i am interested in targeting carp on a fly rod and don't know any spots or flys. were can you find carp and what flys to use thanks in advance.

Lafarge Lake has a tone of carp. You have to walk around the lake to locate them tho. I have caught 90% of my carp on black micro-leeches and green leeches. Bread flies that float on the surface are very good if the fish are aggressive.

Carp can be very difficult to catch on the fly. I think this is why they have been nicknamed " freshwater bonefish " because of the stealth you need to stalk them, cast ahead of them and then the patience to wait until they just pick up your fly. Of course there is times when they wont be hard at all but i doubt this is a regular occurance.


I would use something in Black, Green (darker), Maroon or a Darker Brown and weight it so you can get it on the bottom in front of FEEDING fish not the ones just swimming around. The trick is the strip set for setting the hook as oppose to just lifting the rod like we all do for trout, salmon, steelhead.

Also when a carp starts following your fly start stripping faster

--maybe try strike indicator and chironomid.. going to try it on skaha.
--lots of carp cruise the many shallow flats and reed patches along the shores.

--or cast fly.. micro leach and let sink to the bottom them move slightly as carp approaches. I find the carp sensitive to any splash or movement and just veer away without a take. I'm thinking need the patience of a chironomid fisher and subtle movement to attract them.
--I have tried casting in front of moving fish but they always dart to the side and keep going rather than turn like a trout.

--kinda cheating for some fly fishers but scent on the fly would likely help.
--I'm going to give carp and bass a serious test with the fly this year.. have some experienced fly guys coming to try and figure this out.

I got insta snapped two casts in a row one time blind casting with a sparse green damsel (6 lb flourocarbon might be too light). 
also a little tip...before you use your fly gently rub it in the water with some weeds or mud to get rid of any human scent.

Damn, yes it does but it's at least 3 or 4km. I guess i'll have to taste the water next time to see if its salty there

Theres a whole article about fly fishing carp in the May/july issue of canadian fly fisher. Try to get a back issue, as it has many good tips on when and how etc.
