speaking of soft mouths and the hooks popping. I had an incident this season at the beach where the pink took a mad dash for deeper water as soon as it saw shore and my line got caught around my reel. I clearly felt the hook pop out as the line didnt peel out but then I was on the fish again. after safely landing the doe, I found it was hooked in the mouth, then popped out and made a slash across the gill plate and once again punctured the gill plate. she was gently released afterwards.

maybe its not he soft mouth but how aggresive they are to the lure they are chasing. slow retrieve vs fast retrieve.
