Chilliwack River, September 26th 2008

Started today in the lower river after having some good luck there a few days ago with a Coho and a few fresh springs.  This morning was a bit slower however, hooked into no coho and only a couple springs.  Never actually kept a chum before, but since it was all I seemed to be hooking today and the fish were all very fresh (covered in sea lice).... I decided to keep a smaller doe I caught.  Fish were all caught on fresh coho roe.

Not sure if I should bbq it up or if it would be best to just smoke. 



But anyways, the chum seem to be in a bit early this year.

I guess people can actually learn something from those Learn to Fish classes in Abby after all. ;D

Better than I did.  I was out there today as well.  Fished the channel above the railway bridge, Yarrow area, and canal closer to Hwy 1.  Only saw 1 Spring taken and heard of another. But...

When I got there it was still quite dark - could just make out the outline of the mountains against the sky.  It was just bright enough that I could see the water surface, so I decided to go ahead and fish.  FIRST CAST, as soon as my Stealth float hit the water a big hawk dove from the highest tree, grabbed my float and took off again.  The bird held the float for quite a while before letting go.
 
Pretty exciting for a few seconds

smoked chum are great.  But, if you want to bbq it, , it tastes pretty good with some butter, lemon and brown sugar.

Fished the Chilliwack last Friday. Fish were running through pretty quick in the upper river. Not biting much up there. Almost looked like they were in a hurry to get to the hatchery.
Fish were just starting to show up in the lower river. I was fishing off of Wilson road and landed one jack and one very colored spring hen. Lost 2 coho that decided they were race horses and took off like rockets up river. Had many more hook ups. Great day.
Also witnessed two guys obviously snagging chums. You can always tell when they come in sideways. Guys each kept one. As I tried to get closer to get a better ID, they took off. Guys like this ruin it for the rest of us.
Did get to talk to a guy and his son from New Mexico. Dad used to fish on the river when he was a teenager and lived in Spokane. Said he wanted his son to experience a true salmom fishery (I think he called it salmon heaven). Kid was 12 years old and was drowning in the waders his Dad bought him. It was funny to see him hook into a small jack spring and land it. Kid was jumping up and down on the gravel for 5 minutes. He even ran down river to high 5 me.
That made my day.
