Fought with it for about 20 mins(my gear is set up for coho with a 8 lb leader), couldn't get it to shore. I also learned a valuable lesson about having waders, I need a pair...lol. At this time this fish had 2/3 of my line out, still somewhere out mid river. Got in a pool behind a big boulder where there was no chance of me pulling it out. I even tried to go down river but nah. As I was about to cut my line and my losses, I tried one more time and my "gear" was free.

side pressure for the big ol spings work when they are somewhat tired

A trick that sometimes works is to let off the drag on your reel, so your rod is straight. The current will then pull the float pulling downstream on the fish, and the fish will often simply swim back upstream towards you. Of course it may also spit the hook. But its pretty interesting when you look out and see your float slowly coming up the river when you have no pressure on the fish. Once it reaches you, you can apply pressure again. Worth a try if the fish has run a long way and you're not gonna be able to force him back.
River colored up in PM after the Pitt just below the crossing was opened to the river. Clear today.
Lickman road parking lot will be closed from the 10 Sept. to the 20 Sept. for the removal of more gravel.
What are u guys think will there be more fish this year, then last year?
There are supposed to be around 250,000 white springs returning this year - this is about 4 times the normal amount.
Black bear warning
Last night a friend and I were fishing in the canyon above Alison pool and were greeted by a sizable black bear looking for a dinner in the river. It was about 15 yards away from us when I noticed it. My buddy was cleaning his catch, we said screw it and left his 14lbs spring and took off down river towards alison pool and climbed the steep hilside and made it safe to the road and walked back to the truck. First time in ten years of fishing the Chilliwack river I have ever seen a bear there. Just a warning, be carefull guys :o
Anyone see much in the way of coho yet? Or is it mostly early springs? From what I gather not many although made my first trip out today and landed a chinook around 20 pounds, was in nice shape. The main problem will not be the lack of fish this season but the river conditions because of the clayslides, conditions good one day and out the next. It will be interesting to see how many are on the flow when because the visibility makes the river unfishable they are still out there. :o ::) :P
Down river from the Vedder Crossing Bridge, I can see several fishers working on both sides and quite a few fishers were below the cliff face. Looks like quite a vast open gravel area to fish at. I only remember years past that I accessed from the restaurant parking and walked below the bridge, sort of behind someone's backyard, and can't go any further 'cause the cliff and a deep hole. I was wondering is there any access to the lower run?Just park lower down the river and walk up.
Is the upper end of the Chilliwack still closed at the Limit Hole? I read an update to the regs stating they had closed a large section to ensure hatchery retention.
Anyone caught breaking into vehicles will be deal with, vigilanty style! ;) So with all the rain we're expecting tonight/tomorrow will the vedder be fishable tomorrow? How much does a day of rain affect the clarity?
When is a good time time to target chinook at the Vedder? Do they enter the river in such low water conditions? The water in the Chilliwack Vedder is seldom if ever too low for a fish to move through the system.
Next trip out I am going to lower the Maple Leaf Drennan a bit by adding a clincher weight so I will be a split second quicker on the strike.
Google, Fishing Clincher Weight, you should be able to find a better description that I can give. ;DNext trip out I am going to lower the Maple Leaf Drennan a bit by adding a clincher weight so I will be a split second quicker on the strike.
What it a clincher weight, Chris? ???

Oval shaped with a groove in midline, top and bottom end has a lead 'flap' which you can close up. This allows adding/removing the slider type weight in the same manner as splitshot.

When you put the clinchers on do one or two wraps before you close the flaps as they stay on a bit better and do not slide.
Chris
Wrong Technique.
Rain isnt the problem, theres plenty of water flowing for fish to move.
ChrisChanged technique today and success came easily , ;D ;D the only problem was, Rodney caught it on video. ;D ;D ;D That meant I had to buy him, Nina and Terry lunch at Cookies in an attempt to keep it off the net. ;D ;D
Wrong Technique.
Fished the upper portion last Sunday. Had a great afternoon, landed three in total and my son kept his first spring (25lber) so we were pretty happy. As we were cleaning it a nice sized black bear came on the opposite side of the river to check us out It was nice to be so close (30 yards or so), yet have a fast moving river between us! ;)
With a name like luvnlife you must enjoy life. You should be more bear aware because a "nice sized black bear" can very easily cross the chilliwack river and eat more than fish if it chooses.
I saw bear tracks in the sand just below Ranger 2 Saturdays ago. They were as wide as my out stretch hand. Maybe it was this bear? Most likely a Sasquatch. ;D ;D ;D
Well the rain of last night as had its effect on the Chilliwack Vedder, in the Lower anyway as in one word it is Mud, at this time.
Question from salmon rookie: is there any chance to catch salmon under current conditions? It is very tough and most fish that are taken in such conditions are not biting as they can not see your offering. No rain now so maybe it will be fishable by morning. :-\
Tomas
Gosh sometimes I have a tough time making them bite when we have perfect water conditions. ;D ;D Does wool have smell as a good number of people you see out there in these low visibility condition are using it? I also have found when you try fishing the Fraser with a large spinning glow with under a foot of visibility your success rate is very low.Question from salmon rookie: is there any chance to catch salmon under current conditions? It is very tough and most fish that are taken in such conditions are not biting as they can not see your offering. They're sense of smell is better than humans. I bet when we see 8" of vis, the fish see a lot more than that. So to say that they "didn't bite" is a little naive.
How are water clarity conditions this beautiful sunny Wednesday morning?Very nice, I will post about the trip under fishing reports later. ;D
http://kidsinthenest.com/RiverCam.htmlNo need for more river condition reports. ;D ;D ;D
fishing sucked today ;D

Holy crap! Where is that shooting from, Rod? Too cool. :D

I barely ever go to this area of the river, but it looks like its being shot from the selesse trailer park area.
It wasn't a suggestion that the updates are no longer needed when I provided the link to the new river cam. The river cam only provides satifactory river level condition, the colour is not good enough to see the water clarity, so daily updates from members are still needed. Was only kidding, conditions were good today so was the fishing but the bite was short lived. ;D ;D
I'm going tomorrow with my dad. He went for three days a couple of weeks ago with no luck. I think he has the gear and setup right but just hasn't had any hookups. Do they have any roe available at Fred's and what should I buy? I just flew in from Atlanta GA and tomorrow is my only day fishing so any help to get us started would be great! Also I read that the more you move the better, we plan on walking a lot but whats a good starting point along the river? If you plan on doing a bunch of walking, fish the upper river where you do not see to many cars. Youll get a bunch of river to yourself, and still find the fish.

Sometimes it can be a bit wet so after to get it mix it with some borax to dry it out overnight. PM me later tonight if you need and more help.
full moon tonight, should be good fishin tommorow
From what I saw when cleaning up the Diving Board beach this morning fishing was slow.
Thanks for all the reports on conditions. You certainly appreciate it when you live in Richmond, and don't want to waste one of your few days fishing on a blown river.I will try to check it before dark, maybe make a cast or two too. ;D
I'll give it a try tomorrow! :)
An updated river condition report would be appreciated if possible sometime by the end of the day. Thinking about driving out tomorrow morning but with the rain I'm not sure it'll be fishable. Long drive from town out there for me...Thanks kindly. :)Good shape this morning but like you say it will depend on how much rain we get tonight on how it wll be in the am tomorrow.
Looks like the conditions were good today, chris is still out there. Im guessing he landed 2 cohos today.Conditions were good today and had a great time fishing next to a forum member. He is supposed to file a report of his day later. No time for The Journal so will post a little here.
Well, I'll be there tomorrow at first light, Chris. You can always go to Cookies for breaky and wait for it to clear up. ;D ;D
It better hold up...or else! ;)
It was coloring up when I was there at dark but was hanging on which was surprising due to the heavy rain and wind we experienced for part of the day The rain has now stopped so we may be lucky and see a fishable day tomorrow but if it is not don't beat on me too much. ;D ;DI am a little concerned about the river conditions now as the temperature warmed up overnight and I see there was a jump in the gauge at Slesse, was there snow melt because of this and the strong melting warm winds? Its you call now, should you go back to bed or take the gamble? :-\ Just noticed the stars are shinning and it is 10 degrees.
Just got back from a look at the river after putting up elections signs early this morning. Visibility is about two feet in the lower reaches. Saw some fresh chum being hauled in. ::)
I made a few feeble casts and came home for a nap.

i think its time to bring out the flossing ducks eh chris ;DYes with the coho season over its the time. Made the first trip tonight, one shot, one mallard. Let the rains begin until the steelhead season starts in a few weeks. ;D ;D
Heard of any reports of steelheads showing Chris ?Not yet but I have not been out.
Was out on Monday.... saw 2 fish rise to the surface and an 4 ft long river otter ;DChum. ;D ;D
Thanks Chris..... I just got layed of for the rest of the month, so I will be getting out to the river a far amount lookin for some early steel. After only getting out for Steelhead once last year, I'm looking forward to it. I've been working on my gear and Roesacks all day.... ;DLook forward to seeing you out there again, it should be a good year. ;D

Laid off? well that will definately mean youll have to change back to Big Steel. ;DLet's not count our chickens before they hatch.... but I know the river pretty good right now and I have some really good bait so....I am at least hoping to match my total from the last 2 years... :-[ :D
May slip out in the afternoon if it does not rain too hard and colors up the water.I have everything ready for tomorrow.... you going to be out? ;DThanks Chris..... Didn't see you Chris..... I had to leave early anyways and get the EI thing started. The afternoon rain scared me off. ??? ::)
The water was in pretty good shape, just the kind of water I like to fish. Green and about 2-3 feet in the morning. Looked like it may have been clouding up a bit towards noon but still fishable. Found some real nice peices of water in teh mid and lower that I'll hit pretty much everytime out. Need to find a couple more though to get a circuit going... Thinking about heading back out on Thursday depending on the weather.... and conditions.
Thursday? I'll be fishing the lower peach road area to start with....Didn't see you Chris..... I had to leave early anyways and get the EI thing started. The afternoon rain scared me off. ??? ::)
