean ones at the mouth they will be clean a little ways up also. Not bad roe kid. That's one of the cleanest chum I've seen in the valley. A great system to try is the Squamish. The chum will be chrome silver if one's timing is just right... ;).

Yes , you can get some super clean ones in the squamish, There a Blast on the fly!

true those chum are very clean ;)...but your fishing in the ocean! that doesnt count ;D

Well I sure hope they are that clean in the ocean :)!. I thought were talking about rivers.

Ya they are from Browns Bay at the Derby last year, just having some fun with you buddy. Those ocean chum fight and I mean FIGHT!! I'll be going to the squamish a few times this year as they are a ton of fun on the fly.

im looking forward to hitting the local rivers and squamish for some freash chums on the fly in the next couple months 8)

Flyfishing the Squamish is one of my favorite types of fishing! The fish are very fresh, and the water is perfect for drifting the fly. It's not uncommon to hook over 30 chum in one day. I actually start to get worried about all that pressure on my rod! My arms tend to get sore as well! And those fish fight hard - quite different from those Vedder or Chehalis chums. There's also the chance to hook a coho as well.
The Squamish pinks are also excellent sportfish. They too are chrome bright and fight very hard - especially when they get into the current. There's also the chance to hook a spring and they are absolutely chrome silver when they come in.
Last year, it seemed that early to mid October was the best time to get chrome chums. I went in late October and only hooked coloured fish. I know I missed it by just a week. Even though the fish were coloured, they were still in much better shape that those you would find the Fraser Valley.

They must turn color immediately after hitting the Fraser water. Are they any good for eating out of the Vedder?

I think it would be only a 1 or 2 day trek from river mouth to Vedder. How can they turn gross so quickly?
