my best producing flies are chironomids, i find the local stockies like their food sitting still.

Wooly buggers in Olive, black, brown, and spratley's in olive, black, red, are always worth trying. Micro leeches in black with some red tinsel and light brown can also be deadly just to name some favorites.    good luck

ok this is my absolute deadly fly and has been dubbed the Green Timbers Special by my friends because it always gets a hit or two (normally tons)

Tiemco 2499 SPBL size 14
Copper bead to match hook size
Red thread to tie with (i use 8/0 uni-thread) and to use as the redbutt
Black flashabou body
extra small red wire rib

I tie this half way onto the bend of the hook as to give it a curled profile and i think this is what helps to make the difference, also the introduction of the redbutt also helps.

I bought a few of these from M&Y but they did not have those modifications, they worked but nowhere nearly as much. this pattern is also deadly in the interior lakes fished near the bottom

Are you looking to fill the freezer or learn how to fish / enjoy your day out?!? Chironomid fishing is hardly the most rewarding way to catch (although definitely very productive).

I have the most fun fast stripping big streamers. The hits are really hard from these stockies.

I dont retain trout and when i do they are interior trout only. I enjoy chironie fishing because of its effectiveness and the fact that i can just sit and relax. I was at Lafarge today and landed 20+ using the exact pattern i stated, I also lost about that many due to the barbless nature of the hook and missed probably 3x that in strikes. all in all it was a great day and kept me from the stupidness that is the crowded Vedder  ;D

Oh and im not learning to fish LOL I have been fishing 30yrs and fly fishing has been 12yrs of that

Black Boobies on a fast-sinking line can be absolutely lethal when targeting freshly stocked trout. The trout often hit the fly during its descent or as soon as you begin the retrieve.

Keep in mind that hatchery raised trout tend to look towards the water's surface more than over-wintered or naturalized fish, as that is where the vast majority of their food comes from...

For me, the quality of a trout is not measured in pounds and inches, but rather by the journey and circumstances that allowed our paths to cross...
