If thats what steelhead fishing is all about then I better work on my cardio. Correct me if Im wrong but I would have to say his gear was a bit light for a flow like that. Personally I would of had a beffier rod that I could put the brakes on that fish. But I don't know,I have never caught a salmon before. I am coming out to Chilliwack in october and hope to change that. I live in Ontario. That left side right side rod action when hes fighting the fish. I'm not familiar with that technique. Is there a reason for that? Anyhow a cool video and I would love to be in that lads shoes when he was fighting that one.

Little dragged out if you ask me...
And that left to right rod thing is just to hep move the fish around the way you want to.
Can also help get you out of a snag if a fish swims into it or to pull a fish out of somewhere you don't want it to be.

fouled hooked probably...after all that chasing they get it to the calm water and he still cant get it and it didnt look like it was doing a whole lot at the end. that guy didnt know when to put some pressure on that fish, he was too afraid to lose it.

my brother got into a 22lb wild buck 8 years ago on the vedder....the fight was as long as that and involved a fall from the old log jam below peach and a swim....and we landed it. around 40 inches and porked out.

You wouldnt happen to know anything about my stolen rod would you?

Agreed it must have been foul hooked, Iv seen a 18 pound wild buck landed on the vedder in a warm day in march and it was no more then 5 minutes before coming to hand.
Also landed a few 36 inchers while fishing through fast water, and cant say it took more then 5-10 minutes.

I cant believe how desperate these guys are to land that fish, Id like to here there storey. The buddy thinks he can tail that thing by wading waist deep into swift water....
got to love steelhead.

18 mins and lost a fish, time to heavy up your line and bring it in a little bit quicker. for the fishes sake.

That left side right side rod action when hes fighting the fish. I'm not familiar with that technique. Is there a reason for that?

I have been told that turning the rod on the side causes one of the gill plates to close tight making the fish "lose it's breath" faster.
This was for ocean caught fish but I'm sure the same principle applies to the river.

My guess would be that it was foul hooked, I hooked a 20+ pounder last year in a very fast moving section of the Vedder, and while it was a great battle it was still maybe four to five minutes total before I had it to hand.... this video does however show you how silly it sounds when people who post, talk about the twenty to thirty minute battles they have with fish, especially after seeing how long an 18-20 minute fight really takes.
cheers Rick

I think I'd not want to hear the story  , probably even longer than that annoyingly long video .

turning your rod on its side puts more pressure on the fish because it changes the angle on the rod to the meatier butt of your rod.  I was at a seminar from a G-Loomis rep a few years back and that's what they were saying.  There's also been several articles written in magazines about this very topic, (STS to name one).  One other benefit of changing your rod angle is that pressure is coming from different angles on the fish and it has a harder time resting.  For example, if someone was running around you trying to tip you over, you'd have to push back from all sides.  If they just stood on one side and pushed on you, you could just lean back on that one side and use fewer muscles to fight the resistance.

One more thing.  IMO, that fish was snagged.  And a word of advice; if you think you are in an area where you can't safely land the fish, don't fish there.  For example, why do people fish from the edge of a rock 20' over the water?

tight lines.

Ive seen the picture, its hard to tell how big it actually is because of the way he is crading it but it is very fat, but its not 28lbs..looks low 20s

silly video...all it demonstrates is the lengths and stupidity in which some people would go through for the sake of landing a fish...running on wet rocks...wading waist deep in fast water...hanging over tree limbs...what did it get them? ??? sweet fu@k all.

on top of that, the older rods (in the video) encouraged the younger guy to keep going... Sorry, not impressed. :P

that isn't the ultimate steelhead fight. I had the ultimate steelie fight today while using the fly rod the fish i hooked was huge and when i set the hook it decided it was time to re enter the fraser river from keith wilson.  but he changed his mind when he got 50 yards. it then decide to go to the hatchery but it didn't make it because mr fishy decided to wrap itself around a snag. we all know what happened next yes he is still wrapped around that log with a hook in its mouth. he is probably thinking i am a stupid fish. that fish almost had me going swimming for me fish cause i am hungry but mabye next time. i am sad know :'(

Fly fisher, I think "What" means, its not easy to read your posts with the run on sentence instead of using proper punctation and spell check.
i am not good with punctuation
