Title: Why buy Native Salmon...
Post by: DragonSpeed on August 24, 2011, 07:37:17 PM
When you can steal it from a rec fisherman's cooler???!?!?!?

Mrs D and I caught 4 nice sox last night and slept in the truck near the bar.  Then we were at it around 0700 this morning after having tossed the cooler into the back of the truck (with a canopy - albeit not locked)

We fished hard today and came up from the river at 1500 with a few to add to yesterday's fish.    I got to the truck, opened up the cooler and the first words out of my mouth were: "Son of a B*tch!"

Some lowlife STOLE my salmon.  Left the cooler, left all the ice.  Just took the salmon.

Wow.  Anyone else ever had this happen?

I wish.  And would have been good to see the remains of some fish thief next to some tracks.

The cooler had BOTH latches unlatched, opened, had the fish taken out, and then closed, as was the canopy on the truck.

D@mn bears are getting pretty smart if it was bears.

You should marinade another sock with laxatives and put it back into that same cooler and go fishing again  ;D

Obviously there is no shortage of meat-hungry people in the valley. Lats year a young chap stole my buddy's fresh caught red spring when we were cleaning up some garbage off the shore. We just saw him running to the back of the bushes with the fish in his hand. Too late to run after him as it was a pretty steep area to climb up! :-\

Personally, I think that if someone is so desperate for a fish that they need to resort to stealing it, then they obviously need it more than I do. Makes me grateful for being raised on Sockeyes and having the morals my mom put into me, and sad that someone is either in a desperate enough situation to need food that badly, or just dumb enough to get a good laugh.

Yep, it happened to me too last year in the same area.
I had on a spring and my buddy was helping me walking it down and then landing it, and when we went back to our spot, the brown potato bag was gone with our socks. Next week-end, I found the potato bag on the beach, socks gone.
This kind of thing is pretty low, IMHO. I can't imagine the low life that would do something like this. I AM STILL GROWLY OVER THAT EXPERIENCE. >:( >:( >:( >:(

While it might not bring you any relief, at least after hearing these stories i will be more cautious about this happening to me so i thank you for informing me that this would happen. I would have never believed it if so many people didnt confirm that this happens. I only prey that if someone tries it to me, i am fortunate enough to catch them in the act to "discuss" it with them.

When you fish with the monkeys, expect that your peanuts may be stolen.  It's a sad commentary on that particular fishery, IMO.

DragonSpeed,
The only thing that surprises me in your post is that you left your canopy unlocked  :o Did you forget what part of the world you were in?  ;)  Don't get me wrong, this is lower than low but it really doesn't surprise me with everything we've been hearing these days.

You basically baited them by leaving something valuable in an unlocked part of your vehicle. It's almost like leaving your rod in the front seat of your vehicle and leaving the windows down..................and then saying "I can't believe someone stole my rod".

Lock everything up people, remove anything of value from your vehicle and at leats put it out of site. This has been going on for years. It's unfortunate that we have to do this but let's be honest here, there's thieves among us everywhere  :(

FISH.  That's all. FISH.

I just didn't see the net intrinisic value of 4 dead fish to the average thief.  Let's face it most thieves aren't stealing to put something tasty on the BBQ, they are stealing so that they can support a habit.

I suppose next weekend, I'll lock the canopy, even with an empty cooler.  Next time it'll be the cooler otherwise.

Well you said it right..........."why buy native salmon when you can get some from a cooler". Chances are these are people that either didn't get their quota or they are really greedy and wanted more. Unfortunate either way  :-\

I would not lock it as they will most likely smash the window. Then you will be with no fish and a lighter wallet to pay the deductable

I've witness people walking away with other people's landing nets while they're chasing their salmon downstream.

Crazy...never had fish stolen from a campsite cooler but I've lost a few bottles of whiskey and rum over the last few years.

Sad, for sure; though it would p!ss me off if it was my fish that were stolen.

after hearing these stories i will be more cautious about this happening to me ...

No doubt! I was paranoid about people stealing my fish the first time I fished Scale, but after a couple of trips there I told myself to: "relax, everyone here's cool, no one's going steal your fish!" Sounds like I might have to start roping my catch to my waders rather than leaving it in a rock pool! The last thing I need is to catch someone in the act and get a record for assault :p

Yeah, it's frustrating to watch/hear about that fishery sometimes, it seems to bring out the worst in people (or, it brings out the worst people, lol).  If it remains an open fishery, I would hope that more and more people take up the call to self-regulate and look out for the resource, as so many on this forum try and do!

I struggle with that every salmon season.... I don't bb for sockeye, but  I like to fish the vedder  and the behavior is pretty shocking at times. The choice is to get involved and try to educate people, which almost always turns into a confrontation, or to look the other way, in which case I feel guilty. My solution is to hike away from the idiots, or when they can't be avoided, to educate / confront them, even if it ruins my day :)

There's got to be a lot more of us (ethical fishers) than them (woefully ignorant or knowingly unethical fishers) so if we keep asserting ourselves, maybe it will get better :)

It doesnt look like this fishery is going away anytime soon.
Many of us could see what this fishery would bring and it isnt just contained to the Fraser.
Lets face it.
A Monkey can even catch fish flossing.
No skill needed at all.

Would be nice to see the Alaskan model (or something similar) so this harvest could be separated from recreational fishing.

Each adult male (here might be each LICENSED adult male) resident of Alaska is entitled to X sockeye salmon.  No rule about how you must take them.  They run up the Kenai and dipnet off the front of the boat.  People get their X fish, it's not confused with rec fishing.

How do they catch them from shore? Launch a huge net to the middle of the river and drag every type of fish back?

I've seen effective dipnetting from shores before too.

I could get behind that in theory... does it really stipulate male??

In Illinois, they have separate seasons for the chinook snaggers and chinook anglers, in part because of frequent confrontations. At least they're honest- they call it snagging season, even in the regs :)

I heard there is another commercial opening the river tomorrow so im going to buy another 10 fish.
Even at $15.00 these things are a bargain when it comes to good eats and nutrition etc.
Ok Ok,those that know me better know its more about the good eats than nutrition. ;D
Will be trying out the new 23 Quart pressure cooker.
MMMMM lightly smoked and then canned Sockeye.  :o
