Understanding
Fraser Estuary!
July & August, Age 7 to 14
Did you know that there are over fifty species of native fish in
the Fraser River? Can you name ten of these fish? Fraser River mouth
is where the saltwater from the ocean meets the freshwater from
the mountains, making it extremely productive.
This summer, you can have a chance to learn and identify local
fish species such as sculpin, minnow, salmon and char. You will
also learn several basic fishing techniques that are commonly used
in these areas. By the end of the week, you'll be able to cast,
float fish, spinfish, tie your own rigs and of course catch fish!
You will have a chance to try out float fishing and catch some peamouth
chub. The possibility of encountering a large bull trout or northern
pikeminnow is also big, making it very exciting. A walk around the
park will demonstrate the process of tide and waves. Each class
will end with a discussion on potential environmental problems and
solutions.
