Title: Need a new reel.
Post by: SockeyeSlayer on August 24, 2006, 04:53:06 PM
Hey all, just wondering what reel I should pick up.  I mostly fish the fraser but I am going to be going for some coho in the vedder this year as well.  I really don't want to spend over $300.

Thanks  ;D

If you are looking for a reel that will be used specifically for coho in the Vedder River, a small baitcasting reel is sufficient enough. My recommendation would be either the Shimano Curado, or Daiwa Advantage, or ABU 5600c3 or c4. The line capacity is smaller than what you would use in the Fraser, lighter too. The Daiwa Advantage goes for around $130 at Reaction Fly and Tackle in Abbotsford (http://www.reactionbaits.com), The Shimano Curado is a bit more expensive, in the $200 range. The ABUs are around the $100 and $150 range.

400 series shimanos and 300 series diawas make good all around reels for the fraser and vedder.  The Daiwa Luna is a great reel for coho because it has a silky smooth drag and fast retrieve but it is $100 over your mark.  A Calcutta would do the trick as well.

I'd have to agree with the Daiwa Luna. It is an exceptional reel.

Everything I have heard on line about the luna has been great. I was even thinking about sneaking one past the girlfriend!!  But, I checked them out at Berry's today and saw a $492 price tag!! :o  What is up with this, from what I had heard they were $380-$400!! ??? ???

Weird, it was retail priced at Anglers West a while back for $389 - and that was before the " fire sale".

Ouch!! someone in BC is making a fortune for those reels.  If I were you, I'd order from Cabela's or go into Washington and pick one up for a fraction of the price.  I bought 2 of the 2006 abu garcia c4 6601's this year for 74.95 each.  That's half the price that I've seen in BC.

Are you looking for second hand?  My friend is heading back to singapore and with the exchange at 1.4 I am thinking of picking up a shimano conquest 400.  this will leave me with a 2nd hand calcutta 400 and a abu 6500 c3.  One of them will have to go.

It looks like the the local store's mark up on Luna are kind of high. You can get a Daiwa Luna 300 for $239.95 (US) at Cabela's.
