Sorry, I shouyld have gone through and seen if there was a thread related to this.. but I just saw it on the way home going over the KW bridge... Is it not endagered sockeye return time now or very nearly??:smh:

what was this "heavy equipment" doing? Were they excavating gravel or something?

Seems late for gravel extraction but maybe not. Probably just someone preparing a Coho and Spring hole for his upcoming vacation. Saves a lot of time pre-scouting for honey holes. ;D
Was this an excavator or a brush trimmer?

Seen them dig well into late september so pretty sure it's normal when it isn't pink year. Shouldn't affect sockeye as they don't spawn in the canal.

an excavator..On the bar below Kw bridge digging a hole.. not a large excavator.... but not a small one either..and some other equipment and a big pile of sand

Being "Cultus lake" sockeye and sockeye always rearing in the headwaters of a lake.. makes sense..thanks :smh:

Your comparing Vedder pinks, of which they have built spawning grounds for, and endangered Cultus lake sockeye? Comon?

Well then I hope they really rip it up because that canal has seriously filled in and I sure miss the temporary structure and pools they used to dig into that stretch - serious blast for flies and spinners and spinners with flies. ::)

they are likely digging a settlement pond for late fall and winter floods.

Its part of the Vedder River Management program for flood protection although some people say its just for the money made by those wanting the gravel. Will leave it up to you to decide what the truth really is.
All the logging that went on in the Chilliwack River Valley watershed in the past and now does not help as the loss of the trees many say that the root system of these trees held back the water ands helped prevent the floods we have experience in the last few years. We are due for another high water event soon that rips open the numerous clay slides causing negative affect on habitat and fishing opportunities.
The Chilliwack River Action Committee, now disbanded did alot of work repairing these problem slides. Thanks to David Lamson, Dave from this forum and many others who did a lot of work for the river for many years. ;D ;D
