Refurbishing Reels
« on: November 23, 2004, 08:02:45 PM »

I was given some old vintage reels and rods that belonged to my co-worker's dad. I'd like to try and refurbish the reels during the offseason. The single action and fly reels shouldn't be much of  a problem, but can any of  you knowledgable folks recommend a way to tackle the grease in the internal gears of the spinning reels. What kind of degreasing agent could I use without harming the paint finish and what kind of cleaning "tools" to use.

Thanks,
Dubya

wd40 is a good degreaser but not to be used as a lube as it evaporates fast.

Ya I have an ultra sonic cleaning tank, its in the powder room downstairs  ;)

When I clean my reels usually WD40, a rag and cue tips is all I need.

I prefer using simple green for de-greasing. Disel workes too but it might work a little too well and it's not exactly good for the enivronment.

So when can I book an appointment to visit your powder room Gooey?LOL
Short of that, I think I'll have to resort to the more conventional methods.

Thanks Guys.
