Hey RP3, love the shots, how big were those trout?
P.S. I love the new book (got it at the outdoors show) I have read it cover to cover twice.
My biggest at this lake was 8.5 lbs, the ones in the pic were around the 5-6lb mark.
Here are few more from the same lake today.

This one was around 4.5 lbs.
And thanks, I am glad you enjoyed the book.

Biffchan,
Is that the Red Deer River?
Nice gold eye.
Also is that a walleye or a sauger.
I have caught goldeye before...actually quite fun on the fly. Basically just like trout fishing but more fight and power due to there flat shape.
Cool shots!
-
They're goldeye and walleye caught out of the North Saskatchewan River.
They're fun fish to catch on the fly but they're fight really does leave a little to be desired.

Hint: Mexico

Yeah, I wasn't 100% positive. Harder with just half of the fish showing.
My other guess was a spanish mackerel.
Edit: Serra spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus brasiliensis) to be more specific

Yes sir!

Wow I didn't know stripped surf perch got that large locally. I thought the large ones have been wiped out. Those use to be my favorite fish to catchwhen i was a kid. i use to go snorkeling with a small hook and line. I would bait it with baby crabs and swim near the pylons... It was great fun

Thats a silly question. Everyone knows that Asians eat everything they catch :o
Just like these guys....

This Asian doesn't eat everything, he even let this hatchery cutthroat trout live today. ;D
(http://www.fishingwithrod.com/albums/photoblog/090824_1.jpg)
-
Can't really see it too clearly in that photo, the absence of the adipose fin.
-
Looks more like a rainbow to me by the mouth, and lack of spots going into the belly. I could be wrong though.
-
Definitely a cutthroat trout based on the orange slash under the jaw. I even slashed the throat a bit to let some blood out to show that it was a cutt. ;D
The only rainbow trout that I have seen down in the Fraser estuary are juvenile steelhead that are about to undergo smoltification. Actually, this is the time of the year when they are quite abundant down here.
-
I think it depends on where they live most of their lives. Most of the cutties I have caught in or around the ocean have been greenish silver, but in darker waters they tend to be quite dark I agree.

-
here's one from my last outing
(http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee209/droussanidis/capilano8152009002.jpg)
-
Coastal cutthroat trout usually begin to emerge in the Tidal Fraser River around mid August and their abundance increases in October when fall salmon move into the river. These fish are usually as silver as the one shown in my previous post. I would like to suggest that these fish are moving in from the ocean, but there are no sampling done on this to provide a definite answer. Like many other species, the colouration is affected by the quality of the stream discharge and substrate.

You guys still think its a pink?
-
It's a pink lucky. Scale size is tiny, springs are much larger. This is almost always the easiest way to tell them apart, other than head shape once you get used to seeing a few of each.
The tail is forked, spring tails are square...(should be a dead giveaway)
The caudal penducle (where the tail joins the body) is very tapered and thin.
Pinks have little teeth like that sometimes.
Lower jaw is typical of pink, longish...
It is a very typical pink salmon(except for the teeth:) ) Congrats on the catch :)
-
Nice pink... I saw one caught today in another river.
Beauty little fish.
Actually its a red chinook jack about 14 inches caught on roe while bar fishing the lower Fraser. I'm sure it happens but in my 10 or so years bar fishing the lower Fraser Ive never seen a pink hooked on roe, also I have never seen a jack pink before.
If anyone else thinks that its a pink have a look at this photo, pink salmon do not have teeth on their tongues.

time for me to cook up a serving of crow for myself :)
I've caught toothy pinks, but never with teeth on the tongue like that. If you didn't show that tongue pic I'd still swear on it being a pink and be none the wiser. Nice little jack and sry for doubting you!

Just goes to show that pics never do the fish justice.

Jack from this morning, when the bite was off the gobs of roe were no longer working their magic, I threw on a white and orange egg sucking leach jig. Buddy was telling me a story and out of the corner of my eye, I realize that my float is nowhere to be seen....fish on! Another buddy laughs and says "was wondering how long it was gonna take for you to set that hook, I was about to do it for you!"

Mr. P beauty fish.... I've seen a few in that system around that size. Last year I got and absolute bullet in the 12 pnd range in mid september.
Doing a little scouting over here (just moved to the island).
A school of pinkies
(http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq336/EveryDay_fishing/Island%20Fishing/P9060005.jpg)
Having a little fun watching them trying to run from seals
(http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq336/EveryDay_fishing/Island%20Fishing/P9060010.jpg)
And another one to show numbers
(http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq336/EveryDay_fishing/Island%20Fishing/P9060014.jpg)
Yes you can fish there.... I was having a hard time not snagging them, would constantly be getting bumps every single cast. Had to actually wait for the takers to slam it and set the hook on themselves so that I wasn't reefing them in by the backs. I was pretty much the only one there using a single (barbless which is mandatory) hook. Most people were taking home fouled fish.. was hoping to escape some of that once I got down here. I went 0-3, in regards to fair hooked fish that I had in close.
-
Some Chinook I recently bumped into. These fish are over 1200km from salt water! :o

Wow Every Day,
Those pics are Unreal! I'm still staring at them!
Where Exactly is this?
They are from the island at a nearby river mouth...
Here is one fish from tonight. Manage to hook 7 fish (5 on fly, 2 on jig).
Had a seal take one right out of my hand, dropped the fish and watched the seal devour it 2 feet away. Lost my only working fly :'(

These fish are soo much fun beach fishing, this one actually jumped right OVER me today once I got it in close.
Can't ever recall pinks jumping 2-3 feet out of the water during a fight. Anyways fishing was slow today, only 1 landed, but met a guy off Deadliest Catch ;D

Came home for one day of fishing (after hearing how great it was).
Was a great time, dissapointed because I didnt get a coho but still fun.
Landed over 50 pinks, a sockeye, and lost one jack spring and another spring ~25 pounds.

FA, Coho are so tight lipped sometimes, even dead ones ;)
coho crazy, That's a wild one :'(
Drunker, Unfortunately I lost that fly shortly after I released that bulltrout ::) All of my intruder type flies are usually one-offs. I do have a picture of a similar fly here http://www.fishingwithrod.com/albums/Feathered-Lures/OrangenPink.jpg Just substitute the pink ostrich with orange ostrich. Use red polar bear instead of orange polar bear and maroon rhea instead of orange rhea.
Thanks hookmeup! Cya on the water...
Thanks Hook, and to answer your question, that's a Lamson Guru 4.0 reel. A great reel for the money.

nice shots and beauty fish sterling! I cant seem to be sure on what it is. I want to say coho from the body shape but it does look a little like a teelhead too. Is it a coho?
-
Thanks for the kind words guys. 8)
Yes rhino, it is in fact a coho.
I wish I had of taken the time to get a tail shot of this guy. It was simply HUGE for a fish of its size.

Funny you should mention that hue nut...
This fish :
Wrapped itslef 8 times around its head/body in my leader (you can see where one wrap went across the eye).
My lead was almost 10 feet long and the fish cam in almost at my fly line.
Was a bugger to get off too since it was through its maxillary's etc.
-
Was out at first light today, targeting a few ho's in a pool with literally no drift. I watched this doe creep up to my toonie sized chunk of roe, sniff it out, and slurp it in, all without my float moving! it turns to swim away and the float goes down so I set the hook and land a nice little bullet. ;D

Not sure if I would consider it foul hooked or more that is where the hook wound up after the strike....Find that it happens alot with intruder/trailor hook flies.
Here is another

-
yea i know im just joking round ;D, probobly went for it but missed the hook n got it in the outerlip. If you caught a fish like that and wanted to keep it would you be aloud or would they call it a foul hook???
-
nice pic's dereke
-
nice Bren! still slaying them ;)
-
Bren you beek!!!
-
BlackBlue - the reason you get a bunch of outer hookings with trailer hooks is because the fish hit the fly from the side usually so the hook is hanging on the outside of their face, this is also part of the reason you dont get solid hookups sometimes because they dont actually have your hook they are holding the fly ;) I think this rings true alot with Bull trout because they are very aggressive and voracious predators that will eat anything in their paths ;D steelhead of course like to follow the dang fly into shore alot of times deciding whether to strike or not until you take that first strip then WHAM !! they go for it, this is why they get the hook most of the time because they are coming up behind the fly.
just my theory ;)
Awesome fish Dereke ;D

**** ALERT **** New species of salmon caught on the Vedder. Hooked this monster up on the vedder last weekend while doing some scouting with a buddy.
It didn't fight really well, it kinda just dogged it, but woooweee it sure was a heavy beast. I figured the meat would be a little tough so I gently let it go.
I dunno what do you think should I of BONKED it??!!

lol, Thats a tad on the dark side I probably would have sent it back into the drink. You know its bad when the seaguls wont even eat the eyes. ;D What about a "fishgusting section 2009" ?

What did your hands smell like after picking that one up? ;D
Frozen solid so no smell. We eased back in the water and whaddaya know it floated away. LOL

I get lots of bulls hooked like this when I use stinger hooks....they take the fly from the rear 3/4 and the hook ends up on the outside. You can be assured those fish are not flossed....I've seen them charge through a foot of water to nail a fly and still get hooked like that.
-

The fish definitely struck the fly, but they miss the actual hook. It would be against the law to keep fish hooked like that, but you can't keep bulls from coastal rivers anyways.

LOL I would laugh so hard seeing one of those donkeys with a 15 foot leader where I got this guy. Standing on the beach like a fence post not moving, it would be long cold days with no fish :D :D........

HAHA Usually I will change it up but three days in a row they were smashing it so if it works I can't complain......That fly in your avatar looks like it would destroy bulls.

That's a unweighted McLeod stickleback- barely fish it, but hit something big on Alta last spring. Something = decent cutty. Might give it a shot sometime in a slow shallow run... I know just which one too.
Best pattern for bulls for me has been a cone-head beige string leach, but its murder to cast on a single hander. I've been toying with switching the rabbit strip out for marabou and using intruder-style hackle to build bulk. This year, I'm gonna try moving away from more exact imitations, and towards more impressionistic or reaction-triggering flies. We'll see how that goes.

NEWS FLASH
Thought I would let everyone know that I have found a sponsor for this thread. I will select what I believe are the 10 best pictures from this year (from this thread) and create a poll in which members can vote for their favorite. The one with the most votes will win a $100 Gift Certificate to Sea-Run Fly and Tackle (http://www.sea-run.com/). So hurry and get those pictures from this year in. I will likely be sorting through the thread and finding the good ones over the next week, but will make changes to my top 10 if anything after Christmas is posted.

Prize amounts

What ever happened to the "fishy shot" contest? Wasn't there prizes given away with that?
I kinda like the idea of voting for photos that members have submitted opposed to voting for Photos that one member has deemed acceptable for the contest.

TBA = To be Announced

I kinda like the idea of voting for photos that members have submitted opposed to voting for Photos that one member has deemed acceptable for the contest.
Not sure what's going on with the fishy shot contest. It was sponsored by DNE, but it was only open to subscribers. This contest is open to all members. The problem with voting on this thread is the vast amount of pictures submitted (29 pages so far). I'm not trying to pick favourites based on person, but rather on the quality of the photo, the handling of the fish, and the pictures ability to capture the beauty of the fish and essence of fishing.
If you have an idea on another way to filter through all the photos that would be less biased send me a PM or email, and if it works for fwr and the sponsors we'll go with that.
-
I halted the Fishy Shot contest for subscribers because I wasn't getting many, or any, submissions. I'll get it going again next year, depending on how much interest there is.
We'll choose ten photos from this thread for readers to vote once submission ends the end of this year.

I think summer fish that have been in the river for awhile can look reasonably bright after they have gorged on loose salmon eggs, especially after a high water. This early, Stamp winter runs almost glow they're so bright. Just a a thought.
It's neat that you can catch winter and summer fish in the same day...wish I was there. :D

I don't catch many fish and I have seen the pics of me with fish already.

Gotta remember when looking at fish pics, that the pics seldom catch the shine exactly right. Also, if a fish is dead, the colours come out. These pinks were chrome when they came out of the Fraser and this rainbow was really clean too. Bonked them and here's the pics:
