Tying snell hook pairs for mooching with herring
« on: October 01, 2010, 11:29:08 PM »

I wish to learn how to tie snell hooks as a pair (you kniow, 3-4 inches apart) to use with herring in the salt chuck.   Are there any links that show you how?

Some one showed me years ago, but I can't remember any more.

Thanks

There's a book called Mooching : The Salmon Fisherman's Bible by David Nuttall. In it he shows how to tie a "salmon mooching knot" using the whip finish. It's a little difficult to master from the illustrations. That's the knot I used for mooching and steelhead fishing.

Personally I always use the bait loop know, same as I would on the river fishing roe for my tandem anchovy/herring ties. Just tie the lower hook first. You can google "bait loop" to find it.
Googling snell knot gets you descriptions of another knot that you may be looking for.

Here is the Snell knot with a pretty decent animation showing how its tied.  I personally don't tie my mooching rigs exactly this way but pretty close.  Using this knot I would suggest tying the upper hook (closest to your weight) first, since its pretty much impossible the other way around.  After a couple of tries you'll find it really easy!  These types of tie ups can be used for tying up your own hoochies too.  If you get into doing that, try using a bait loop on the upper hook.  This will allow you to put a piece of herring strip inside of the hoochie to give you scent when trolling.

Thanks all!

I'll check out the mooching book at the library.

I found this link for the bait knot, only they call it a egg loop knot: http://www.wigglefin.com/knots/fishing_knots.html

And I managed to tie a few set ups using Shauno's link.

This book is by a local Guy and has some outstanding illustrations-available @ local shops.
