Size of Chinook
« on: October 18, 2009, 05:27:40 PM »

What is the biggest chinook ever caught on the Vedder?
What is the biggest chinook you ever caught on the Vedder?
Anyone has any information on this?

What I'm wondering is what the size trend is for the past 20 years.
Are the fish getting bigger or smaller?
General trend is that all the big fish (trophy) are getting smaller and smaller due to over fishing but I'm curious about hatchery systems.

Any stats out there?

the fish were bigger on average this year then they have been for many years. 10yrs ago i got a 60lber and a girl had an 84lb the day before. That year there was a rediculous amount of giant chinook in the Vedder  :o the day i got my monster the smallest fish pulled out that day was i think around the 40lb mark (where i was on the river at least) biggest was mine (that day)

this year i saw many fish over 30 & 40lbs and not many under 20lbs. Last year my biggest was around 40lb and before October  ;D

I actually like it when they average size is around 15-20lbs because the fish dont beat up your gear as much and they dont take so long to bring in.

Mine is probably a 40+ pounder hooked on the fly - it was a dark buck and was quickly released.  I'm really not sure of the weight - but another guy retained a fish that weighed in at 44 lbs.  I saw him the next week and he said that my fish was bigger than his - so I going with 40+ to be conservative.  I do have a photo - but it's not in electronic format.  We still used film cameras back then if you can believe it!!!

This year I saw a huge hawg landed by Ivan.  I posted it on the fish porn thread so take a look... ;).

I caught and released a 52" fish from the Vedder a few years back.  I have seen many bigger fish caught and released in the river.

90+ lbs, however, is Kenai type numbers.  Don't know if I've ever seen that kind of stock in the Vedder.  Not that it couldn't happen, but I think they would have to start managing the river to propagate this kind of size.

Have you guys seen the 120lb that I caught and released a few days ago in the lower river? I posted the pic in the fish porn thread.

By the way, I've doubled my body weight last month by going on a strict pink salmon diet.

yes thats the fish Crazy. the pic doesnt do that fish justice trust me i was having a realy bit** holding it up for the pic. That fish was so thick i couldnt even turn her in the water. I had to go down river to get her to turn her head. havent tagged into anything that large or strong since and i have caught several 40lb range fish since and have no trouble moving those fish. That fish also took over an hour to land because of its sheer mass and me not being able to get her to fight enough to tire her out quicker. I wish back then i took measurements but i didnt, I did toss it on a scale that topped at 60 and it topped out that scale. I weighed it after cleaned at it was still 48lbs empty with just over 10lbs of roe because i weighed it also LOL the guy with that scale (digital) was sure happy for all that roe  :o
