I know an older gentleman who dropped his loop clw and cracked the spool, the estimated cost of a new spool was almost the same price he paid for the reel.

I have heard those stories as well. I have beat the living heck out of my reels and they have stood the test of time (well four years). According to a few people I have spoken with there may have been an issue with the reels when first released.

I agree with michaelt, although not a fan of the orvis rods, the bar stock is a great reel regardless of price.  I find their customer service quite good as well.
