Do Trout eat dead Salmon?
« on: December 02, 2004, 05:16:49 PM »

I was wondering if dead Salmon have any other use besides nutrients for the river. Do fish like Trout or whitefish feed on the bodies of dead Salmon? I've seen aquarium fish eat dead fish so I wonder if Trout would do the same thing? What do you think? ???

I know that some trout/char will eat salmon flesh, I've seen flies tied to look like rotting salmon flesh that are intended for trout/char.

Not sure about whitefish, but it wouldn't suprise me.

Not sure if you could bait a hook with salmon flesh and catch a fish, so I dunno.

Try eating a trout from the mouth of the Adams in october, I think you'll answer your own question, or be sick

They are called flesh flies.  Supposed to represent dead salmon flesh.  I think these are tied with rabbit hair strips.

It's illegal to fish with any part of a fin fish as bait in fresh water.
I just thought of something...would this outlaw roe?  Thechnically speaking roe is part of a fin fish.  This may also bring up the whole abortion type debate as well.  Is is really a fish before it's been born?  :o

Yes, the regs say "the use of fin fish (dead or alive) or parts of fin fish other than roe is prohibited throughout the province" (with a couple of exceptions - sturgeon and set lining in the north).

So roe is the only fin fish part that may be used.

Trout do gobble up all sorts of dead fish parts.  I took a rainbow some years back from the Thompson and as soon as I cut the belly open I could smell dead fish.  The belly had bones in it too.  It was horrible, it stunk the pan up when we cooked it even!
