Seymour Salmonid Society annual general meeting
Posted on November 11th, 2009 by Rodney Hsu, webmaster

From the president of Seymour Salmonid Society, Dave Steele:

The Seymour Salmonid Society would like to invite all members and interested parties to attend this year’s Annual General Meeting.

In a year deemed challenging by most the Seymour Salmonid Society has once again stirred the pot of progressive study. Our ongoing commitment in the field of data collection has resulted in some very interesting findings, results which have caught the attention of fisheries biologists in both the Federal and Provincial camps. As a result of its continued participation in the Pacific Ocean Shelf Tagging (POST) program the Seymour Salmonid Society and its partners are developing a better understanding of smolt survival as it pertains to release site location. The information gathered might very well initiate a rethinking of how and where hatchery smolts are released into the wild.

In the year prior, the society successes were by no means limited to research. The 2009 pink salmon return has been quite something and I would venture to say that the numerically aggressive smolt release of April 2008 was a huge success. Pockets of a more than a hundred spawning adults have been observed at several locations well above the canyon. The arrival of these fish has resulted in an ecosystem upgrade that never would have evolved had it not been for the persistence of both Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the SSS.

Though the counts aren’t yet final it would seem that this year’s Seymour River Coho run has been fairly strong, most certainly a vast improvement over the 2008 return. The Coho handled by staff and volunteers have been of healthy size and the returning numbers would indicate a slight improvement in the marine environment. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that a trend of positive substance develops in the realm of Seymour River coho.

This year’s Annual General Meeting will be highlighted by Keynote speaker Matt Foy. Matt is a Senior Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and will address the subject of Adult Coho behavior as it pertains to smolt release timing. Within the context of said subject Mr. Foy will focus on the impact a later than normal smolt release might have on improving Georgia Strait coho populations and their associated fisheries. I expect Matt’s presentation will prove to be both interesting and informative.

The Society urges all members to participate in this years Annual General Meeting and welcomes all other parties interested in attending. Members in good standing will be asked to vote and participate in the election of our Board of Directors. Nominations to the board will be accepted during the meeting. Persons with an interest in serving on the Board who have questions in that regard are welcome to contact myself at 604 986-3239.

Time and date: 7:30pm on Tuesday November 24th, 2009

Location: Canlan Ice Sports, 2411 Mount Seymour Parkway North Vancouver, B.C.

We are asking those planning to attend if they could please RSVP.
