We have hatchery pink, chum, coho, chinook, steelhead, trout, but why no sockeye?
-
There are hatchery sockeye. After the hells gate slide over 20 sockeye hatcherys were build to help rebuild the depleaded upper fraser stocks. They still do augment upper Pitt river sockeye with hatchery fish.
-
Do you know if one of those hatchery has website?

Dosent that mean that only hatch sockeye will be harvested making it even worse for the commercial guys?

Here's what I could dig up re: the hatchery http://www-heb.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/publications/when-where_salmon.htm#pitt (http://www-heb.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/publications/when-where_salmon.htm#pitt)
Floater, those sockeye hatcheries all ceased operation a long time ago.
-
They are using hatcheries for Sakinaw and Cultus right now.
The F/N I believe also have a couple.
The question is why do you want to know?
-
Wondring why there is hatchery cohos in certain river system to enhance coho population for harvest. Since sockeye is such a high priced fisherie why no hatchery is in place to enhance catch?
-
How would you propose people to target them...... :-\
-
Only keep clipped adpitose fin fish? ;D

What do you mean? You mean without flossing? Its quite simple actually. In the clearer systems like the Vedder and the Harrison they actually bite. I have seem them attack jigs, and roe.
-
You can also get them to bite on the fraser.........I am more than well aware of what works and what doesn't.

You can but its not easy. If it was easy you wouldnt see people flossing them. Some were caught on the bar rods this past season and I know of some being caught with other baits and lures. I have not caught any on the fraser myself but have firsthand information that they have been caught without flossing.

I agree with you biff, but you know by saying that,"sockeye bite on the fraser" people are going to think that we are nuts! ;D ;D

I got a nice sockeye on the fly in the Harrison a couple of years back. Here's the photo... :)

That fish really gave an incredible fight - what a blast!
-
So I take it you fish the west side of the river...?

actually, its not that uncommon. we've caught them here in richmond by jigging gibbs spoons just below the surface.
i've also caught them float fishing using spin and glo's in the upper fraser.
