Title: proud dad
Post by: bentrod on April 19, 2008, 04:33:29 PM
I took the opportunity today to take my boys to a local juvenile pond today for a couple hours.  It was getting cold and my boys were getting ready to leave when one of their bobbers took a dive.  My 4-year old grabbed the rod and started reeling like there was no tomorrow.  It jumped at least 5 times and ran all over the lake.  My 7-year old grabbed the net and netted the 5-lb. triploid rainbow for him.

To make a long story short, my 4 year old won't stop grinning.  He is so excited and won't stop talking about the fish he caught.  I actually think the two brothers haven't fought at all this afternoon either.  Well worth the trip.  I'd forgoe catching anymore fish all year for a trip like that.

Rod,,,,,,,,, My son is 42 yrs old and we still fish together and talk a couple times a week about how we did together or seperate. He landed his first Steelhead ( landed) when he was 7 and enjoys the outdoors as much as I do today. He is still only the second best spoon fisherman in the world however. ..........UMP..........Jerry
I always fished with my dad too and keep those memories forever with me..........

Right on Bentrod! Nothing better than watching the kids catch fish and then listening to them tell EVERYONE about it.

I took my daughter to a local lake and could not believe how excited she was just to be there.  We only were able to fish about 3/4 of an hour and had no luck but still made me proud how into it she was.  That's all she's been talking about since and cant wait to get back.

Congrats on the outing!

Sounds like a great day. Teach your kids to fish and you will have partners for life!

It's nice to hear that kids are still enjoying the simple and pure things in life. I often find it hard to pry my children away from their xbox and internet games.   Things are are sure different than when I grew up fishing with my uncle. Thanks for the great story!

I would like to take my sons fishing to one of the lakes nearby like sasamat or buntzen. Has anyone heard anything about these lakes

CaptainZippy,

Buntzen has a small dock on the beach, but it get pretty crowded during the summer.  I've seen a few trout being caught at buntzen on the dock, but most are caught by float tubers.

Never been to Sasamat, but there's a very long floating dock across the lake that you can fish from.

Another option would be to go to Lafarge (nearby).  It's not as scenic, since you're in the middle of the city, but I've seen people catching fish from every part of the shore on that lake (this year especially, since they seem to be stocking it with crazy numbers every 2 weeks).

Went back out last Saturday.  Both boys caught many rainbows and cutties.  They're both getting pretty good and are having a blast.  I get choked up thinking that the memories we're making now are the ones they'll be telling their kids about when I'm an old man.  Makes me think of my Dad in a different way now.
