Bait ban on the cap

Hi gang, with all the rain I am sure some people on the board here may be planning a trip to the Cap...just a reminder that the cap has a bait ban now (aug 1st-oct 31).

Thanks for the reminder Gooey. :) Actually, always wondered, does anyone know what the reason is behind the bait ban during this time span?

my impression was that it was to protect the springs?!?!?  

It really doesnt make any sense on a man made run were 95% of the returning fish are hatchery fish...as will be the next generation.   Close the springs to retention, leave the coho as accessible as possible (lift the bait ban)...thats what I would do if I were king for a day  ;)

river didnt budge an inch today but you never know when that whacky dam is going to open up and let a few hundred thousand gallons rip!  

we were thinking of the lower end...may just sleep in!

River is a trickle. Nothing happening. It will take several days of rain to have any real impact.

In regards to the summer bait bait, it is fact not related to the chinooks at all. The ban was put in place years ago to offer some protection for the summer run steelhead, as we all know how sucseptable they can be to bait.  With the summer runs in even worse shape now, I would not expect to see the bait ban lifted any time soon.

Got a not too bad (color wise) coho, about 3.5 lbs in the upper river today. Goes without saying that it was on hardware!

River is dead low but there was some color to it.

Lots of beacks fishing bait too.  They all stop tho when I politely reminded them that a bait ban was in effect!  One guy actually asked what a bait ban was (he was serious too, European ESL type).  I really think we need a more serious liscencing process similiar to the drivers licence.
