Care of fish on the river
« on: September 01, 2005, 06:41:39 PM »

What are some of the better ways to preserve your catch on  the river? Today I caught  a  couple of pinks on the fly at Peg Leg.  I had a cooler in my truck but it was some distance away.  I kept the fish in a wet burlap bag until I was ready to go. Is there something that is a little more high tech? You can't  always have the cooler near by.

First and foremost bleed your fish. Time permitting also clean your fish and put in the shade. Wet a couple of newspaper and cover your fish. That should keep your fish in good shape.

Bleeding your fish means instead of  bonking it,, cut through or rip out the gills.  the fish will pump out the blood out of its system,,leaving a better quality meat.  Animal rights activists won't like this method though. :-[   :'(

If you're keeping the roe, bleeding the fish will result in better quality eggs.

make sure to keep your catch in free flowing water and totally submerged.

Sorry for being ignorant here, but do most people pack away the discarded guts and gills or is it okay to leave them in the water? Is it best to take them back with you?  Thanks

Gills and guts go back into the river, sturgeon gotta eat somethin  ;)

On the topic of peg leg, for those of you going there make sure you bring some sort of fish retaining device as the waves from all the boat traffic have washed more than one fish back into the river. I've seen everything from burlap sacks with rocks to stringers to tire irons inbedded in the gravel.

Throw them back into the river. Provides nutrients to the river.

Do NOT leave your fish sitting in the water.   If it sits in the water, the osmotic pressure will slowly waterlog your fish.

The Burlap bag on the shore, wet as necessary, is probably the BEST technique if you don't have a cooler full of ice.

Also - DON'T use a garbage bag.  They are lined with chemicals to help keep odours down.  These chemicals will rub off on your fish :(
Cheers.
