St Mary's Lake Report June 25th - 29th
« on: June 30, 2004, 12:27:44 PM »

Finally, I have a chance to let you know how it went. :)

LukeYVR, Chrome Mykiss, Nina, Zazia and I were at Lakeside Garden. The water level at the lake was a bit lower than usual, and the water was incredibly warm. Great for swimming, but a bit slower for the fishing.

We headed out on Friday evening and got into a few fish right away, but no biggies. Around 9pm, I finally hooked three nice sized fish right in front of the campsite but only managed to land one. 16 inches it was.

The fishing was on and off. Some spots were totally not producing while others were hot like fire crackers. Zazia hooked into her first ever bass on the floating dock at the resort and it took her by surprise. It was around 16 inches too.

My best day was Monday. During the afternoon outing, I made 8 casts in one spot and landed 6 fish! :o

A lot of small fish, between 8 and 10 inches. In total I landed around 120 fish. Three fish were 16 inches, one was 18 inches. The 18 incher had 6 yellow perch in its stomach! A whole bunch of fish were between 12 and 14 inches long, but still put up an excellent fight on light tackle.

The top water lures were amazing, thanks to Sam Salmon for the advice. I remember on Friday evening I threw a rapala out into the reeds and within seconds a huge bass came up and attacked it. Totally took me by surprise.

Fortunately the weather was fantastic throughout the whole weekend. We also did a bit of pier fishing in the ocean and caught a couple of perch, shiners, dogfish. You should see this huge dungerness crab that grabbed onto Luke's fishing line while he retrieved it in. You should also have seen Luke's face when the crab waved its claws around while letting go of the fishing line... ;D

Thanks Mark at Lakeside Garden for making sure everything was so perfect. Its no luxyrious hotel but to us it is a five star accomdoation. The atomsphere at the resort is great as it is a family oriented operation.

More photos and stories to come. :)
