I am saving to buy a sage or gloomis pin rod.Have read many postings on various sites but am still confused as to the actual meanings of the designations.Can someone explain them? For instance what do the numerals in 3116 3106mb 2109 or gl2 gl3 designate?The sage website has not been any help.Or is this a case of if you have to ask you can't afford it?
I'm leaning toward a medium action 10ft 6in.Lighter line wt say 10-15 lb.Any info would be appreciated.

Loomis STR 1143 = 114" (9'6") 3 power STR is designated steelhead rod
Loomis STR 1263 = 126" (10' 6") 3 power
Loomis STR 1265 = 126" (10' 6") 5 power
Loomis STR 1363 = 136" (11' 4") 3 power
Loomis SAR 1265 = 126" (10' 6") 5 power SAR is designated Salmon rod

on the sages blanks will say 3106b, 3106lb, 3113mb, 3113lb
lb= light blank, mb= medium blank

Factory centerpin rods from sage are designated CP3106L or CP3113M
Sage gear rods are pricy, about 50 to 70 % more than equivalent rods from Loomis or Lamiglas but the fit and finish are second to none. Just compare the cork and guides to say a Dave Vedder X106 MC Lamiglas rod and you can see the difference. I use rods from all three manufacturers and like them all but I must say my favorites are my Sages.

I dont believe the old sage blanks (brown in color) differentiate between casting or pin...in the new series, pin and casting rods are constructed differently and hence are marked accordingly: CP for centre pin and CT for Casting.
If someone were to buy a rod with simply a "B" on it, that means it was sold as a blank and not a factory rod.
As well, this year sage has minimised the variety of rods for several series. As an example the 3113 no longer comes in a lb of mb - while the CT and the CP have different line ratings and the CP has a softer tip, they are more or less the same blank.
I am ordering a bunch of blanks from a dealer down south so I have spent time on the phone with him and sage techs discussing the new line up.

Hey Gooey, I tried the new 290 and 296. I like them enough to buy one but only if it is longer. Do you know if there are any plans to make those blanks longer in length like 10'6"? Thanks

Isn't that what the 2106 is?

While I havent fished a 2106 or 3106, I have fished the 290.
It felt like a very fast blank to me and I dont think the 2106 is as fast blank. As well, the new series of sages (2006 models) fish differently that their corosponding predicesors I am told (by another fisherman...not sage).
I liked the 290 as well, in fact I plan to build 2 up for spinning applications...should be awesome!

I compared my 3106 factory rod to my friend's 3106 custom built (brown blank) and found them to be a bit different as well (despite sage saying that the blanks are identical except for color) Not sure why there is a difference, could it be how the rod was built, i.e. type and number of guides etc...

I know a blank "losens" up once you put the guides on it...maybe number of guide (which could differ from a CP to a casting) could change a rods feel...amout of epoxy used, weight of the guides...these are all things that could change the feel of a rod.
Oh and norm, I have no idea if the will take the 290/296 series and extend it to 10'6...my guess is no.
