I think the biggest advantage with them is the amount of water you cover, just like spey fishing kind of. Tricky part is finding what action the fish like, Vedder fish seem to like the spoon bounced off the bottom for some reason or on the retrieve. Stamp/island fish from what I'v found like it on the swing or jigged, so make sure you experiment a little.Quote
all steelhead will take a spoon on the swing vedder or not! u shouldn't have to bounce the spoon on the bottom. while its okay to touch bottom once in a while to make sure your in the zone accidentally, doing this on purpose will result in an unnecessary loss of spoons. you likely get the fish on the bottom or retrieve because of the water you fish(upper river) not the fishes preference . its okay to cast on an angle downstream or upstream to keep action in the spoon and keep it near bottom. you shouldn't have to jig spoons unless your in pocket water fishing soupy water or fishing guts on cutbanks that require short drifts. all techniques are usefull in covering the maximum amount of water. not saying your wrong but your experience on vedder steelheads preferences with the spoon comes from a smaller area(tamahi-thurston) not the whole river.

I do realize this. Like I said it is just what I have found. I went through the runs swinging spoons first, then tried bouncing them and on tow occasions after nothing the first go I got fish the first cast through while rolling the spoon. Could have easily been coincidence, but like I said never hurts to experiment. I've gotten pretty good at not losing spoons finally, generally lose 1 every 1 or 2 trips so it isn't too bad any more. I find that as long as I keep the line tight and the spoon kicking I don't get snagged even if I'm bumping bottom a little bit. When I do tap bottom I either start reeling until I'm just above and keep that reeling pace, or I just adjust the rod tip height. And you're super right about jigging it in pockets. I wouldn't doubt the lower river would be much like the stamp and great for swinging, just haven't hit any down there yet... but then again only made 6 trips back home.
Thanks for the tips!
oh geez. rocks and gloves, here we go... :o
I dare you to try holding a tidal caught sturgeon with no gloves :o
I dare you to try holding a tidal caught sturgeon with no gloves :oYup, learnt that the hard way, saw that it was a 6fter then took the gloves off to maneuver and get the hook out.

Gawd damn!!! DMW, You're a straight slayer! I'm the Wild Steelie man. Still no hatches for me. I let a small hatch go and that' s about it in 8 trips i was into 5 fish.Lol..Don't know about that. I haven't hit to many hatch lately. Seems to be a lot more wild in the system now than there were a couple weeks ago. Well that and I think I let go 4 of the last 5 hatchery. Don't want to fill my license up just yet. Now watch, now that I said that I won't touch another one.. Lol :D
Nice fish, falls pool?
Was a decent day... had some of these beauties to hand...Everyday! What a photo! Beauty!!!

I talked calmly to the girls
i dont think camera skills have anything to do with. Ive only seen played out fish stay still
Here is one from yesterday that did not turn out very good, was the best shot of 4 frames.
Hue-nut has also mentioned more than once he takes most his pics with his iphone. I know from owning one that it only takes a couple seconds to get the camera up and ready, at least you can do the effects later on though ;D still no idea how he gets the fish to co-operate
I also have the same problem with every fish i catch, the problem of not being able to get them calm while not holding their tail or at least a hand across the belly to calm them. I also think its been a few years since i even got a pic of a wild steelhead because im usually to busy admiring them as i remove the hook and revive and release them to continue their journey ;D ;D ;D ;D
hatchery ones of course are easy to take pictures of because they are stone cold dead !!! LOL
Took time off from installing laminate flooring for a friend to do a little fishing this morning. I had started the day fishing a small run up above Allison Canyon. Despite the water clarity being terrific I was not rewarded with any hits as I drifted a variety of purple and pink leeches under a strike indicator before switching to a sinking tip to swing through the tail end of the run. I headed downriver to another nice run in the mid river section and swung away with my 8 weight single handed Sage, but lost my versa tip on a hang up mid river. Discouraged I headed down the river as the rain started to really come down. I was contemplating packing it in for the day when I noticed there were no cars parked at my lower river run. I parked and walked down to the river and began swinging a pink squidro fly at the top of the run. Since I no longer had my versa tip on, I was relying solely on my clear camo sink tip to get the weighted fly down. I proceeded to cast and swing and step down the run and was finally rewarded with a headshake as the fly reached the middle of the run. I set the hook and battled this 14 pound hatchery buck to the beach for my first steelhead of the season.

Was it a wild buck? A big buck was landed yesterday around 3pm at the vedder. I know the guy and he slays steelhead everyday. He measured the fish and it was 43.5". He fought it for almost 45 mins and it had 3 hooks in the mouth when he landed it. It was more like a 23 pounder and definitely not a 28 though...was it bullet chrome and mine had no hook marks on it

Hey Everyday, nice shot, what kind of camera are you using, it looks sharp.
I was feeling a little burnt out from steelheading .. well driving an hour and a half each way, then driving some more and getting skunked anyway .. but glad I decided to hit "one more run". He put up a great fight, and I got some much needed experience on landing in a specific area/turning a strong fish on a steep bank/bushes, and more importantly releasing a wild fish. He never left the water, released in under 10 seconds.

Aye, there be some fine lake bound mykiss being shown here me hearties. But I no canna wonder why anyone would pose with a squawker fish? Blimey, they be a black spot on any angler's card indeed!Dude you crack me up!
Very nice TimL! :) I was actually wandering around there today (not fishing, just with a camera) after reading your introduction. ;) I walked all the way down to Maple Bay to see if there are potential spots away from the crowd. The pier doesn't seem that bad. Plenty of users but the family-oriented atmosphere is quite nice, everyone seemed to be obeying the regulations by checking each crab. I'll have to wet a line there soon. :)Thanks! When were you there today? The above fish were caught sometime around 12:30-1:15 during flood tide..lingered on the beach till about 2:15 or so before moving to the pier- I was casting off the high/lookout point. Didn't catch much out there-just a sanddab and a sculpin.. at that time the tide was already turning slack and the action was winding down.
Sorry..no salmonids in this one.. just the results from a shore fishing trip off BelcarraThose fish must have been delicious!
17 inch (43 cm) starry flounder caught off the beach, just south of the crabbing dock...the biggest specimen I've seen out here so far!

The 2 keepers for the day- the top one is a rock sole (~12 inches), caught quite regularly from shore during an incoming tide. Also caught and released lots of staghorn sculpins and 1 speckled sanddab.

Great fish love fishing with my daughter.
Just one thought have you given life jacket any consideration.
Great fish love fishing with my daughter.Usually do if it is just me there. However I had my wife with me and we were keeping a good close eye on them, they don't venture far (within arms reach). Thanks for the concern though.

forget the tether on your rod, lifejacket AND a tether on those kids !!!
lifejacket does no good if they fall in and get swept out of reach in a matter of seconds. what do you do then ?? watch them float away screaming, jump in after them so they can watch a parent drown (assuming your not wearing a pfd) ??
I have not had my son on the river with me other than where its shallow for quite a ways from dry land and even then he is normally in his pfd OR he never goes deeper than his kness because i stay back shallow enough he can stand with me if he wants. taking your own life in your hands is your decision but dont risk your kids thinking your ok, worst things normally happen before you even have a chance to react.
nice sturgeon ;D
HOOK - if my sons are near moving water thats deep quickly they will be in pfd's and tethered to my waist (not my waist belt). they might hate it but at least they wont vanish suddenly

::) Here we go.
American fish. They can use or abuse them however they want.
How do you know that's a American fish?
How do you know that's a American fish?
The only thing I could really see wrong might be the gloves. Other than that it looks good, knot free net, water dripping from the fish to indicate it hasn't been out of the water forever and it's being held correctly (no fingers in gill plates). The State of Washington actually has regulations on some rivers where wild steelhead are not allowed to leave the water, so I'd say they're more strict in regards to fish handling. That is something I think we should adopt up here but have it say "Any fish that is not going to be retained must not leave the water."The gloves have leather palms and leave the slime on the fish. Rubber net and the fish stays in the water and in the net until the camera is ready. One pic and then released. 10 seconds out of the water. Idaho Clearwater fish.

I don't want to get in the middle of it but you should dunk your bare hands in the water before you handle a fish, as far as rocks go it doesn't matter if they're wet or dry, always bad.
x2. Wet your hands, try to keep the fish in the water as long as possible, snap the shot quickly, send it back on it's way. Never bring it on the rocks. Take a look at every days shot, that's how it's done.
Every Day's fish looks like it's technically touching rocks too by how much of the body is out of water but it's probably barely touching. I'd give Every Day 98% perfect release and Hugo 80% perfect release.
