Shark catch in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
« on: November 15, 2004, 08:05:24 PM »

There's some scary stuff out there:

This Mako was hooked in the mouth, only fought slightly for 15 minutes, came up along side of the boat to have a look, long enough for one of the crew to put a rope around it tail. The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS. The boat was taking on water, the Shark would jump completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before the Shark actually drowned.

He weighed in at 1035 LBS

This Mako was hooked in the mouth...

lol... I just got home from work and this is the first thing that picked up by my tiring eyes... ;D

Anyways, big shark... but what an unfortunate kill. 15 years ago I would say "Wow, nice catch!" Today, I am thinking, "That's too bad..." :-\

Look at that picture at the top of this page and tell me if it does'nt make you think of a fair's ground. The PNE is now Open! What a spectacular creature and such a sad ending for such a huge beast. Truly sad.

I dont understand why they tie it to the boat? why not just cut the line and let the thing go... I mean, they where probably fishing cod, so what does one do with 1035 lbs of shark?

Asian market - Shark cartillage and Shark Fin Soup.  Don't know about the other 95% :(

Very sad indeed. Makos are magnificent creatures.

Big fish!

Questionable story though...you arent that close to the waterline in a 42 foot boat that I can think off at the moment to get a rope around a sharks tail even if it would be still.  (and at this moment, I have to say I wouldnt want to be anywhere near a waterline).

Unless using wire leader (which they might have) the
shark would have cut that any line pretty quick.  Anyone caught a dogfish? Their teeth arent much big but are murder on leader!

My guess there is more to the story, but one never knows.

But check out those teeth!  When El Nino is in, who knows what is swimming around off the West Coast of the island?  Im sure it isnt just the mackerel.

Saw a 7' shark once in Panama... Couldn't get out of that water fast enough!

Sharks a rarely THAT bad.

I bumped into a 13 foot Tiger Shark in Hawaii, when I taught diving down there. We literally bumped nose to nose. I turned and swam off, and so did he.

I have been in open water with makos, hammer heads, port beagles and blues. Blue to me were the most scary, because they tend to nip at you, just to see if you are tasty. If they get you bleeding, then everyone wants a go.

Also had a job feeding sharks for a bit - in the Med. There were two species there that I swear were dangerously smart. Bronze Whalers and Oceanic white tips. Even though you had a big bag of food, and a feeding pole..you alwasy kept an eye on those things...and they were the only sharks you ever really had to "armour" up your gear for. We would use flexible underground electrical condiut to put over our regulator houses because the Bronzies were particulalrily facinated with severing them.

Ahhh..the days of fun.

I would love to see a local salmon shark at work! Underwater that is. And preferably not working on my leg.

What is wrong with people???????
Why would you want to kill something like that...........
Some guy with a small johnson, wow look what I caught..........
I am guessing there is not alot of swimming around where it was caught, why not take a pic and let it go..............
Just goes to show you the mentality of people, if you are aloud to kill it they will. not all but too many will ........
