Title: New to Coho fishing
Post by: fishfulangler on September 20, 2015, 12:39:40 PM
Hello everyone, I have fished for chum and pinks before but I would like to also fish for coho salmon. I think I am going to try the Stave river, probably around the place with the slow current. My questions are; When Should I go fishing here? What type of lures/bait should I use? Where else could I fish for coho? Anything else I should know before I go fishing for coho?

Thanks for your answers.  :)

Stave is a good place for coho along with the Vedder, Harrison, etc.
The toilet bowl on the stave is a popular spot for coho.
You can try casting spoons and spinners or float fish roe.
You can start fishing for coho now.

Welcome to the fun

Stave is great for chum and can be for coho as well, think mid Oct for good numbers, rain will be a trigger for coho.

Parking can be an issue, as can be crowds until you find a few better spots.

Spoons in the bigger water, spinners in the slack, twitched jigs everywhere and roe bar fished esp on the morning incoming tide all work well for me. Gibbs coho spoons #35, crocks in hammered brass fire stripe are good and small spinners like Mepps etc and Bent Rods jigs for twitching.

You can also fish Dewdney Slough, good place to toss lures.

Look for slow or still water. Coho like to hold in it, especially if its deep. Don't get stuck in one spot if you don't think there are any coho around, search out better water. They bite better when the water is a little colored (or very colored) and the bite usually comes on strong at first and last light. They can also be very fickle, so adjust your presentation size according to the conditions. (Big lures and bait pieces in high and colored water, an small lures and bait pieces in clear water).  They will be in all the major river systems starting now, with the Vedder being the first to get the big numbers coming in. I usually use either roe under a float or colorado spinners either cast and retrieved, or drifted slowly under a float depending on the water being fished. Good luck.

There was the odd chum in the spawning channel at the Stave, but none showing anywhere in any number, another week or so and should be in decent numbers.

I hit my favourite chum run on Friday. Tried my favourite chum colours, and not a sniff. If they're around they'll usually show themselves quickly.

Any specific bent rod jigs?

There is Bentrod video on Youtube specifically on this subject.

No specific jig, I like to try a variety of colors and weights

chum love purple and it can be really good when they are streaming in with the tide, avoid the stretches where they are set up on reds~

coho seem to like smaller jigs, drifted or twitched. Again its good to try several colors of mixes of colors.

Yes, nothing like a report of no fish showing to bring them out of the woodwork. Everybody wants to catch the first one. Trout fishing was good though, but so happy all the other rivers opened at the same time.

Was at ruskin dam 2 days ago, didn't see any chum surfacing. One month from now last year I couldn't keep them off the hook.

One month is a long time where salmon runs are concerned.

Water level is high and the current is strong...make sure you watch your steps as the rocks are slippery and the water is deep. It's still early and not allot of fish in the system.
