Port Renfew or Ucluelet for Salmon
« on: April 19, 2010, 09:03:27 PM »

I am planning a trip to the island in July or early august.

Both places sound good.  I have fished out of ucluelet before with Canadian princess and it was great for the price,(too much work jigging all day) but looking for a guide boat with trolling and chance at some halibut.

I would like to go for Salmon and halibut in the same day.
My brother in law went to port renfew and had good luck.

Does anyone know the pro's and con's of the 2 places, and can someone recommend a good guide that can handle 4 guys comfortably, for a day out on the bank. I am looking at around $1000-$1200 a day for fishing prices..

I went with jolly rogers guides with 4 guys and we all limited out on halibut and coho plus two springs in the 20s the other boat we were with landed a 235 pnd hali it was the record for the marina that year. The water was relatively calm and not a far run to get to the halibut. It is regularily foggy but the guides are well equiped to handle this. This was renfrew. we stayed at the camp site in the bay,it has a beatiful long sandy beach and is very close to the marina. It is also close to a lot of other attractions ,the botonical gardens ,sombrio, the sanjaun river ,and there is a nice lake near by.Excellent for the whole family.I have only been to ucluelet once and we ran pretty far out to fish, couldnt find the halis but caught lots of small springs largest 18pnds the next day we got blown out and had to cancell due to weather a common occurance apparantly the camp site wasnt to family freindly ,no beach not much for the wife to do.This is just my experience the tides could turn and make any trip on the outside sour I would still take either of these trips in a heart beat.I have to mention I went to gold river in nootka sound with a freind last year and caught a 50pnd spring my tent leaked weather sucked got a flat tire and had boat problems but all I remember is that spring getting scooped in that net.

The beach in Port Renfrew is one of the nicest beaches in Canada.  Nowhere else can you drive to such a beautiful place.
