DFO Fishery Notice
« on: May 07, 2006, 10:50:27 AM »

I was reading the DFO website and a May 1st notice regarding Spring Salmon limits, goes on to mention Sockeye, and how a recreational opening for Sockeye is "expected" to commence around the end of July!!
I thought that was a fairly bold statement considering what happened last year.
Nothing like getting things going early on here!!  ;D  ;D

"Expected" can mean anything when it comes to fishing opportunities.

The opening is predicted based on the run-timing of each sockeye run. Fishery managers expect the stocks that they wish to protect to move through by the end of July, so anglers can expect an opening as early as the end of July. However, like any in-season openings, changes do occur like what we observed last year due to unexpected late returns.

Why would we not be expecting another late return? :) AS that seemed to be the trend with more than one run last year!!

Because the ocean condition is unpredictable, maybe they'll be early. ;)

But yes, the likelihood of a delayed run is quite large. Just south of us, there is currently a great fear on very low and hopefully late returns of their spring chinook runs.

Up until last year it was always at or near the beginning of August. I was just kinda surprised that they would even mention Sockeye, when announcing Spring limits.
