Victoria Breakwater Nov 26th
« on: November 27, 2005, 07:28:51 PM »

Had a buddy from the summer come to visit this week end, decided to take her fishing, she hasn't hit a fish since september, and was feeling a little deprived... :P

Neither of us have a car, or a boat in Victoria, so the breakwater was the only other option. Got there pretty late, managed to get about 1-2 hours fishing in before it got too dark to fish. I was able to coax one small copper rockfish from the bottom, and released it, will post the trophy shot when I have it. Nice evening to be out, saw some divers put in and could see lights under water near where we were fishing, pretty cool to see.

Second trip this week, was able to land a nice sized perch last week in a similar location last week end, no pictures of the hog  8) ;D

I'm cheap and didn't feel like paying for bait, stopped by a safeway on the way and asked for any off-cuts they happened to have, the guy gave me the remnants of a salmon carcass, I cut off thin strips of salmon skin for bait, oily as hell  :o

And that's it from the Island for me this week. Still liking life out on the Island.

You can also get free tubeworms from underneath the docks at Fisherman's Wharf! We used to hook them up to catch tomcod and perch at the breakwater

That would be much appreciated Marmot, any and all info is great to have.

I've seen people using the tube worms, but I never figured out where they got them from, so I may give them a try for another cheap alternative.

Gosh, I used to fish tube worms off the local docks as a kid. Excellent bait.

Best lure bar none for rockfish is a dark jig purple/green/blue cast out then give it tiny jerks so it flutters then drop to bottom and repeat only reeling a bit eachtime. Where i used to fish you would get one everycast.  Lingcod/salmon i have had the best bet useing buzzboms size 3 casting 5 jigging. i heard of nice chinook being caught off the end.

well good luck using buzzbombs out there....there is so much kelp floating around you'll lose a crapload in any of the good spots....any jigs for that matter...I texas rig mine so they dont get snagged up as often.

OH and spud i forgot to mention the tides...they are incredibly strong at that other spot i made mention of, so dont even bother going if its gonna be a fast moving tide.  Time it to the smaller shifts and just before/during high slack, otherwise its practically unfishable.
