good shore spots around the lower mainland for a beginner?

Hope everyone has had a chance to get fly fishing in lately!  I don't have access to a boat, pontoon or belly boat and am looking for good recommendations to fly fish from shore.  My preference would be a calm lake but any smaller streams I would be interested in.  Looking to avoid the Vedder or places that will be overcrowded, and perhaps not friendly to beginners  :)

Willing to drive > 2.5 hours from the Vancouver area ... any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Any were around manning park should be good. If you do go there are lots of mosquito's out!

Many on both sides of Burrard Inlet, and at Crescent Beach if you want to try saltwater fly fishing.

What species can you catch on the fly in these areas? I was spincasting with shrimp for shiner perch earlier this week but was wondering what opportunities lay with the fly, as I'm trying to get more work in with my rod. I have a 5wt though so catching shiner perch or other small species wouldn't be ideal for my setup.

Seymour River mouth, and Cates Park...
Supposedly good to great Pink fishing around this time.... Should be on fire next week and the following week.

Haven't heard of much in the way of pinks around cates this run, and last run (in 09) they were not staging at cates....

Cates hasn't been good at all this season as well as '09.  I found a link that reports on cates:

That's how I began, and honstly, you can flycast at all the local put-and-take stocked lakes, like Rice, Sasamat, Mike etc, but your options will open up immesureably if you get a float tube.

A basic belly boat is cheap these days, <$100 or less if you watch sales or the buy and sell on the forum, and it really is worth it.
