Title: winter striped perch
Post by: fish fear me on February 24, 2017, 01:28:46 PM
Wanted to give this fishery a try as I saw some reports from last year around this time of year. My plan is to head up to belcarra walk along admiralty point trail and try to find some rocky points and fish a bottom rig with a piece of shrimp on ultralight gear. Is this a good strategy for these fish or should I rethink? Thanks.

Sounds like a good plan to me. If they are there, they will bite!

Looks good though I prefer to go with a slightly heavier setup due to line abrasion on the rocks. The perch will be in schools inshore close to or around the rocks feeding on the life that grows on them...so if you get one, there will be more  :D..I will advise casting a little farther out on the sand and slowly retrieving it until you get bites. You will lose some tackle initially but as you start to figure out the bottom, you will know (roughly) where to cast to minimize hang ups.
As for typical size range, 8-10 inches is usual..the larger females (10-12 inches) seem to be more common in early-mid summer when they come inshore to give birth.
