Cradles distribute the weight evenly and I have yet to see one with uneven and jagged stones attached.
It's a precaution.
A knowledgeable person my be able to this with minimal endangerment however a new Yahoo who saw this on the internet with no education in the process would probably contribute some damage and then it carries on.

I reported the same person, James Hope, to the same conservation officer in February of 2011. James had been posting pictures of himself with sturgeon online, which I screen captured as proof, and sent to Mr. Jacobi. I still have the photos:
