So there is a lot of talk on the news that they sockeye fishing is starting early this year. And there is going to be lots of fish unlike the last few years.
Does anyone know when they boats at Steveston will be selling salmon to the public from the dock? Or where I could find out from?
All this salmon talk is making me hungry for fish.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
-
i think you can buy some now at the steveston dock , i saw a lots of boats from new-westminster quay with drifting nets hovering by the bank of fraser river, also saw a fish jumping all over , that means sockeye is going to be available for BUY in local markets by now especially the steveston dock , good luck .
-
just go to Superstore they fresh and cheap price
-
Saw them at steveston a few days ago. $6-7 a lb right now. Caught out of Alberni.
-
Superstore has sockeye now at $4.99 a pound.
Do the ones in Steveston usually sold cleaned and heads removed?

thanks !!!

I appreciate all the replies.
I not into going to Superstore as I prefer to give my money to the local fisherman.
Its once a year I do this so even if its a little extra no biggy. Last few time I bought from the docks I had a good experience.
CW89 I would appreciate it if you would let us all know when salmon is available.

Make sure you bring a radiation detector with you. I am not joking either.

Yep bring the radioactive protection suits maaaaannn!!! Nothing like buying into the fear...
-
If you don't have a radiation suit, a tinfoil hat will do just fine. :)
-

Maybe I will bring one of my Radiation Survey Meters just so I can prove how silly this statement is.

Do you bring a radiation detector with you when you buy your steaks, chicken and vegetables ?

Edit - where do you even get a radiation detector and how much/effective is it??
-
Saw some big ole Sockeyes coming off the boats yesterday. Havent been down there yet to check on prices though.
-

You can buy a radiation survey meter from ALARA Consultants in Edmonton. If you want on body monitoring, you would need a dosimetry badge (or something similar) and you can get that from Mirion Technologies.

I herd that commercial will be opening today.
When they start selling at the dock and they announce it on the 6 oclock news Steveston will be a madhouse of traffic.
Not going to lie I cant wait to get my first sockeye on the BBQ.
-
They have been selling at the docks for the last 2 months now, it'll be a big rush for them this weekend for sure.
-
As most know, opening is from 3-6 today. I work every day this week, will let you know what I see.
-
Don't expect basement prices this go around. Another couple of openings perhaps
-
They mentioned on the news that the fish would be sold at any commercial dock up the Fraser. What would be the closest near Brentwood / Lougheed Mall.?
Just want to get the information prior to going out this month.
-
Just got a text from my buddy. He has my 10 sockeye for me all cleaned and on ice at $15/fish. Thats cleaned and right off the boat!! I dont need to drive anywhere LOL
-
I thought this was a sportfishing site not where can I bye fish site

lol spelling fail…
If snagging fish can be posted, then buying fish should also not be an issue.
-
I am hearing $15-$20 a fish, again, just what I'm hearing. I haven't been down the wharf yet.
-

9 posts and you want to tell me what I can and cant post. Get real.... BTW sockeye fishing is NOT sport fishing!!!

In the fraser river it isn't, it is in the salt though.

Of course its sporting in the salt, its also sporting in the Harrison where they bite and they are open.....

Why is it they bite in the Harrison but not in the Fraser? Is it water clarity?

They bite in the Vedder as well. So many people speculate as to why. From water clarity, to being in their home rivers, not being a biologist I have no clue but I have caught many on the fly in the Harrison mostly on chartreuse flies. I wish I had time to head to the Harrison to fish for them as they are a blast on a fly rod. Work and kids sports have me too busy.

Thanks for the info.

Any idea how much they are on the docks?

$15-$20 is what I was hearing at Steveston. Another poster said $10 from FN in Agassiz.
-
Thanks man.

I have herd several different dates thrown around as to when the open window will be for the commercial fisherman.
I herd Monday 18th, Tuesday but mostly sometime next week.
What has everyone else herd.

I heard it could have been last Friday, but now I am hearing Monday as well. With that being said you never know.
I am happy got my Socks early from a buddy.
-
Well no news this week on the opening.
Anyone else herd anything?
I know of some going to the Chilliwack river but that's about it.
-
They are out there right now. Closes at 7:00 tonight.
Was told not much change in the prices until the next opening (if there is one). By the 4th opening prices might go down to $10 per.

-
$3 lb whole
$4 lb dressed
Not at the main docks, main floating docks are usually jacked up by a few dollars per lb
They expect another opening before end of the month to get some of the late run.
-
Talked to a buddy who is on a boat. He figures next Monday or Tuesday will be the next opening.
-
I picked up some yesterday from a commercial fisherman.
Very nice fish and fresh. Worked out to be about $2 a pound.
Didnt even hear about yesterdays I thought it would be all over the news.
-
Was down in Steveston to take in the Dragon boat races. On the way back I went down to the Fisherman's Wharf to check out the sockeye prices. Most boats were selling sockeyes for $20.00 each or 3 for $50.00. One boat was offering sockeyes for $15.00 A lot of people looking but not buying.
-
Picked up a dozen for $15/fish. Had to haggle a bit.
-
Im waiting them out until I get them for $10.00 a piece.
-
Im waiting them out until I get them for $10.00 a piece.
Me too. Then I am going to buy 10 of them. ;D

-
would it be reasonable to expect prices to go down after the Monday/Tuesday commercial opening? I was thinking of checking out the docks on Tuesday and pick some fresh fish if the price is right. Also, does anybody know if there's gonna be another opening anticipated for the late run or it's all up in the air? Thank you :)
-
You might be better to wait until it's close to time for them to freeze the fish - within 3 days of when they were caught - then offer to take more than 2 for $15.
-
picked up 4 at $15 each today. market price was $25 a fish, with $20 per fish for more than one. just got him to throw in a smaller one for the fourth fish and he was open to it. I suspect with the large commercial opening there will be more wiggle room shortly.
-
my wife and her friends are putting in for 100 fish and we are getting them for $9 a fish not dressed
-
Only a few boats were selling sockeyes at the dock this afternoon. The fleet must be out fishing. Very few people buying. Guess they're waiting for the prices to drop.
-
Does anyone know if there's boats selling fish today? Going to be in the area might go check it out
-
No the last opening was C&R only.
-
http://www.btvancouver.ca/videos/3751594411001/
News from yesterday morning. Looks like they are catching them left and right.
Hopefully that means the prices should get better. ;D
-
Managed 3 for 40 pretty large and had sea lice on one of them
-
Nice 3/40 good deal.
I paid 14 per fish when i bought from a commercial fisherman.
I have to laugh at CList add that says " Fresh Sockeye just caught right off boat. Cleaned with head off $4.50 per lb. ".
Using a average of 7lbs a fish that double what it should be.
I am tempted to get more ... I just need room in the freezer lol.
Update from the meeting last night
Can someone please tell me where area D and E are?
The next Area D gillnet fishery is planned for Saturday, August 30. Details
will be announced in a separate fishery notice.
The next Area E gillnet is planned for Tuesday, September 2. Details will be
announced in a separate fishery notice.
-
SALMON AREA D GILL NET Areas 11 to 15 and 23 to 27. northern Georgia straight
SALMON AREA E GILL NET Areas 16 to 22, 28, 29 and 121 fraser river in and outside

Been reading these posts & info came in handy when talking to a man today.
Actually seen a car parked on a side road off of Railway Ave here in Richmond so I rode my bike over & offered the man & his family a Chinese tract. ( doing some fishing for The Lord ) he said "no" ( boo ...no problem rode many KMs & most did take one "cheer" )
He had a map book & he was trying to figure out how to get to Steveston Village as he wanted to buy salmon off the docks.
So gave him all the info & as he looked like a good " talker type " suggested if he were to buy 2-3 or more fish he should try to get them for $15 each.
He thought salmon sold by the lb but as far as I know it sells by the fish & not by weight.
Off he went.
-
This morning $5.00 per pound at the main dock. Only 2-3 ships are selling.
-
Save-On and Superstore have been selling fresh silver bright sockeye (look like Georgia Strait seine, no gill net marks), cleaned and head off, for $11-13/fish all long weekend. We've eaten 3 so far and they are fresh and tasty. They beat the coloured up gill-netted ones I saw at Steveston wharf last week for $15-20/fish.
-
StillAqua,
Which towns are you referring to for Save On and Superstore?
-
north Vancouver superstore sockeye on sale this week 3.88lb.
-
fyi......that's not a good deal. Say an average of 7 lbs...........that's a lot of money..........and not on sale.
-
I prefer smaller 3-5 pound sockeye , they are tasty ! I picked up 20 of them chromers (average 13$ a peice) from the grandview highway superstore on Saturday .
8.55$ a kilo is a deal ! Plus I got a friend who got me 10% off since he works there , and spend 250$ and get 25,000pc plus points (25$) deal is on too .
Yesterday night and today I went to north shore , marine drive SS , they had sockeye that were coloured up , which I would not eat .
Seems as though the late run summers colour up even when they hit the mouth of fraser
I've also noticed this in previous years
-
most sockeye head of cleaned are way under 7 lbs.

It's a great deal for quality sockeye......we ate 6 fresh this weekend just simply BBQ'd and I think the family could keep going.
-
They must be getting ready for another opening! lots of commies making their way up the fraser from Stevston.
-
Two questions
What does it mean when you say a fish is "colored up"
And two am I reading correct that there is another commercial opening tomorrow?

skin turning pink.still good for eating. another gillnet opening Thursday.

How long is the opening?

When I worked at the fish cannery during my university days, all the sockeyes from the Fraser were turning colour but the meat is still nice and firm and red.
-
Two questions
What does it mean when you say a fish is "colored up"
It just means it's been in or near freshwater for a while and has started to develop spawning colours, stopped feeding and is using up the fat stored in the flesh for energy. It's a leaner fish than a chromer. Personally, I've found the silver seine-caught sockeye are the best eating. Nothing wrong with a little colour, you're just getting closer to the best before date.
-
Wife bought 2 socks for $18 each. ( Steveston docks ) I walked about & bought a male sock hooked in the ocean just south of Bowen Island. Chap said the fish could be from a ft or to 400 ft down.
Will cook fish up Saturday (today) & looking forward to a tasty meal.
Ironically two pickup trucks were at the pay parking not far from the docks with those big plastic fish storage boxes. Hopefully the drivers were there to eat in the restaurant or have a few cool ones.
Hopefully they were not there with salmon on ice & brought down to restock the many fishing boats at the dock :o
When one checks out the many boats the buyer wants to buy a fish that was caught from that boat.
-
If you donot want to drive there and live in CHWK they are going from $8 to $12 here, $15 cleaned, this are ecomomic opportunity F/N fish so legal to buy. Far cheaper than going out after them ones self. ;D ;D
-
Just curious, how does it work buying sockeye off FN now?
Is it legal to buy a bunch from them and transport without a receipt??
Are there any regs around this?
-
It's new licenced "economic opportunity" first nations fishery, just for the duration of the large sockeye run. Cheam are one of the bands participating, selling fish on the roadside. I haven't bought any but a receipt sounds like a good idea. And make sure the fish have clear eyes and no smell so you know they are very fresh.
-
The problem with the economic opportunity openings mixed in with communal openings is that it's hard to know which fish are in fact legally being sold. IMO, all fish caught by FNs should be allowed to be sold if they wish, makes no difference if a certain quota is already allocated for harvesting. Personally I will not buy these fish from the road side in the Fraser Valley, because it's difficult to determine how the fish have been kept after they have been harvested. I like my fish fresh. Economic openings for FNs near the Fraser River mouth are done with actual commercial boats, so I feel more confident when buying from down there when available.
-
I did something I thought I would never do, no not snag a sockeye but I bought one for 10 dollars right out of the net today, I watched with the F/N and soon as the cork bounced on the net I said "there is my fish,"
out they went and quickly brought 3 ashore, I picked out the biggest, borrowed their knife and bled it and took it home for the person that wanted it.
I agree with Rod, they should be able to sell all their fish after given a certain number for the season. This would save the FOC officers a lot of grief and court time for those charged and most of the time no action is taken against those charged any way.
For $10 far cheaper than taking your own and if you do what I did, its fresher than those that are out TOWing.

Do something else you would never do, cheer on the Canucks :) You know you want to. Still waiting for the prices in Steveston to drop to $10

Ah, good times ahead, sockeye close and the Leafs win the cup. ;D ;D
-

One of those is going to happen in the near future!!! The other??? ;D ;D :D
Btw - go Hawks! (Seahawks that is...). LOL. OK - Back to the topic. Yes, if you're out in the Valley during a native economic opening, it might be worth checking out - if you know what to look for in a fresh fish. I was talking to some of my co-workers who bought fish from Steveston, and the line-ups sounded like Peg Leg! One co-worker said the commie didn't give him a chance to pick his fish.
-
i was there on Saturday and it wasn't that bad. lots of boats to buy your fish from. one boat was selling them for $15 a fish. didn't pick up any sockeye but did pick up a albacore tuna.
-
Might head down this weekend and see what kind of deal I can get for 10-12 fish.
Anyone know what the going rate is today?
-
Haven't been out bb'ing for fish in over 3 weeks. Contacted a Cheam first nation fellow and he delivered 16 fresh sockeye to my house for 200 bucks Labour Day weekend. All smoked up in my Bradley and sitting vaccuum sealed in my freezer waiting to be devoured. Along with the other sockeye that I caught myself I've been done for this year for the past ten days.
It didn't seem worth it to fight the quagmire of crowds, the long drives and the early, early mornings. So glad to be done.
Bring on the Vedder coho and lets do some Real fishing !!!! :)
