Title: Vedder Canal Closure
Post by: chris gadsden on January 31, 2011, 08:38:19 PM

From the City of Chilliwack.

The City is planning to carry out maintenance works to the Collinson drainage pump station located at the dyke in West Greendale. In order to facilitate the work, vehicle access to the West Dyke will be closed from Feb 7 until the 26. Fishing is still allowed as per normal fisheries openings. During this closure, it will be possible for pedestrians to access the dyke from Yale Road West however; it will only be possible to access part way down the dyke as the actual work zone will be completely fenced off for safety reasons.

I’ve also included some potential questions and answers that will be going on our website shortly at www.chilliwack.com/westdyke.

Please feel free to make this information available to anyone who may be affected by this closure to vehicle traffic.

 Questions about pump maintenance
Q. What work is being done?
A. The City is planning to carry out maintenance works to the Collinson drainage pump station located at
the dyke in West Greendale. The work will consist of removing, overhauling and replacing the two
pumps within the station. The work is scheduled such that only one pump will be out of service at a
time. There will be mobile pumping equipment brought to the site which will remain throughout the
works. This equipment will have 110% of the pumping capacity of the pump that has been removed.
Q. Why?
A. The pumps in the station were installed in 1972 and although they remain fully serviceable they are
showing some signs of wear. The objective of the work is to overhaul the pumps to maintain them in the
best operational condition possible.
Q. Why now?
A. The City is taking a proactive rather than a reactive approach to the planned maintenance in order to
ensure drainage integrity is maintained for the Greendale area. River levels are typically at their lowest
through February and March and the work will be completed well before rivers rise in response to the
2011 Fraser River freshet.
Q. How long is it expected to take?
A. The actual maintenance work is expected to take just over 2 weeks from February 10th to February
25th, 2011. To facilitate site preparation the area between Keith Wilson Road and Yale Road will be
closed to vehicle traffic from Monday February 7th to Saturday February 26th 2011.
Q. What happens if it takes longer than expected ?
A. Unless there are unforeseen circumstances the work will be completed as per the planned schedule.
If the length of the project is extended, than the mobile pumping equipment will remain on site and will
not be removed until the station is back to its normal operating condition.
Q. Why are we paying to repair old equipment when the Greendale Drainage Plan recommends an
increase in pump capacity?
A. The recommendation to increase pump capacity is included in our Comprehensive Municipal Plan
(CMP). The cost is significant and we are unable to do it without assistance from other levels of
government. The City has applied unsuccessfully for grant funding and will continue to do so until we
are successful. In the meantime the City will maintain the current equipment in good operational condition.
