Title: Where do i go with my 3 wt?
Post by: Ssypark on April 03, 2012, 11:00:26 PM
Hey guys, Easter weekend is coming up and I'm trying to plan on where to go for cutthroat or bull trout.
I went last weekend to the Stave but got skunked. I just got a 3 wt and was wondering what rivers would be suitable (and productive) for it. Chehalis, Stave, Squamish, Pitt River etc? I'm not asking for exact locations but would like to know how I can end this long streak of catching nothing on my new rod. Also, what are you guys planning to do for this long weekend?

Thanks! :)

Maria Slough for Cutthroats and Rainbows. Watch for boils on the surface as this is where the cutties are feeding on fry/minnows. Using floating line and a 9-10' leader, throw fry/minnows patterns like rolled muddlers, mickey finns, epoxy minnows, etc.

Harrison river near Kilby, if the wind is not blowing too hard.

Careful with targeting bull trout on your 3wt, that could be a recipe for turning your 4-piece rod into a 6-piece.  lol

Should be a great match for most cutthroat though.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys!
Turned out to be a successful day at Maria Slough :) Caught a couple of cutties and rainbows.

It turned out that my wine/black coloured leeches to be more successful than the olive epoxy minnow patterns.

I noticed there were a lot of cutties surfacing and jumping around. \ would dry flies be viable at times like this?

I'm sure whoever said the Skagit means the Skagit when it opens July 1st until it closes at the end of October. a 3 weight, or even a faster 2 weight, is generally ideal for dry fly appilcations for the size of trout there.

If I go to the skagit I take my 5wt so I can  get the bulls on the way back down. Maybe a little overkill for the bows but well worth it
For the amount of bulls to be had.
